Development of Distributed Research Center for analysis of regional climatic and environmental changes
We present an approach and first results of a collaborative project being carried out by a joint team of researchers from the Institute of Monitoring of Climatic and Ecological Systems, Russia and Earth Systems Research Center UNH, USA. Its main objective is development of a hardware and software platform prototype of a Distributed Research Center (DRC) for monitoring and projecting of regional climatic and environmental changes in the Northern extratropical areas. The DRC should provide the specialists working in climate related sciences and decision-makers with accurate and detailed climatic characteristics for the selected area and reliable and affordable tools for their in-depth statistical analysis and studies of the effects of climate change. Within the framework of the project, new approaches to cloud processing and analysis of large geospatial datasets (big geospatial data) inherent to climate change studies are developed and deployed on technical platforms of both institutions. We discuss here the state of the art in this domain, describe web based information-computational systems developed by the partners, justify the methods chosen to reach the project goal, and briefly list the results obtained so far
Breaking new ground in mapping human settlements from space -The Global Urban Footprint-
Today 7.2 billion people inhabit the Earth and by 2050 this number will have
risen to around nine billion, of which about 70 percent will be living in
cities. Hence, it is essential to understand drivers, dynamics, and impacts of
the human settlements development. A key component in this context is the
availability of an up-to-date and spatially consistent map of the location and
distribution of human settlements. It is here that the Global Urban Footprint
(GUF) raster map can make a valuable contribution. The new global GUF binary
settlement mask shows a so far unprecedented spatial resolution of 0.4 arcsec
() that provides - for the first time - a complete picture of the
entirety of urban and rural settlements. The GUF has been derived by means of a
fully automated processing framework - the Urban Footprint Processor (UFP) -
that was used to analyze a global coverage of more than 180,000 TanDEM-X and
TerraSAR-X radar images with 3m ground resolution collected in 2011-2012.
Various quality assessment studies to determine the absolute GUF accuracy based
on ground truth data on the one hand and the relative accuracies compared to
established settlements maps on the other hand, clearly indicate the added
value of the new global GUF layer, in particular with respect to the
representation of rural settlement patterns. Generally, the GUF layer achieves
an overall absolute accuracy of about 85\%, with observed minima around 65\%
and maxima around 98 \%. The GUF will be provided open and free for any
scientific use in the full resolution and for any non-profit (but also
non-scientific) use in a generalized version of 2.8 arcsec ().
Therewith, the new GUF layer can be expected to break new ground with respect
to the analysis of global urbanization and peri-urbanization patterns,
population estimation or vulnerability assessment

Cultural heritage appraisal by visitors to global cities: the use of social media and urban analytics in urban buzz research
An attractive cultural heritage is an important magnet for visitors to many cities nowadays. The present paper aims to trace the constituents of the destination attractiveness of 40 global cities from the perspective of historical-cultural amenities, based on a merger of extensive systematic databases on these cities. The concept of cultural heritage buzz is introduced to highlight: (i) the importance of a varied collection of urban cultural amenities; (ii) the influence of urban cultural magnetism on foreign visitors, residents and artists; and (iii) the appreciation for a large set of local historical-cultural amenities by travelers collected from a systematic big data set (emerging from the global TripAdvisor platform). A multivariate and econometric analysis is undertaken to validate and test the quantitative picture of the above conceptual framework, with a view to assess the significance of historical-cultural assets and socio-cultural diversity in large urban agglomerations in the world as attraction factors for visitors. The results confirm our proposition on the significance of urban cultural heritage as a gravity factor for destination choices in international tourism in relation to a high appreciation for historical-cultural amenities.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Mapping of sensitivity to oil spills in the Lithuanian Baltic Sea coast.
This research develops an integrated environmental assessment tool for Lithuanian coastal area that takes due account of the major oil spill risks posed by the D-6 oil drilling platform, vessel traffic in the south-eastern Baltic Sea, and operation of the Butinge oil terminal. The goal of this paper is to present an environmental sensitivity index (ESI) mapping approach based on four specific indexes: coastal features (ESIC), socio-economic aspects (ESISE), biological (ESIB) and fishery resources (ESIF). The relevant methodology approach was selected. The core dataset is provided by GIS-based environmental atlas updated with other relevant GIS data of Lithuanian coastal resources. Four ESI maps were developed and an overall environmental sensitivity index (OESI) map produced. Results indicate that in the case of an oil spill, two areas need to be prioritized due to their biologic and socio-economic resources: the 25 km long shoreline between the settlements of Nida-Juodkrante on the Curonian Spit (CS) and the mainland coast (MC) between the settlements Palanga and Sventoji
