    AN ONTOLOGY-BASED COMPETENCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR IT COMPANIES

    The paper presents a generic framework of an intelligent information system for competence management based on ontologies for information technology companies. The advantage of using an ontology-based system is the possibility of the identification of new relations among concepts based on inferences starting from the existing knowledge. The inferences may be performed in our approach by a reasoning engine, using classifiers in the Descriptions Logics tab associated with the Protégé ontology environment. The user can choose to query instances of one type of concept, based on the relations that are displayed for him/her in a dropping menu. In addition to choosing relations modeled in the ontology, the user may also query inferred relations that are not explicitly stored in the knowledge base.     Ontology Population via NLP Techniques in Risk Management

    In this paper we propose an NLP-based method for Ontology Population from texts and apply it to semi automatic instantiate a Generic Knowledge Base (Generic Domain Ontology) in the risk management domain. The approach is semi-automatic and uses a domain expert intervention for validation. The proposed approach relies on a set of Instances Recognition Rules based on syntactic structures, and on the predicative power of verbs in the instantiation process. It is not domain dependent since it heavily relies on linguistic knowledge. A description of an experiment performed on a part of the ontology of the PRIMA project (supported by the European community) is given. A first validation of the method is done by populating this ontology with Chemical Fact Sheets from Environmental Protection Agency . The results of this experiment complete the paper and support the hypothesis that relying on the predicative power of verbs in the instantiation process improves the performance.Information Extraction, Instance Recognition Rules, Ontology Population, Risk Management, Semantic Analysis

    Evolution in the Ontology Based Knowledge Management Systems

    An ontology-based knowledge management system uses an ontology to represent explicit specification of a business domain and to serve as a backbone for providing and searching for knowledge sources. But, dynamically changing business environment implies changes in the conceptualisation of a business domain that are reflected on the underlying domain ontologies. Consequently, these changes have effects on the performance and validity of the KM system. In this paper we make an analysis of the problems induced by using not-evolved ontologies and present an approach for enabling consistency of the description of knowledge sources in an ontology-based KM system in the case of changes in the domain ontology. This approach is based on our research on ontology evolution and ontology-based annotation of documents. The proposed method is implemented in our semantic annotation framework so that efficient acquiring and maintaining of ontology-based metadata is supported

    Predicting Network Attacks Using Ontology-Driven Inference

    Graph knowledge models and ontologies are very powerful modeling and re asoning tools. We propose an effective approach to model network attacks and attack prediction which plays important roles in security management. The goals of this study are: First we model network attacks, their prerequisites and consequences using knowledge representation methods in order to provide description logic reasoning and inference over attack domain concepts. And secondly, we propose an ontology-based system which predicts potential attacks using inference and observing information which provided by sensory inputs. We generate our ontology and evaluate corresponding methods using CAPEC, CWE, and CVE hierarchical datasets. Results from experiments show significant capability improvements comparing to traditional hierarchical and relational models. Proposed method also reduces false alarms and improves intrusion detection effectiveness.Comment: 9 page

    An Ontology-centered Approach for Designing an Interactive Competence Management System for IT Companies

    The paper presents a generic framework for an intelligent information system of competence management based on ontologies for information technology companies. In a first step it will be applied in an information technology (IT) small enterprise and then its applicability will be verified for other organizations of the same type. The work presented in the paper is performed under the project "CONTO – Ontology-based Competencies Management in Information Technology" funded by the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research, involving two universities, a research institute and an IT private company. A competence management system (CMS), in our vision has to achieve three functions: (a) to support the complete and systematic acquisition of knowledge about the competence of the members of an enterprise; (b) to provide the knowledge about competences and their owners; (c) to apply the available knowledge to serve a purpose. The core of the competence management information system is an ontology that plays the role of the declarative knowledge repository containing the basic concepts (such as: company-job, competence, domain, group, person etc.) and their relationships with other concepts, instances and properties. The Protégé environment was used for the development of this ontology. The structure of the ontology is conceived so that description logics can be used to represent the concept definitions of the application domain in a structured and formally well-understood way. Knowledge acquisition is performed in our approach by enriching the ontology, according to the requirements of the IT company.     An Event-Ontology-Based Approach to Constructing Episodic Knowledge from Unstructured Text Documents

    Document summarization is an important function for knowledge management when a digital library of text documents grows. It allows documents to be presented in a concise manner for easy reading and understanding. Traditionally, document summarization adopts sentence-based mechanisms that identify and extract key sentences from long documents and assemble them together. Although that approach is useful in providing an abstract of documents, it cannot extract the relationship or sequence of a set of related events (also called episodes). This paper proposes an event-oriented ontology approach to constructing episodic knowledge to facilitate the understanding of documents. We also empirically evaluated the proposed approach by using instruments developed based on Bloom’s Taxonomy. The result reveals that the approach based on proposed event-oriented ontology outperformed the traditional text summarization approach in capturing conceptual and procedural knowledge, but the latter was still better in delivering factual knowledge
