An ontology-based semantic building post-occupancy evaluation framework and its application
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonCatering to sustainable development in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, many building performance evaluation (BPE) schemas have been developed to support building assessment and aim to narrow down the performance gap. Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE), viewed as a sub-process of BPE, is a systematic method to obtain feedback on building performance in use. However, building evaluation is a complex and knowledge-intensive process with scattered and fragmented knowledge, it is time-consuming and error-prone to acquire explicit knowledge.
Benefiting from the advantages of Semantic Web technology in knowledge conceptualization, ontology, as the core of the Semantic Web, has been widely taken as an effective method for knowledge management, information representation and extraction, and logical inference in the AEC industry, especially in the BPE field. However, most of the existing ontologies in the AEC industry are lightweight ontologies that mainly focus on building a structured system to represent the specific domain knowledge or information, without developing formal axioms and constraints to provide higher expressivity. Moreover, the research focus of ontology in building assessment is mainly on energy-related fields, and there is not a comprehensive POE ontology yet, especially with the focus on building occupant satisfaction, which is the starting point of this research.
This research develops an ontology-based post-occupancy evaluation framework dedicated to building performance assessment, with the ultimate aim of optimizing building operation and improving building occupants' use experience quality and well-being. In the developed framework, a heavyweight ontology is developed to structure the fragmented building performance assessment knowledge in the POE domain. In POE ontology, the building occupants' needs for building performance are generalized and classified, and the corresponded building performance assessment knowledge is formalized. In addition, a set of SWRL (Semantic Web Rule Language) rules and SQWRL (Semantic Query-Enhanced Web Rule Language) query rules are developed based on the benchmarking evaluation axioms to enable automatic rule-based reasoning and query in different identified application scenarios. This ontology model enables effective POE-related knowledge retrieving and sharing, and promotes its implementation in the POE domain. To validate the developed framework, a case study is carried out facilitated by the Building Use Studies (BUS) Methodology to illustrate its feasibility and effectiveness in different application scenarios. This research concludes that the proposed ontology-based POE framework has the capability to conduct a multi-objective and multi-criteria POE assessment at the building operation stage and provide a multi-criteria optimised solution
Knowledge formalization in experience feedback processes : an ontology-based approach
Because of the current trend of integration and interoperability of industrial systems, their size and complexity continue to grow making it more difficult to analyze, to understand and to solve the problems that happen in their organizations. Continuous improvement methodologies are powerful tools in order to understand and to solve problems, to control the effects of changes and finally to capitalize knowledge about changes and improvements. These tools involve suitably represent knowledge relating to the concerned system. Consequently, knowledge management (KM) is an increasingly important source of competitive advantage for organizations. Particularly, the capitalization and sharing of knowledge resulting from experience feedback are elements which play an essential role in the continuous improvement of industrial activities. In this paper, the contribution deals with semantic interoperability and relates to the structuring and the formalization of an experience feedback (EF) process aiming at transforming information or understanding gained by experience into explicit knowledge. The reuse of such knowledge has proved to have significant impact on achieving themissions of companies. However, the means of describing the knowledge objects of an experience generally remain informal. Based on an experience feedback process model and conceptual graphs, this paper takes domain ontology as a framework for the clarification of explicit knowledge and know-how, the aim of which is to get lessons learned descriptions that are significant, correct and applicable
Continuous Improvement Through Knowledge-Guided Analysis in Experience Feedback
Continuous improvement in industrial processes is increasingly a key element of competitiveness for industrial systems. The management of experience feedback in this framework is designed to build, analyze and facilitate the knowledge sharing among problem solving practitioners of an organization in order to improve processes and products achievement. During Problem Solving Processes, the intellectual investment of experts is often considerable and the opportunities for expert knowledge exploitation are numerous: decision making, problem solving under uncertainty, and expert configuration. In this paper, our contribution relates to the structuring of a cognitive experience feedback framework, which allows a flexible exploitation of expert knowledge during Problem Solving Processes and a reuse such collected experience. To that purpose, the proposed approach uses the general principles of root cause analysis for identifying the root causes of problems or events, the conceptual graphs formalism for the semantic conceptualization of the domain vocabulary and the Transferable Belief Model for the fusion of information from different sources. The underlying formal reasoning mechanisms (logic-based semantics) in conceptual graphs enable intelligent information retrieval for the effective exploitation of lessons learned from past projects. An example will illustrate the application of the proposed approach of experience feedback processes formalization in the transport industry sector

Epistemology and Ontology of the Quality. An Introduction to the Enactive Approach to Qualitative Ontology
The concept of quality points at a significant philosophical problem. The issue of the ontological status of the qualities of experience and reality leads us to discuss the issues of naturalism and reductionism in philosophy of mind. I argue that a transcendental version of the enactive approach is able to address these issues, thanks to its conception of the relation between subject and object as dependent co-origination. In this way, the enactive approach constitutes an alternative to both the internalism and the externalism about qualities, constituting a process-oriented and relationist framework that can be fruitfully applied to the analysis of different ontological domains. In the conclusive section, I distinguish between an ontological and a metaphysical interpretation of this view, stressing the advantages of the former
Introducing realist ontology for the representation of adverse events
The goal of the REMINE project is to build a high performance prediction, detection and monitoring platform for managing Risks against Patient Safety (RAPS). Part of the work involves developing in ontology enabling computer-assisted RAPS decision support on the basis of the disease history of a patient as documented in a hospital information system. A requirement of the ontology is to contain a representation for what is commonly referred to by the term 'adverse event', one challenge being that distinct authoritative sources define this term in different and context-dependent ways. The presence of some common ground in all definitions is, however, obvious. Using the analytical principles underlying Basic Formal Ontology and Referent Tracking, both developed in the tradition of philosophical realism, we propose a formal representation of this common ground which combines a reference ontology consisting exclusively of representations of universals and an application ontology which consists representations of defined classes. We argue that what in most cases is referred to by means of the term 'adverse event' - when used generically - is a defined class rather than a universal. In favour of the conception of adverse events as forming a defined class are the arguments that (1) there is no definition for 'adverse event' that carves out a collection of particulars which constitutes the extension of a universal, and (2) the majority of definitions require adverse events to be (variably) the result of some observation, assessment or (absence of) expectation, thereby giving these entities a nominal or epistemological flavour

What really matters? The elusive quality of the material in feminist thought
The concept of the 'material' was the focus of much feminist work in the 1970s. It has always been a deeply contested one, even for feminists working within a broadly materialist paradigm of the social. Materialist feminists stretched the concept of the material beyond the narrowly economic in their attempts to develop a social ontology of gender and sexuality. Nonetheless, the quality of the social asserted by an expanded sense of the material - its 'materiality' - remains ambiguous. New terminologies of materiality and materialization have been developed within post-structuralist feminist thought and the literature on embodiment. The quality of 'materiality' is no longer asserted - as in materialist feminisms - but is problematized through an implicit deferral of ontology in these more contemporary usages, forcing us to interrogate the limits of both materialist and post-structuralist forms of constructionism. What really matters is how these newer terminologies of 'materiality' and 'materialization' induce us to develop a fuller social ontology of gender and sexuality; one that weaves together social, cultural, experiential and embodied practices
Semantic-driven matchmaking of web services using case-based reasoning
With the rapid proliferation of Web services as the medium of choice to securely publish application services beyond the firewall, the importance of accurate, yet flexible matchmaking of similar services gains importance both for the human user and for dynamic composition engines. In this paper, we present a novel approach that utilizes the case based reasoning methodology for modelling dynamic Web service discovery and matchmaking. Our framework considers Web services execution experiences in the decision making process and is highly adaptable to the service requester constraints. The framework also utilises OWL semantic descriptions extensively for implementing both the components of the CBR engine and the matchmaking profile of the Web services
