CloudHealth: A Model-Driven Approach to Watch the Health of Cloud Services
Cloud systems are complex and large systems where services provided by
different operators must coexist and eventually cooperate. In such a complex
environment, controlling the health of both the whole environment and the
individual services is extremely important to timely and effectively react to
misbehaviours, unexpected events, and failures. Although there are solutions to
monitor cloud systems at different granularity levels, how to relate the many
KPIs that can be collected about the health of the system and how health
information can be properly reported to operators are open questions. This
paper reports the early results we achieved in the challenge of monitoring the
health of cloud systems. In particular we present CloudHealth, a model-based
health monitoring approach that can be used by operators to watch specific
quality attributes. The CloudHealth Monitoring Model describes how to
operationalize high level monitoring goals by dividing them into subgoals,
deriving metrics for the subgoals, and using probes to collect the metrics. We
use the CloudHealth Monitoring Model to control the probes that must be
deployed on the target system, the KPIs that are dynamically collected, and the
visualization of the data in dashboards.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 1 tabl
CYCLONE Unified Deployment and Management of Federated, Multi-Cloud Applications
Various Cloud layers have to work in concert in order to manage and deploy
complex multi-cloud applications, executing sophisticated workflows for Cloud
resource deployment, activation, adjustment, interaction, and monitoring. While
there are ample solutions for managing individual Cloud aspects (e.g. network
controllers, deployment tools, and application security software), there are no
well-integrated suites for managing an entire multi cloud environment with
multiple providers and deployment models. This paper presents the CYCLONE
architecture that integrates a number of existing solutions to create an open,
unified, holistic Cloud management platform for multi-cloud applications,
tailored to the needs of research organizations and SMEs. It discusses major
challenges in providing a network and security infrastructure for the
Intercloud and concludes with the demonstration how the architecture is
implemented in a real life bioinformatics use case
Microservices Validation: Methodology and Implementation
Due to the wide spread of cloud computing, arises actual question about architecture, design and implementation of cloud applications. The microservice model describes the design and development of loosely coupled cloud applications when computing resources are provided on the basis of automated IaaS and PaaS cloud platforms. Such applications consist of hundreds and thousands of service instances, so automated validation and testing of cloud applications developed on the basis of microservice model is a pressing issue. There are constantly developing new methods of testing both individual microservices and cloud applications at a whole. This article presents our vision of a framework for the validation of the microservice cloud applications, providing an integrated approach for the implementation of various testing methods of such applications, from basic unit tests to continuous stability testing
A Semantic-Based Approach to Attain Reproducibility of Computational Environments in Scientic Work ows: A Case Study
Reproducible research in scientic work ows is often addressed by tracking the provenance of the produced results. While this approach allows inspecting intermediate and nal results, improves understanding, and permits replaying a work ow execution, it does not ensure that the computational environment is available for subsequent executions to reproduce the experiment. In this work, we propose describing the resources involved in the execution of an experiment using a set of semantic vocabularies, so as to conserve the computational environment. We dene a process for documenting the work ow application, management system, and their dependencies based on 4 domain ontologies. We then conduct an experimental evaluation sing a real work ow application on an academic and a public Cloud platform. Results show that our approach can reproduce an equivalent execution environment of a predened virtual machine image on both computing platforms

Global integration of public sector information
This paper deals with technological methods for consolidating assets lists of available public sector information (PSI) for re-use. In this direction, the effort is to review the state of the art in delivering access to PSI throughout the world and to prioritize the necessary engagements for joining available PSI catalogues. We propose an architectural framework grounded on Semantic Web technologies to deliver a global platform for federated searching. A speculative survey of available PSI portals is presented, and the initial implementation, results, and analysis of the proposed architecture are covered in detail
A semantic-based approach to attain reproducibility of computational environments in scientific workflows: a case study
Reproducible research in scientific workflows is often addressed by tracking the provenance of the produced results. While this approach allows inspecting intermediate and final results, improves understanding, and permits replaying a workflow execution, it does not ensure that the computational environment is available for subsequent executions to reproduce the experiment. In this work, we propose describing the resources involved in the execution of an experiment using a set of semantic vocabularies, so as to conserve the computational environment. We define a process for documenting the workflow application, management system, and their dependencies based on 4 domain ontologies. We then conduct an experimental evaluation using a real workflow application on an academic and a public Cloud platform. Results show that our approach can reproduce an equivalent execution environment of a predefined virtual machine image on both computing platforms
Managing polyglot systems metadata with hypergraphs
A single type of data store can hardly fulfill every end-user requirements in the NoSQL world. Therefore, polyglot systems use different types of NoSQL datastores in combination. However, the heterogeneity of the data storage models makes managing the metadata a complex task in such systems, with only a handful of research carried out to address this. In this paper, we propose a hypergraph-based approach for representing the catalog of metadata in a polyglot system. Taking an existing common programming interface to NoSQL systems, we extend and formalize it as hypergraphs for managing metadata. Then, we define design constraints and query transformation rules for three representative data store types. Furthermore, we propose a simple query rewriting algorithm using the catalog itself for these data store types and provide a prototype implementation. Finally, we show the feasibility of our approach on a use case of an existing polyglot system.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
