    Microwave backscattering theory and active remote sensing of the ocean surface

    The status is reviewed of electromagnetic scattering theory relative to the interpretation of microwave remote sensing data acquired from spaceborne platforms over the ocean surface. Particular emphasis is given to the assumptions which are either implicit or explicit in the theory. The multiple scale scattering theory developed during this investigation is extended to non-Gaussian surface statistics. It is shown that the important statistic for the case is the probability density function of the small scale heights conditioned on the large scale slopes; this dependence may explain the anisotropic scattering measurements recently obtained with the AAFE Radscat. It is noted that present surface measurements are inadequate to verify or reject the existing scattering theories. Surface measurements are recommended for qualifying sensor data from radar altimeters and scatterometers. Additional scattering investigations are suggested for imaging type radars employing synthetically generated apertures

    Does the scatterometer see wind speed or friction velocity?

    Studies of radar backscatter from the sea surface are referred either to the wind speed, U, or friction velocity, u(sub *). Bragg scattering theory suggests that these variations in backscatter are directly related to the height of the capillary-gravity waves modulated by the larger waves in tilt and by straining of the short wave field. The question then arises as to what characteristic of the wind field is most probably correlated with the wave number spectrum of the capillary-gravity waves. The justification for selecting U as the appropriate meteorological parameter to be associated with backscatter from L-band to Ku-band are reviewed. Both theoretical reasons and experimental evidence are used to demonstrate that the dominant parameter is U/C(lambda) where U is the wind speed at a height of about lambda/2 for waves having a phase speed of C(lambda)

    An analysis of short pulse and dual frequency radar techniques for measuring ocean wave spectra from satellites

    Scanning beam microwave radars were used to measure ocean wave directional spectra from satellites. In principle, surface wave spectral resolution in wave number can be obtained using either short pulse (SP) or dual frequency (DF) techniques; in either case, directional resolution obtains naturally as a consequence of a Bragg-like wave front matching. A four frequency moment characterization of backscatter from the near vertical using physical optics in the high frequency limit was applied to an analysis of the SP and DF measurement techniques. The intrinsic electromagnetic modulation spectrum was to the first order in wave steepness proportional to the large wave directional slope spectrum. Harmonic distortion was small and was a minimum near 10 deg incidence. NonGaussian wave statistics can have an effect comparable to that in the second order of scattering from a normally distributed sea surface. The SP technique is superior to the DF technique in terms of measurement signal to noise ratio and contrast ratio

    International audienceDelay/Doppler altimetry aims at reducing the measurementnoise and increasing the along-track resolution in comparison with conventional pulse limited altimetry. In a previous paper, we have proposed a semi-analytical model for delay/Doppler altimetry which considers some simplifications as the absence of mispointing antenna. This paper first proposes a new semi-analytical model for delay/Doppler altimetry. The proposed analytical expression for the flat surface impulse response considers antenna mispointing angles, a circular antenna pattern, no vertical speed effect and a uniform scattering. The two dimensional delay/Doppler map is obtained by a numerical computation of the convolution between the proposed analytical function, the probability density function of the heights of the specular scatterers and the time/frequency point target response of the radar. The approximations used to obtain the semi-analytical model are analyzed and the associated errors are quantified by analytical bounds for these errors. The second contribution of this paper concerns the estimation of the parameters associated with the multi-look semi-analytical model. Two estimation strategies based on the least squares procedure are proposed. The proposed model and algorithms are validated on both synthetic and real waveforms. The obtained results are very promising and show the accuracy of this generalized model with respect to the previous model assuming zero antenna mispointing

    Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges

    With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected. Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services. Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs. Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications, conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage, and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and atmosphere conditions, are also discussed

    Measurements of Sea Surface Currents in the Baltic Sea Region Using Spaceborne Along-Track InSAR

    The main challenging problems in ocean current retrieval from along-track interferometric (ATI)-synthetic aperture radar (SAR) are phase calibration and wave bias removal. In this paper, a method based on differential InSAR (DInSAR) technique for correcting the phase offset and its variation is proposed. The wave bias removal is assessed using two different Doppler models and two different wind sources. In addition to the wind provided by an atmospheric model, the wind speed used for wave correction in this work is extracted from the calibrated SAR backscatter. This demonstrates that current retrieval from ATI-SAR can be completed independently of atmospheric models. The retrieved currents, from four TanDEM-X (TDX) acquisitions over the 6resund channel in the Baltic Sea, are compared to a regional ocean circulation model. It is shown that by applying the proposed phase correction and wave bias removal, a good agreement in spatial variation and current direction is achieved. The residual bias, between the ocean model and the current retrievals, varies between 0.013 and 0.3 m/s depending on the Doppler model and wind source used for wave correction. This paper shows that using SAR as a source of wind speed reduces the bias and root-mean-squared-error (RMSE) of the retrieved currents by 20% and 15%, respectively. Finally, the sensitivity of the sea current retrieval to Doppler model and wind errors are discussed

    Surface wave, internal wave, and source motion effects on matched field processing in a shallow water waveguide

    Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution August 1989Given well known environmental conditions, matched field processing has been shown to be a promising signal processing technique for the localization of acoustic sources. However, when environmental data are incomplete or inaccurate, a 'mismatch' occurs between the measured field and model field which can lead to a severe degradation of the localization estimator. We investigate the possible mismatch effects of surface and internal waves on matched field processing in a shallow water waveguide. We utilize a modified ray theory, based on the work of Tindle, to calculate the acoustic pressure field. This allows us to simply incorporate range dependent environmental conditions as well as to generalize our work to deeper waveguides. In general, the conventional (Bartlett) matched field beamformer does not provide sufficient resolution to unambiguously locate a source, even in a perfectly matched environment. The maximum likelihood method (MLM) matched field beamformer has much better resolution but is extremely susceptible to mismatch. The mismatch due to surface roughness can result in a large reduction of the estimator peak. Part, but not all, of the peak can be regained by 1)using a model which includes incomplete reflection at the surface based on actual sea surface statistics and 2) short time averaging of the measured signal, with times on the order of the period of the surface waves. Mismatch due to internal waves can also result in a large degradation of the estimator. Averaging over the same time period as surface waves provides little improvement and leads one to surmise that internal waves may be a limiting constraint on matched field processing. Finally, we combine the surface and internal wave fields with a slowly moving source. This example highlights the necessity for the development of a beamformer which has a broader mainlobe while maintaining adequate sidelobe suppression, and we address this issue by looking at two such beamformers

    Theoretical modeling of dual-frequency scatterometer response: improving ocean wind and rainfall effects

    Ocean surface wind is a key parameter of the Earth’s climate system. Occurring at the interface between the ocean and the atmosphere, ocean winds modulate fluxes of heat, moisture and gas exchanges. They reflect the lower branch of the atmospheric circulation and represent a major driver of the ocean circulation. Studying the long-term trends and variability of the ocean surface winds is of key importance in our effort to understand the Earth’s climate system and the causes of its changes. More than three decades of surface wind data are available from spaceborne scatterometer/radiometer missions and there is an ongoing effort to inter-calibrate all these measurements with the aim of building a complete and continuous picture of the ocean wind variability. Currently, spaceborne scatterometer wind retrievals are obtained by inversion algorithms of empirical Geophysical Model Functions (GMFs), which represent the relationship between ocean surface backscattering coefficient and the wind parameters. However, by being measurement-dependent, the GMFs are sensor-specific and, in addition, they may be not properly defined in all weather conditions. This may reduce the accuracy of the wind retrievals in presence of rain and it may also lead to inconsistencies amongst winds retrieved by different sensors. Theoretical models of ocean backscatter have the big potential of providing a more general and understandable relation between the measured microwave backscatter and the surface wind field than empirical models. Therefore, the goal of our research is to understand and address the limitations of the theoretical modeling, in order to propose a new strategy towards the definition of a unified theoretical model able to account for the effects of both wind and rain. In this work, it is described our approach to improve the theoretical modeling of the ocean response, starting from the Ku-band (13.4 GHz) frequency and then broadening the analysis at C-band (5.3 GHz) frequency. This research has revealed the need for new understanding of the frequency-dependent modeling of the surface backscatter in response to the wind-forced surface wave spectrum. Moreover, our ocean wave spectrum modification introduced to include the influences of the surface rain, allows the interpretation/investigation of the scatterometer observations in terms not only of the surface winds but also of the surface rain, defining an additional step needed to improve the wind retrievals algorithms as well as the possibility to jointly estimate wind and rain from scatterometer observations
