    For corporate memory and enterprise ontology systems to be maximally useful, they must be freed from certain barriers placed around them by traditional knowledge management paradigms. This means, above all, that they must mirror more faithfully those portions of reality which are salient to the workings of the enterprise, including the changes that occur with the passage of time. The purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate how theories based on philosophical realism can contribute to this objective. We discuss how realism-based ontologies (capturing what is generic) combined with referent tracking (capturing what is specific) can play a key role in building the robust and useful corporate memories of the future

    Meta data types for providing business rules are described. These business rules form part of the knowledge base of an organisation. The integration of knowledge with data and information is discussed. FORM, a natural language based, conceptual modelling technique is used to describe the meta data types. XML has been recognised by many in the industry as the preferred data interchange language. XML is currently being used to interchange data and its schema. The use of XML to interchange rules is being investigated, in this paper. This will enable organisations to interchange business rules and their meta data, in addition to data and their schema. Such business rules can be interpreted and applied by the receiving systems, thus providing a basis for intelligent behavior when dealing with information being interchange

    Workflows on Android: A Framework Supporting Business Process Execution and Rule-Based Analysis

    In companies, Business Process Management is often supported by Process-aware information systems (PAIS). However, such systems are mostly restricted to stationary desktop computers. To overcome this restriction, smart mobile devices may be used for mobile business process execution. However, with traditional PAIS having a client-server architecture, the computation is done on server side, whereas the client only visualizes business process tasks and interacts with the user. Therefore, smart mobile devices must rely on their mobile connection to provide PAIS features to its users. A possible solution is the transfer of server side features to the smart mobile device itself, enabling the latter to instantiate business process models and analyze business process instances by itself, without the need of a direct connection to a workflow-server. This thesis presents Workflows on Android (WOtAN), a modular and flexible framework for business process management running on Android smart mobile devices. However, the thesis focuses on flexible and robust business process execution as well as the analysis of business process instances. For this, predefined evaluation rules are applied on data that was collected during business process instance execution. Different concepts and interesting implementation aspects are presented in this thesis. Further, an application scenario is shown, where WOtAN is used to properly support a mobile data collection application

    Collaborative workflow management systems in logistic companies require strong information systems and computer network support. These IT integration requirements have expanded considerably with the advent of e-business; utilizing web services and Partner to Partner ecommerce. This paper deals with change management of collaborative workflow in such consortia and proposes architecture for synchronization and monitoring of these services where existing workflow systems are adapted to the changes requested by management. This paper describes conceptual framework of the services monitor which is used to monitor and edit changes resulting in new collaborative workflows

It shows the design and the implementation of a rights expression exchange framework. The framework allows DRM systems to exchange electronic contracts, formulated in a standardized rights expression language, and thus provides DRM system interoperability. The work introduces a methodology for the standardized composition, exchange and processing of electronic contracts or rights expressions
