    Secure Identification in Social Wireless Networks

    The applications based on social networking have brought revolution towards social life and are continuously gaining popularity among the Internet users. Due to the advanced computational resources offered by the innovative hardware and nominal subscriber charges of network operators, most of the online social networks are transforming into the mobile domain by offering exciting applications and games exclusively designed for users on the go. Moreover, the mobile devices are considered more personal as compared to their desktop rivals, so there is a tendency among the mobile users to store sensitive data like contacts, passwords, bank account details, updated calendar entries with key dates and personal notes on their devices. The Project Social Wireless Network Secure Identification (SWIN) is carried out at Swedish Institute of Computer Science (SICS) to explore the practicality of providing the secure mobile social networking portal with advanced security features to tackle potential security threats by extending the existing methods with more innovative security technologies. In addition to the extensive background study and the determination of marketable use-cases with their corresponding security requirements, this thesis proposes a secure identification design to satisfy the security dimensions for both online and offline peers. We have implemented an initial prototype using PHP Socket and OpenSSL library to simulate the secure identification procedure based on the proposed design. The design is in compliance with 3GPP‟s Generic Authentication Architecture (GAA) and our implementation has demonstrated the flexibility of the solution to be applied independently for the applications requiring secure identification.     OpenID with certificate-based user authentication on smartcard

Looking from a vantage point, federated identity management gives the opportunity to users of one IT system to access data and sources of another IT system seamlessly and securely without handling a complete user administration. Single signon mechanisms manage user authentication process of these systems prompting log in once and assure access control across those multiple independent systems. OpenID is a widely used federated identity/single sign-on scheme generally implemented with username-password authentication. In this work, we augment the user authentication phase of OpenID with certi cate-based authentication using smartcard technology.     Elaboration d'un modèle d'identité numérique adapté à la convergence

    L évolution des réseaux informatiques, et notamment d Internet, s ancre dans l émergence de paradigmes prépondérants tels que la mobilité et les réseaux sociaux. Cette évolution amène à considérer une réorganisation de la gestion des données circulant au cœur des réseaux. L accès à des services offrant de la vidéo ou de la voix à la demande depuis des appareils aussi bien fixes que mobiles, tels que les Smartphones, ou encore la perméabilité des informations fournies à des réseaux sociaux conduisent à s interroger sur la notion d identité numérique et, de manière sous-jacente, à reconsidérer les concepts de sécurité et de confiance. La contribution réalisée dans ce travail de thèse consiste, dans une première partie, à analyser les différents modèles d identité numérique existants ainsi que les architectures de fédération d identité, mais également les protocoles déployés pour l authentification et les problèmes de confiance engendrés par l absence d élément sécurisé tel qu une carte à puce. Dans une deuxième partie, nous proposons, en réponse aux éléments dégagés dans la partie précédente, un modèle d identité fortement attaché au protocole d authentification TLS embarqué dans un composant sécurisé, permettant ainsi de fournir les avantages sécuritaires exigibles au cœur des réseaux actuels tout en s insérant naturellement dans les différents terminaux, qu ils soient fixes ou mobiles. Enfin, dans une dernière partie, nous expliciterons plusieurs applications concrètes, testées et validées, de ce modèle d identité, afin d en souligner la pertinence dans des cadres d utilisation pratique extrêmement variés.IT networks evolution, chiefly Internet, roots within the emergence of preeminent paradigms such as mobility and social networks. This development naturally triggers the impulse to reorganize the control of data spreading throughout the whole network. Taking into account access to services such as video or voice on demand coming from terminals which can be fixed or mobile such as smartphones, or also permeability of sensitive information provided to social networks, these factors compel a necessary interrogation about digital identity as a concept. It also intrinsically raises a full-fledged reconsideration of security and trust concepts. The contribution of this thesis project is in line, in a first part, with the analysis of the existing manifold digital identity frameworks as well as the study of current authentication protocols and trust issues raised by the lack of trusted environment such as smartcards. In a second part, as an answer to the concerns suggested in the first part, we will advocate an identity framework strongly bounded to the TLS authentication protocol which needs to be embedded in a secure component, thus providing the mandatory security assets for today s networks while naturally fitting with a varied scope of terminals, be it fixed or mobile.     Strong authentication based on mobile application

    The user authentication in online services has evolved over time from the old username and password-based approaches to current strong authentication methodologies. Especially, the smartphone app has become one of the most important forms to perform the authentication. This thesis describes various authentication methods used previously and discusses about possible factors that generated the demand for the current strong authentication approach. We present the concepts and architectures of mobile application based authentication systems. Furthermore, we take closer look into the security of the mobile application based authentication approach. Mobile apps have various attack vectors that need to be taken under consideration when designing an authentication system. Fortunately, various generic software protection mechanisms have been developed during the last decades. We discuss how these mechanisms can be utilized in mobile app environment and in the authentication context. The main idea of this thesis is to gather relevant information about the authentication history and to be able to build a view of strong authentication evolution. This history and the aspects of the evolution are used to state hypothesis about the future research and development. We predict that the authentication systems in the future may be based on a holistic view of the behavioral patterns and physical properties of the user. Machine learning may be used in the future to implement an autonomous authentication concept that enables users to be authenticated with minimal physical or cognitive effort

    The deployment of more high-risk services such as online banking and government services on the Internet has meant that the need and demand for strong electronic identity is bigger today more than ever. Different stakeholders have different reasons for moving their services to the Internet, including cost savings, being closer to the customer or citizen, increasing volume and value of services among others. This means that traditional online identification schemes based on self-asserted identities are no longer sufficient to cope with the required level of assurance demanded by these services. Therefore, strong electronic identification methods that utilize identifiers rooted in real world identities must be provided to be used by customers and citizens alike on the Internet. This thesis focuses on studying state-of-the-art methods for providing reliable and mass market strong electronic identity in the world today. It looks at concrete real-world examples that enable real world identities to be transferred and used in the virtual world of the Internet. The thesis identifies crucial factors that determine what constitutes a strong electronic identity solution and through these factors evaluates and compares the example solutions surveyed in the thesis. As the Internet become more pervasive in our lives; mobile devices are becoming the primary devices for communication and accessing Internet services. This has thus, raised the question of what sort of strong electronic identity solutions could be implemented and how such solutions could adapt to the future. To help to understand the possible alternate futures, a scenario planning and analysis method was used to develop a series of scenarios from underlying key economic, political, technological and social trends and uncertainties. The resulting three future scenarios indicate how the future of strong electronic identity will shape up with the aim of helping stakeholders contemplate the future and develop policies and strategies to better position themselves for the future
