ADAPTS: An Intelligent Sustainable Conceptual Framework for Engineering Projects

    Get PDF
This paper presents a conceptual framework for the optimization of environmental sustainability in engineering projects, both for products and industrial facilities or processes. The main objective of this work is to propose a conceptual framework to help researchers to approach optimization under the criteria of sustainability of engineering projects, making use of current Machine Learning techniques. For the development of this conceptual framework, a bibliographic search has been carried out on the Web of Science. From the selected documents and through a hermeneutic procedure the texts have been analyzed and the conceptual framework has been carried out. A graphic representation pyramid shape is shown to clearly define the variables of the proposed conceptual framework and their relationships. The conceptual framework consists of 5 dimensions; its acronym is ADAPTS. In the base are: (1) the Application to which it is intended, (2) the available DAta, (3) the APproach under which it is operated, and (4) the machine learning Tool used. At the top of the pyramid, (5) the necessary Sensing. A study case is proposed to show its applicability. This work is part of a broader line of research, in terms of optimization under sustainability criteria.Telefónica Chair “Intelligence in Networks” of the University of Seville (Spain

Long range (LoRa) transmission technology enables energy-constrained devices such as the tiny sensor systems used in internet-of-things applications that are distributed over wide areas while still being able to establish appropriate connectivity. This has resulted in the development of an exponentially increasing number of different solutions and services based on LoRa, be they dedicated to the long-term monitoring of distributed plants and infrastructures or to human-centred applications such as safety-oriented sensor systems for use in the workplace. In dense LoRa networks, predicting the number of supported nodes in relation to their position and the propagation environment is essential for ensuring reliable and stable communication and minimising costs. In this paper, after comparing different path loss models based on a field measurement campaign for LoRa received signal strength indicator values within a university campus, two main modifications of the LoRa simulator tool were implemented. These were aimed at improving the accuracy of the prediction of the number of sustainable nodes in relation to the target data extraction rate set. The simulations based on field measurements demonstrated that through an improved path loss evaluation and the use of three gateways, the number of nodes could be increased theoretically from around 100 to around 6,000

An Internet of Things Based Air Pollution Detection Device for Mitigating Climate Changes

Climate Change, a key stabilizing factor, has now exceeded critical thresholds. The high energy consumption of cities is a major contributor to climate change because of CO2 emissions. In addition to the rise in urban populations throughout the worldwide, the complexity of todays cities and the strain they put on limited resources means that the causes and consequences of climate changes become even more concentrated. Internet of Things (IoT) advancements provide several possibilities for reducing the effects of climate change by merging existing information, design techniques, and breakthrough technology. The current state of monitoring technology is subpar; it is insensitive, inaccurate, and requires laboratory examination. Consequently, new, and better methods of surveillance are required. Air pollution is one of the main causes of climate change. We suggest a new IoT-based monitoring device for air pollution to address the shortcoming of the current setup. Gas sensors, Arduino IDE, and Wi-Fi module were used to assemble the IoT kit. The air is analyzed by the gas sensors, and the results are sent to the Arduino software development environment. By using a WiFi module, the Arduino IDE may send data to the monitor. The resulting device may be deployed in different cities to monitor the levels of air pollution with little cost, easy to use and high accuracy

An Investigation of the Policies and Crucial Sectors of Smart Cities Based on IoT Application

    Get PDF
As smart cities (SCs) emerge, the Internet of Things (IoT) is able to simplify more sophisticated and ubiquitous applications employed within these cities. In this regard, we investigate seven predominant sectors including the environment, public transport, utilities, street lighting, waste management, public safety, and smart parking that have a great effect on SC development. Our findings show that for the environment sector, cleaner air and water systems connected to IoT-driven sensors are used to detect the amount of CO2, sulfur oxides, and nitrogen to monitor air quality and to detect water leakage and pH levels. For public transport, IoT systems help traffic management and prevent train delays, for the utilities sector IoT systems are used for reducing overall bills and related costs as well as electricity consumption management. For the street-lighting sector, IoT systems are used for better control of streetlamps and saving energy associated with urban street lighting. For waste management, IoT systems for waste collection and gathering of data regarding the level of waste in the container are effective. In addition, for public safety these systems are important in order to prevent vehicle theft and smartphone loss and to enhance public safety. Finally, IoT systems are effective in reducing congestion in cities and helping drivers to find vacant parking spots using intelligent smart parking
