Spontaneous Dynamics of Asymmetric Random Recurrent Spiking Neural Networks
We study in this paper the effect of an unique initial stimulation on random
recurrent networks of leaky integrate and fire neurons. Indeed given a
stochastic connectivity this so-called spontaneous mode exhibits various non
trivial dynamics. This study brings forward a mathematical formalism that
allows us to examine the variability of the afterward dynamics according to the
parameters of the weight distribution. Provided independence hypothesis (e.g.
in the case of very large networks) we are able to compute the average number
of neurons that fire at a given time -- the spiking activity. In accordance
with numerical simulations, we prove that this spiking activity reaches a
steady-state, we characterize this steady-state and explore the transients.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figure
Statistical Model Checking for Stochastic Hybrid Systems
This paper presents novel extensions and applications of the UPPAAL-SMC model
checker. The extensions allow for statistical model checking of stochastic
hybrid systems. We show how our race-based stochastic semantics extends to
networks of hybrid systems, and indicate the integration technique applied for
implementing this semantics in the UPPAAL-SMC simulation engine. We report on
two applications of the resulting tool-set coming from systems biology and
energy aware buildings.Comment: In Proceedings HSB 2012, arXiv:1208.315
A Simple Generative Model of Collective Online Behaviour
Human activities increasingly take place in online environments, providing
novel opportunities for relating individual behaviours to population-level
outcomes. In this paper, we introduce a simple generative model for the
collective behaviour of millions of social networking site users who are
deciding between different software applications. Our model incorporates two
distinct components: one is associated with recent decisions of users, and the
other reflects the cumulative popularity of each application. Importantly,
although various combinations of the two mechanisms yield long-time behaviour
that is consistent with data, the only models that reproduce the observed
temporal dynamics are those that strongly emphasize the recent popularity of
applications over their cumulative popularity. This demonstrates---even when
using purely observational data without experimental design---that temporal
data-driven modelling can effectively distinguish between competing microscopic
mechanisms, allowing us to uncover new aspects of collective online behaviour.Comment: Updated, with new figures and Supplementary Informatio
Statistics of spike trains in conductance-based neural networks: Rigorous results
We consider a conductance based neural network inspired by the generalized
Integrate and Fire model introduced by Rudolph and Destexhe. We show the
existence and uniqueness of a unique Gibbs distribution characterizing spike
train statistics. The corresponding Gibbs potential is explicitly computed.
These results hold in presence of a time-dependent stimulus and apply therefore
to non-stationary dynamics.Comment: 42 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Journal of Mathematical Neuroscienc
Mathematical modelling plant signalling networks
During the last two decades, molecular genetic studies and the completion of the sequencing of the Arabidopsis thaliana genome have increased knowledge of hormonal regulation in plants. These signal transduction pathways act in concert through gene regulatory and signalling networks whose main components have begun to be elucidated. Our understanding of the resulting cellular processes is hindered by the complex, and sometimes counter-intuitive, dynamics of the networks, which may be interconnected through feedback controls and cross-regulation. Mathematical modelling provides a valuable tool to investigate such dynamics and to perform in silico experiments that may not be easily carried out in a laboratory. In this article, we firstly review general methods for modelling gene and signalling networks and their application in plants. We then describe specific models of hormonal perception and cross-talk in plants. This sub-cellular analysis paves the way for more comprehensive mathematical studies of hormonal transport and signalling in a multi-scale setting
