Over the past decade, Convolutional Networks (ConvNets) have renewed the perspectives of the research and industrial communities. Although this deep learning technique may be composed of multiple layers, its core operation is the convolution, an important linear filtering process. Easy and fast to implement, convolutions actually play a major role, not only in ConvNets, but in digital image processing and analysis as a whole, being effective for several tasks. However, aside from convolutions, researchers also proposed and developed non-linear filters, such as operators provided by mathematical morphology. Even though these are not so computationally efficient as the linear filters, in general, they are able to capture different patterns and tackle distinct problems when compared to the convolutions. In this paper, we propose a new paradigm for deep networks where convolutions are replaced by non-linear morphological filters. Aside from performing the operation, the proposed Deep Morphological Network (DeepMorphNet) is also able to learn the morphological filters (and consequently the features) based on the input data. While this process raises challenging issues regarding training and actual implementation, the proposed DeepMorphNet proves to be able to extract features and solve problems that traditional architectures with standard convolution filters cannot

Morphological Network: How Far Can We Go with Morphological Neurons?

In recent years, the idea of using morphological operations as networks has received much attention. Mathematical morphology provides very efficient and useful image processing and image analysis tools based on basic operators like dilation and erosion, defined in terms of kernels. Many other morphological operations are built up using the dilation and erosion operations. Although the learning of structuring elements such as dilation or erosion using the backpropagation algorithm is not new, the order and the way these morphological operations are used is not standard. In this paper, we have theoretically analyzed the use of morphological operations for processing 1D feature vectors and shown that this gets extended to the 2D case in a simple manner. Our theoretical results show that a morphological block represents a sum of hinge functions. Hinge functions are used in many places for classification and regression tasks (Breiman (1993)). We have also proved a universal approximation theorem -- a stack of two morphological blocks can approximate any continuous function over arbitrary compact sets. To experimentally validate the efficacy of this network in real-life applications, we have evaluated its performance on satellite image classification datasets since morphological operations are very sensitive to geometrical shapes and structures. We have also shown results on a few tasks like segmentation of blood vessels from fundus images, segmentation of lungs from chest x-ray and image dehazing. The results are encouraging and further establishes the potential of morphological networks.Comment: 35 pages, 19 figures, 7 table

A Learning Framework for Morphological Operators using Counter-Harmonic Mean

We present a novel framework for learning morphological operators using counter-harmonic mean. It combines concepts from morphology and convolutional neural networks. A thorough experimental validation analyzes basic morphological operators dilation and erosion, opening and closing, as well as the much more complex top-hat transform, for which we report a real-world application from the steel industry. Using online learning and stochastic gradient descent, our system learns both the structuring element and the composition of operators. It scales well to large datasets and online settings.Comment: Submitted to ISMM'1

Automatic detection of welding defects using the convolutional neural network

Quality control of welded joints is an important step before commissioning of various types of metal structures. The main obstacles to the commissioning of such facilities are the areas where the welded joint deviates from acceptable defective standards. The defects of welded joints include non-welded, foreign inclusions, cracks, pores, etc. The article describes an approach to the detection of the main types of defects of welded joints using a combination of convolutional neural networks and support vector machine methods. Convolutional neural networks are used for primary classification. The support vector machine is used to accurately define defect boundaries. As a preprocessing in our work, we use the methods of morphological filtration. A series of experiments confirms the high efficiency of the proposed method in comparison with pure CNN method for detecting defects

    SLIC Based Digital Image Enlargement

Low resolution image enhancement is a classical computer vision problem. Selecting the best method to reconstruct an image to a higher resolution with the limited data available in the low-resolution image is quite a challenge. A major drawback from the existing enlargement techniques is the introduction of color bleeding while interpolating pixels over the edges that separate distinct colors in an image. The color bleeding causes to accentuate the edges with new colors as a result of blending multiple colors over adjacent regions. This paper proposes a novel approach to mitigate the color bleeding by segmenting the homogeneous color regions of the image using Simple Linear Iterative Clustering (SLIC) and applying a higher order interpolation technique separately on the isolated segments. The interpolation at the boundaries of each of the isolated segments is handled by using a morphological operation. The approach is evaluated by comparing against several frequently used image enlargement methods such as bilinear and bicubic interpolation by means of Peak Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (PSNR) value. The results obtained exhibit that the proposed method outperforms the baseline methods by means of PSNR and also mitigates the color bleeding at the edges which improves the overall appearance.Comment: 6 page
