Modes of representation in contemporary Galician visual poetry
Visual poetry in Galicia had a plural and discontinuous existence in the twentieth century'! Its development in Galicia follows national (Spanish) and international artistic practices, while also engaging in the configuration of a local, national, and transnational Galician identity. The practice of different styles of visual poetry shows a rich line of creativity, especially in the last four decades. Their approaches coincide with sociocultural and economic changes in Spain, such as the end of the dictatorship in 1975, the consequent normalization of the Galician language, and more recently the progressive influence of globalization. This essay considers how current Galician visual poets reconceptualize these issues in the context of an international cultural and visual aesthetics
Natural Notation for the Domestic Internet of Things
This study explores the use of natural language to give instructions that
might be interpreted by Internet of Things (IoT) devices in a domestic `smart
home' environment. We start from the proposition that reminders can be
considered as a type of end-user programming, in which the executed actions
might be performed either by an automated agent or by the author of the
reminder. We conducted an experiment in which people wrote sticky notes
specifying future actions in their home. In different conditions, these notes
were addressed to themselves, to others, or to a computer agent.We analyse the
linguistic features and strategies that are used to achieve these tasks,
including the use of graphical resources as an informal visual language. The
findings provide a basis for design guidance related to end-user development

In Mother Tongue, a set of three screen-prints with integrated three sound pieces were presented at both the Multiple Matters (Vienna) and Print Without Borders (Oldenburg): part of the International Print Triennial 2010. The work was an investigation of how to represent in two-dimensional form such as print, a passage of time, and the ephemeral moments in the development of a childâs relationship with language.
The three prints depict recognizable visual representations of sound such as waveforms and phonetic symbols. These marks were visual artefacts of temporal sounds, used to archive and preserve transitory events/moments in space and time. A real-time articulatory visual feedback approach with target presentation for second language pronunciation learning
International audienceArticulatory information can support learning or remediating pronunciation of a second language (L2). This paper describes an electromagnetic articulometer-based visual-feedback approach using an articulatory target presented in real-time to facilitate L2 pronunciation learning. This approach trains learners to adjust articulatory positions to match targets for a L2 vowel estimated from productions of vowels that overlap in both L1 and L2. Training of Japanese learners for the American English vowel /ae/ that included visual training improved its pronunciation regardless of whether audio training was also included. Articulatory visual feedback is shown to be an effective method for facilitating L2 pronunciation learning
Using graph transformation algorithms to generate natural language equivalents of icons expressing medical concepts
A graphical language addresses the need to communicate medical information in
a synthetic way. Medical concepts are expressed by icons conveying fast visual
information about patients' current state or about the known effects of drugs.
In order to increase the visual language's acceptance and usability, a natural
language generation interface is currently developed. In this context, this
paper describes the use of an informatics method ---graph transformation--- to
prepare data consisting of concepts in an OWL-DL ontology for use in a natural
language generation component. The OWL concept may be considered as a
star-shaped graph with a central node. The method transforms it into a graph
representing the deep semantic structure of a natural language phrase. This
work may be of future use in other contexts where ontology concepts have to be

Creating Interaction Scenarios With a New Graphical User Interface
The field of human-centered computing has known a major progress these past
few years. It is admitted that this field is multidisciplinary and that the
human is the core of the system. It shows two matters of concern:
multidisciplinary and human. The first one reveals that each discipline plays
an important role in the global research and that the collaboration between
everyone is needed. The second one explains that a growing number of researches
aims at making the human commitment degree increase by giving him/her a
decisive role in the human-machine interaction. This paper focuses on these
both concerns and presents MICE (Machines Interaction Control in their
Environment) which is a system where the human is the one who makes the
decisions to manage the interaction with the machines. In an ambient context,
the human can decide of objects actions by creating interaction scenarios with

Artful Citizenship Project- Year 3
Artful Citizenship is an arts-integrated social studies curriculum project designed to provide third- through fifth- grade students and teachers with the tools necessary to: * develop visual literacy skills; * implement social science content across academic content areas; * create opportunities for integrated artistic response. Artful Citizenship is a pilot educational program funded by the US Department of Education, Arts in Education, Model Development and Dissemination Grant Program. It was developed by The Wolfsonian-Florida International University (FIU) in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), Visual Understanding in Education (VUE), a non-profit organization that develops learner-centered methods that use art to teach critical thinking and visual literacy, faculty from the FIU College of Education, and a team of independent education researchers and evaluators from Curva and Associates, a private research and evaluation firm. The Wolfsonian and its partners recently completed the three years of funded activities that included development, field testing, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of Artful Citizenship as part of the core social studies and language arts curricula in the third, fourth and fifth grades at three Miami-Dade County public elementary schools. All three schools have high percentages of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds who are at risk of academic failure. An additional school with similar demographics was included to serve as a comparison group for evaluation purposes. The evaluation addresses the central objectives of the program: teaching visual literacy in order to influence children's character and social development, and, ultimately, to improve academic achievement, as measured through norm-referenced tests and criterion- referenced test (Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test). The psychosocial dimensions included in the evaluation were Art Self-Concept, Art Enjoyment, Academic Self-Concept, and School/Civic Orientatio
Weakly-Supervised Alignment of Video With Text
Suppose that we are given a set of videos, along with natural language
descriptions in the form of multiple sentences (e.g., manual annotations, movie
scripts, sport summaries etc.), and that these sentences appear in the same
temporal order as their visual counterparts. We propose in this paper a method
for aligning the two modalities, i.e., automatically providing a time stamp for
every sentence. Given vectorial features for both video and text, we propose to
cast this task as a temporal assignment problem, with an implicit linear
mapping between the two feature modalities. We formulate this problem as an
integer quadratic program, and solve its continuous convex relaxation using an
efficient conditional gradient algorithm. Several rounding procedures are
proposed to construct the final integer solution. After demonstrating
significant improvements over the state of the art on the related task of
aligning video with symbolic labels [7], we evaluate our method on a
challenging dataset of videos with associated textual descriptions [36], using
