A Covert Channel Using Named Resources
A network covert channel is created that uses resource names such as
addresses to convey information, and that approximates typical user behavior in
order to blend in with its environment. The channel correlates available
resource names with a user defined code-space, and transmits its covert message
by selectively accessing resources associated with the message codes. In this
paper we focus on an implementation of the channel using the Hypertext Transfer
Protocol (HTTP) with Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) as the message names,
though the system can be used in conjunction with a variety of protocols. The
covert channel does not modify expected protocol structure as might be detected
by simple inspection, and our HTTP implementation emulates transaction level
web user behavior in order to avoid detection by statistical or behavioral
analysis.Comment: 9 page
The Digital Anatomist Information System and Its Use in the Generation and Delivery of Web-Based Anatomy Atlases
Advances in network and imaging technology, coupled with the availability of 3-D datasets
such as the Visible Human, provide a unique opportunity for developing information systems
in anatomy that can deliver relevant knowledge directly to the clinician, researcher or educator. A software framework is described for developing such a system within a distributed architecture that includes spatial and symbolic anatomy information resources, Web and custom servers, and authoring and end-user client programs. The authoring tools have been used to create 3-D atlases of the brain, knee and thorax that are used both locally and throughout the world. For the one and a half year period from June 1995–January 1997, the on-line atlases were accessed by over 33,000 sites from 94 countries, with an average of over 4000 ‘‘hits’’ per day, and 25,000 hits per day during peak exam periods. The atlases have been linked to by over 500 sites, and have received at least six unsolicited awards by outside rating institutions. The flexibility of the software framework has allowed the information system to evolve with advances in technology and representation methods. Possible new features include knowledge-based image retrieval and tutoring, dynamic generation of 3-D scenes, and eventually, real-time virtual reality navigation through the body. Such features, when coupled with other on-line biomedical information resources, should lead to interesting new ways for
managing and accessing structural information in medicine
AKARI-CAS --- Online Service for AKARI All-Sky Catalogues
The AKARI All-Sky Catalogues are an important infrared astronomical database
for next-generation astronomy that take over the IRAS catalog. We have
developed an online service, AKARI Catalogue Archive Server (AKARI-CAS), for
astronomers. The service includes useful and attractive search tools and visual
tools.
One of the new features of AKARI-CAS is cached SIMBAD/NED entries, which can
match AKARI catalogs with other catalogs stored in SIMBAD or NED. To allow
advanced queries to the databases, direct input of SQL is also supported. In
those queries, fast dynamic cross-identification between registered catalogs is
a remarkable feature. In addition, multiwavelength quick-look images are
displayed in the visualization tools, which will increase the value of the
service.
In the construction of our service, we considered a wide variety of
astronomers' requirements. As a result of our discussion, we concluded that
supporting users' SQL submissions is the best solution for the requirements.
Therefore, we implemented an RDBMS layer so that it covered important
facilities including the whole processing of tables. We found that PostgreSQL
is the best open-source RDBMS products for such purpose, and we wrote codes for
both simple and advanced searches into the SQL stored functions. To implement
such stored functions for fast radial search and cross-identification with
minimum cost, we applied a simple technique that is not based on dividing
celestial sphere such as HTM or HEALPix. In contrast, the Web application layer
became compact, and was written in simple procedural PHP codes. In total, our
system realizes cost-effective maintenance and enhancements.Comment: Yamauchi, C. et al. 2011, PASP..123..852

Online Homework for Agricultural Economics Instruction: Frankenstein’s Monster or Robo TA?
This paper describes the programming required for online homework, evaluates its use, and presents methods for student identification and for processing student input. Online homework applications were evaluated in a real class setting. Generally, online homework is cost effective for large classes that have numerous assignments and repeated usage. Online homework appears to increase learning through increased student study-time allocations. Students felt that online homework made course website interaction more productive. They also indicated that online homework increased their perception of the value of lectures and that its use in other courses would be welcome. All findings were highly statistically significant.computer-aided instruction, economics teaching methods, instruction cost effectiveness, online homework, Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession, A220, G130, Q100,
