Internet of Things (IoT) and the road to happiness

    Get PDF
Purpose – This study aims to provide a systematic review about the Internet of Things (IoT) and its impacts on happiness. It intends to serve as a platform for further research as it is sparse in in-depth analysis. Design/methodology/approach – This systematic review initially observed 2,501 literary articles through the ScienceDirect and WorldCat search engines before narrowing it down to 72 articles based on subject matter relevance in the abstract and keywords. Accounting for duplicates between search engines, the count was reduced to 66 articles. To finally narrow down all the literature used in this systematic review, 66 articles were given a critical readthrough. The count was finally reduced to 53 total articles used in this systematic review. Findings – This paper necessitates the claim that IoT will likely impact many aspects of our everyday lives. Through the literature observed, it was found that IoT will have some significant and positive impacts on people's welfare and lives. The unprecedented nature of IoTs impacts on society should warrant further research moving forward. Research limitations/implications – While the literature presented in this systematic review shows that IoT can positively impact the perceived or explicit happiness of people, the amount of literature found to supplement this argument is still on the lower end. They also necessitate the need for both greater depth and variety in this field of research. Practical implications – Since technology is already a pervasive element of most people’s contemporary lives, it stands to reason that the most important factors to consider will be in how we might benefit from IoT or, more notably, how IoT can enhance our levels of happiness. A significant implication is its ability to reduce the gap in happiness levels between urban and rural areas. Originality/value – Currently, the literature directly tackling the quantification of IoTs perceived influence on happiness has yet to be truly discussed broadly. This systematic review serves as a starting point for further discussion in the subject matter. In addition, this paper may lead to a better understanding of the IoT technology and how we can best advance and adapt it to the benefits of the society

The study examines the challenges and opportunities of introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) into the Supply Chain Management (SCM). This research focuses on the Logistic Management. The central research question is “What are the key challenges and opportunities of introducing AI and IoT applications into the Supply Chain Management?” The goal of this research is to collect the most appropriate literature to help create a conceptual framework, which involves the integration of the IoT and AI applications into contemporary supply chain management with the emphasis on the logistics management. Additionally, the role of 5G Network is closely studied in order to indicate its capabilities and the processing capacity that it can provide to the AI and IoT operations. In addition, the semi-structured online interview with the top managers from several companies was conducted in order to identify the degree of readiness of the companies for the AI and IoT applications in SCM. From the retrieved results, the major challenges of integrating the IoT into SCM are the security and privacy issues, the sensitivity of the data and high costs of the implementation at an initial stage. Moreover, the research results have shown that the IoT applications can positively affect the SCM activities, in particular, the high visibility across the SC, an effective traceability and an automated data collection. Furthermore, the predictive analysis of AI programs can help the SCM to eliminate the potential errors and failures in the processes.fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format

CAPABILITIES FOR DATA ANALYTICS IN INDUSTRIAL INTERNET OF THINGS (IIOT)

    Get PDF
The use of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies in various industrial sectors has resulted in the generation of large volumes of data that can be analyzed using analytics tools to improve firm performance. However, there is a gap in our understanding of the capabilities that companies need to create business value through data analytics in IIoT environments. Although previous research has extensively investigated general data analytics capabilities, the literature on these capabilities cannot be simply transferred to IIoT settings due to the unique characteristics of the IIoT. In this paper, we aim to contribute to our understanding of this phenomenon by identifying the capabilities required for IIoT data analytics. Firstly, we identify data analytics capabilities from existing literature. Next, we investigate the relevance of these capabilities in the context of IIoT, while also identifying novel capabilities that are specific to IIoT, by conducting 16 expert interviews within nine organizations. We identify a set of 24 capabilities for data analytics in IIoT, which we classify into an integrative framework. The proposed framework can assist industrial companies dealing with the complexities and uncertainties associated with IIoT data analytics initiatives

Identification of the critical enablers for perishable food supply chain using deterministic assessment models

Today’s perishable food supply chains must be resilient to handle volatile demands, environmental restrictions, and disruptions in order to meet customers’ requirements. The enablers of the perishable food supply chain have not yet been explored. In this paper, a bibliometric systematic literature review has been conducted to identify the articles related to the perishable food supply chain. Next, with these identified articles, a map is created with bibliographic data using Vosviewer network visualization software, and then the enablers were identified by conducting keyword co-occurrence analysis. Later, a total interpretive structural modeling (TISM) is employed to analyze the interrelationships among enablers and then determine each enabler’s hierarchies, further representing them in a diagraph. Finally, the identified enablers are classified using cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification (MICMAC) analysis, and the graph is plotted. The results obtained from the deterministic assessment model provide the critical enablers for the perishable food supply chain. The obtained critical enablers and their hierarchies provide valuable insights for researchers in the context of perishable food supply chain for further study. The authors are grateful to FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia who financially supported this work through the RD Units Project Scope: UIDP/04077/2020 and UIDB/04077/2020

E-commerce in Fresh Food Supply Chain in China and its role on Quality performance

    Get PDF
E-commerce companies have experienced a competitive environment in China, large companies benefit from more funding and talent, which puts a huge burden on small and medium size companies to find an effective way to manage quality with less investment. This paper gives a fresh food SC system’s view and analysis of improving fresh food quality. This paper focuses on small and medium-sized enterprises to analyse how companies can improve product quality through effective supply chain management, while ensuring the company's profitability. Using interviews with knowledgeable middle level managers in the SC, an analysis is carried out. The findings could help e-commerce companies in China strengthen their SC network and offer better quality standard of fresh food. Scarce literature discusses about fresh food e-commerce SCs in China, this research developed a basis background and knowledge. Nowadays, technology changes SC in various ways, this research explored how the advanced technology can be applied in fresh food SC. Some recommendations to companies that operate in this sector are provided. The limitations and future research directions of the fresh food supply chain are drawn

    New trends in logistics

The purpose of this study is to make the point of the situation in the logistics world considering the complex scenarios in which it operates, and based on the trends observed to hypothesize the future scenarios and the impacts they have on the economy, on individuls and on logistics processes. Logistics in fact improve efficiency and therefore reduces costs and improve productivity in many sectors, from manufacturing to retail. The economic growth has always been the result of revolutions or more innovation in productivity, like the steam engin revolutions, mass production model (Ford case) and 1970s the industrail automation. These innovations have boosted the economy because they have improved productivity, more productivity means greater growth in the economy. Logistics is the focus of the new industrial revolutions and it’s a real chance for any business. Proper use of this powerful tools will lead out of recession
