    An Intelligent Weather Station

Accurate measurements of global solar radiation, atmospheric temperature and relative humidity, as well as the availability of the predictions of their evolution over time, are important for different areas of applications, such as agriculture, renewable energy and energy management, or thermal comfort in buildings. For this reason, an intelligent, light-weight, self-powered and portable sensor was developed, using a nearest-neighbors (NEN) algorithm and artificial neural network (ANN) models as the time-series predictor mechanisms. The hardware and software design of the implemented prototype are described, as well as the forecasting performance related to the three atmospheric variables, using both approaches, over a prediction horizon of 48-steps-ahead.QREN SIDT [38798]; University of Algarve [032/2015]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

EVGA Japan co-operation report : Ochanomizu Research Visit 2014

    Get PDF
Three researchers from Japan worked on the EVGA project during the fall 2014. Joni Jämsä (M.Sc.) planned tasks for them based on the resumes they sent before arriving in Ylivieska. Tasks included mobile programming, user interfaces, and data visualizing. Detailed job descriptions included working on an acoustic measurement system based on iProtoxi processors, performing a technology review about intelligent traffic in Japanese technology, and working on a user interface design developed for the weather station and the electric vehicle measurement system (NES). The research visit lasted eight weeks

Wireless sensors and IoT platform for intelligent HVAC control

Energy consumption of buildings (residential and non-residential) represents approximately 40% of total world electricity consumption, with half of this energy consumed by HVAC systems. Model-Based Predictive Control (MBPC) is perhaps the technique most often proposed for HVAC control, since it offers an enormous potential for energy savings. Despite the large number of papers on this topic during the last few years, there are only a few reported applications of the use of MBPC for existing buildings, under normal occupancy conditions and, to the best of our knowledge, no commercial solution yet. A marketable solution has been recently presented by the authors, coined the IMBPC HVAC system. This paper describes the design, prototyping and validation of two components of this integrated system, the Self-Powered Wireless Sensors and the IOT platform developed. Results for the use of IMBPC in a real building under normal occupation demonstrate savings in the electricity bill while maintaining thermal comfort during the whole occupation schedule.QREN SIDT [38798]; Portuguese Foundation for Science & Technology, through IDMEC, under LAETA [ID/EMS/50022/2013

A deployed multi agent system for meteorological alerts

    Get PDF
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has a requirement for complex and evolving systems to manage its weather forecasting, monitoring and alerts. This paper describes a system that monitors in real time the current terminal area forecasts (forecasts for areas around airports) and alerts forecasters to inconsistencies between these and observations obtained from automatic weather station (AWS) data. The contributions of the paper are a description of the overall architecture including legacy components, and the mechanisms that have been used to interface to legacy components; a description of an inferencing mechanism, available in recent versions of the JACK Intelligent Agents toolkit which has been particularly useful in some of the reasoning needed in this application; and a detailed description of the architecture for data sharing and data management. The system is currently deployed and a project is underway to extend this to a much larger system

An intelligent solar powered battery buffered EV charging station with solar electricity forecasting and EV charging load projection functions

An intelligent energy management approach for a solar-powered EV charging station with energy storage has been studied and demonstrated for a level 2 charger at the University of California-Davis West Village. The approach introduces solar PV electrical energy forecasting and EV charging demand projection to optimize the energy management of the charging station. The percentage of cloud cover is extracted from a weather forecast website for estimating the available PV electrical energy. A linear fit of the historical EV charging load from the same day of the week over the previous six weeks is employed for extracting the charging pattern of the workplace EV charging station. Both simulations and actual operation show that intelligent energy management for a charging station with a buffer battery can reduce impacts of the EV charging system on utility grids in terms of peak power demand and energy exchange, reduce grid system losses, and benefit the charging station owner through the Time-of-Use rate plans

Large volume of data is growing because the organizations are continuously capturing the collective amount of data for better decision-making process.
