Centrifugal pumps are the most vital part of any process industry. A fault in centrifugal pump can affect imperative industrial processes. To ensure reliable operation of the centrifugal pump, this paper proposes a novel automated health state diagnosis framework for centrifugal pump that combines a signal to time-frequency imaging technique and an Adaptive Deep Convolution Neural Network model (ADCNN). First, the vibration signals corresponding to different health conditions of the centrifugal pump are acquired. Vibration signals obtained from the centrifugal pump carry a great deal of information and generally, statistical features are extracted from the vibration signals to retain meaningful fault information. However, these features are either insensitive to weak incipient faults or unsuitable for tracking severe faults, thus, decreasing the fault classification accuracy. To tackle this problem, a signal to time-frequency imaging technique is applied to the pump vibration signals. For this purpose, Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) is applied to decompose the vibration signals over different time-frequency scales and extract the pump fault information in both the time and frequency domains. The CWT scales form two-dimensional time-frequency images commonly referred to as scalograms. The CWT scalograms are then converted into grayscale images (SGI). Over the past few decades, CNN models have been established as an effective practice to process images for classification and pattern recognition. Consequently, the extracted CWTSGIs are finally provided as inputs to the proposed ADCNN architecture to achieve feature extraction and classification for centrifugal pump faults. The performance of the proposed diagnostic framework (CWTSGI + ADCNN) is validated with a vibration dataset collected from a testbed specifically designed for centrifugal pump diagnosis. The experimental results suggest that the proposed technique based on CWTSGI and ADCNN outperformed existing methods with an average performance improvement of 4.7 - 15.6%

In the current age of information explosion, newly invented technological sensors and software are now tightly integrated with our everyday lives. Many sensor processing algorithms have incorporated some forms of computational intelligence as part of their core framework in problem solving. These algorithms have the capacity to generalize and discover knowledge for themselves and learn new information whenever unseen data are captured. The primary aim of sensor processing is to develop techniques to interpret, understand, and act on information contained in the data. The interest of this book is in developing intelligent signal processing in order to pave the way for smart sensors. This involves mathematical advancement of nonlinear signal processing theory and its applications that extend far beyond traditional techniques. It bridges the boundary between theory and application, developing novel theoretically inspired methodologies targeting both longstanding and emergent signal processing applications. The topic ranges from phishing detection to integration of terrestrial laser scanning, and from fault diagnosis to bio-inspiring filtering. The book will appeal to established practitioners, along with researchers and students in the emerging field of smart sensors processing

Fine-grained fault recognition method for shaft orbit of rotary machine based on convolutional neural network

In the fault diagnosis of the shaft orbit of rotating machinery, there are few prejudgments about the severity of the faults, which is very important for fault repair. Therefore, a fine-grained recognition method is proposed to detect different severity faults by shaft orbit. Since different shaft orbits represent different type and different severity of faults, the convolutional neural network (CNN) is applied for identifying the shaft orbits to recognize the type and severity of the fault. The recognition rate of proposed fine-grained fault identification method is 97.96 % on the simulated shaft orbit database, and it takes only 0.31 milliseconds for the recognition of single sample. Experimental result indicated that the classification performance of the proposed method are better than the traditional machine learning models. Moreover, the method is applied for the identification of the measured shaft orbits of rotor with different degree of imbalance faults, and the testing accuracy of the experiments in measured shaft orbits is 97.14 %, which has verified the effectiveness of the proposed fine-grained fault recognition method

Treballs finals del Màster de Fonaments de Ciència de Dades, Facultat de matemàtiques, Universitat de Barcelona, Any: 2020, Tutor: Jordi Vitrià i Marca[en] The monitoring of machine health has become of great importance in the industry in the recent years. Unexpected equipment failures can lead to catastrophic consequences, such as production downtime and costly equipment replacement. Rolling bearings are one of the most delicate components of rotating equipment, being a common cause of machine failures. For this reason, predictive maintenance techniques of rolling bearings are fundamental to preserve the health of a machine. In this project, we present a deep learning approach to predict bearing failures in their early development. All methodologies are data-driven, therefore they do not assume any expert knowledge on the field nor require any information about the equipment’s operating conditions. For this reason, this approach is versatile and can be used to diagnose multiple machines

As an environmentally friendly transport option, electric vehicles (EVs) are endowed with the characteristics of low fossil energy consumption and low pollutant emissions. In today's growing market share of EVs, the safety and reliability of the powertrain system will be directly related to the safety of human life. Reliability problems of EV powertrains may occur in any power electronic (PE) component and mechanical part, both sudden and cumulative. These faults in different locations and degrees will continuously threaten the life of drivers and pedestrians, bringing irreparable consequences. Therefore, monitoring and predicting the real-time health status of EV powertrain is a high-priority, arduous and challenging task. The purposes of this study are to develop AI-supported effective safety improvement techniques for EV powertrains. In the first place, a literature review is carried out to illustrate the up-to-date AI applications for solving condition monitoring and fault detection issues of EV powertrains, where recent case studies between conventional methods and AI-based methods in EV applications are compared and analysed. On this ground this study, then, focuses on the theories and techniques concerning this topic so as to tackle different challenges encountered in the actual applications. In detail, first, as for diagnosing the bearing system in the earlier fault period, a novel inferable deep distilled attention network is designed to detect multiple bearing faults. Second, a deep learning and simulation driven approach that combines the domain-adversarial neural network and the lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) is proposed for achieve IPMSM permanent magnet temperature estimation work. Finally, to ensure the use safety of the IGBT module, deep learning -based IGBT modules’ double pulse test (DPT) efficiency enhancement is proposed and achieved via multimodal fusion networks and graph convolution networks

An Intelligent Fault Diagnosis Method for Bearings with Variable Rotating Speed Based on Pythagorean Spatial Pyramid Pooling CNN

    No full text
Deep learning methods have been introduced for fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. Most methods have good performance when processing bearing data at a certain rotating speed. However, most rotating machinery in industrial practice has variable working speed. When processing the bearing data with variable rotating speed, the existing methods have low accuracies, or need complex parameter adjustments. To solve this problem, a fault diagnosis method based on continuous wavelet transform scalogram (CWTS) and Pythagorean spatial pyramid pooling convolutional neural network (PSPP-CNN) is proposed in this paper. In this method, continuous wavelet transform is used to decompose vibration signals into CWTSs with different scale ranges according to the rotating speed. By adding a PSPP layer, CNN can process CWTSs in different sizes. Then the fault diagnosis of variable rotating speed bearing can be carried out by a single CNN model without complex parameter adjustment. Compared with a spatial pyramid pooling (SPP) layer that has been used in CNN, a PSPP layer locates as front layer of CNN. Thus, the features obtained by PSPP layer can be delivered to convolutional layers for further feature extraction. According to experiment results, this method has higher diagnosis accuracy for variable rotating speed bearing than other methods. In addition, the PSPP-CNN model trained by data at some rotating speeds can be used to diagnose bearing fault at full working speed
