    Electronic nose implementation for biomedical applications

    The growing rate of diabetes and undiagnosed diabetes related diseases is becoming a worldwide major health concern. The motivation of this thesis was to make use of a technology called the ‘electronic nose’ (eNose) for diagnosing diseases. It presents a comprehensive study on metabolic and gastro-intestinal disorders, choosing diabetes as a target disease. Using eNose technology with urinary volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is attractive as it allows non-invasive monitoring of various molecular constituents in urine. Trace gases in urine are linked to metabolic reactions and diseases. Therefore, urinary volatile compounds were used for diagnosis purposes in this thesis. The literature on existing eNose technologies, their pros and cons and applications in biomedical field was thoroughly reviewed, especially in detecting headspace of urine. Since the thesis investigates urinary VOCs, it is important to discover the stability of urine samples and their VOCs in time. It was discovered that urine samples lose their stability and VOCs emission after 9 months. A comprehensive study with 137 diabetic and healthy control urine samples was done to access the capability of commercially available eNose instruments for discrimination between these two groups. Metal oxide gas sensor based commercial eNose (Fox 4000, AlphaMOS Ltd) and field asymmetric ion mobility spectrometer (Lonestar, Owlstone Ltd) were used to analyse volatiles in urinary headspace. Both technologies were able to distinguish both groups with sensitivity and specificity of more than 90%. Then the project moved onto developing a Non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor system that is non-invasive, low-cost, precise, rapid, simple and patient friendly, and can be used at both hospitals and homes. NDIR gas sensing is one of the most widely used optical gas detection techniques. NDIR system was used for diagnosing diabetes and gastro related diseases from patient’s wastes. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first and only developed tuneable NDIR eNose system. The developed optical eNose is able to scan the whole infrared range between 3.1μm and 10.5 μm with step size of 20 nm. To simulate the effect of background humidity and temperature on the sensor response, a gas test rig system that includes gas mixture, VOC generator, humidity generator and gas analyser was designed to enable the user to have control of gas flow, humidity and temperature. This also helps to find out system’s sensitivity and selectivity. Finally, after evaluating the sensitivity and selectivity of optical eNose, it was tested on simple and complex odours. The results were promising in discriminating the odours. Due to insufficient sample batches received from the hospital, synthetic urine samples were purchased, and diabetic samples were artificially made. The optical eNose was able to successfully separate artificial diabetic samples from non-diabetic ones

    Detecting differences in volatile organic compounds produced by Leishmania infantum infected and uninfected dogs

    The leishmaniases are a complex of parasitic diseases which cause approximately 30,000 deaths annually. In Brazil, leishmaniasis is a significant burden (Bezerra et al., 2018). Dogs are the main reservoir host for Leishmania (Le.) infantum parasites and are the source of infection for the human population. Le. infantum is transmitted to people via the bite of an infected Lutzomyia (Lu.) longipalpis sandfly. To disrupt this transmission cycle, it is important to identify Leishmania infected dogs and remove them from the population. However, current diagnostic methods are complex, can be inaccurate and therefore limit effective reservoir control. The aim of this study was to determine whether Leishmania infantum infected dogs could be discriminated from uninfected dogs using three different methodologies; a VOC Analyser, behavioural bioassay and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Previous studies have shown that animals (e.g. dogs, hamsters) infected with Leishmania parasites produce odours that are different to those produced by uninfected animals (De Oliveira et al., 2008; Magalhães-Júnior et al., 2014b). In this study the VOC analyser demonstrated the ability to reliably discriminate between Leishmania infected and uninfected dogs, with high sensitivity (97-100%) and specificity (95-100%). The accuracy demonstrated of this diagnostic is an improvement on the current in-field DPP test used for cVL diagnosis, with a sensitivity of 75-89% and specificity of 56-70% having been recently reported (Figueiredo et al., 2018). This result suggests the potential for this approach for the rapid, non-invasive POC diagnosis of dogs infected with leishmaniasis. Studies on the behavioural response of male and female to the odour of infected and uninfected dogs showed that female Lu. longipalpis were significantly more attracted to infected odour whereas males were not. This result may suggest that Leishmania could be manipulating canine host odour in order to aid its own transmission. Increased attractiveness of infected dog odour suggests the potential of whole dog odour baited traps as a novel vector control methodology. Further GC/MS analysis confirmed the differences observed between the odour profiles of infected and uninfected dogs through both the VOC Analyser and behavioural bioassays. This analysis also allowed for the identification of the chemical structure and composition of compounds present in infected dogs which have the potential to not only enhance the VOC Analyser as a cVL specific diagnostic, but also could be investigated as artificial compounds for odour baited sandfly traps

This date is significant to UiTM since it is an official indication of 47 more scholarly contributions to the world of knowledge and innovation through the novelty of their research. To date UiTM has contributed 471 producers of knowledge through their doctoral research ranging from the field of Science and Technology, Business and Administration, and Social Science and Humanities. This Doctoral Abstracts epitomizes knowledge par excellence and a form of tribute to the 47 doctorates whose achievement we proudly celebrate. To the graduands, your success in achieving the highest academic qualification has demonstrated that you have indeed engineered your destiny well. The action of registering for a PhD program was not by chance but by choice. It was a choice made to realise your self-actualization level that is the highest level in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, while at the same time unleashing your potential in the scholarly research. Do not forget that life is a treasure and that its contents continue to be a mystery, thus, your journey of discovery through research has not come to an end but rather, is just the beginning. Enjoy life through your continuous discovery of knowledge, and spearhead innovation while you are at it. Make your alma mater proud through this continuous discovery as alumni of UiTM.     European position paper on rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps 2020

    The European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyps 2020 is the update of similar evidence based position papers published in 2005 and 2007 and 2012. The core objective of the EPOS2020 guideline is to provide revised, up-to-date and clear evidence-based recommendations and integrated care pathways in ARS and CRS. EPOS2020 provides an update on the literature published and studies undertaken in the eight years since the EPOS2012 position paper was published and addresses areas not extensively covered in EPOS2012 such as paediatric CRS and sinus surgery. EPOS2020 also involves new stakeholders, including pharmacists and patients, and addresses new target users who have become more involved in the management and treatment of rhinosinusitis since the publication of the last EPOS document, including pharmacists, nurses, specialised care givers and indeed patients themselves, who employ increasing self-management of their condition using over the counter treatments. The document provides suggestions for future research in this area and offers updated guidance for definitions and outcome measurements in research in different settings. EPOS2020 contains chapters on definitions and classification where we have defined a large number of terms and indicated preferred terms. A new classification of CRS into primary and secondary CRS and further division into localized and diffuse disease, based on anatomic distribution is proposed. There are extensive chapters on epidemiology and predisposing factors, inflammatory mechanisms, (differential) diagnosis of facial pain, allergic rhinitis, genetics, cystic fibrosis, aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease, immunodeficiencies, allergic fungal rhinosinusitis and the relationship between upper and lower airways. The chapters on paediatric acute and chronic rhinosinusitis are totally rewritten. All available evidence for the management of acute rhinosinusitis and chronic rhinosinusitis with or without nasal polyps in adults and children is systematically reviewed and integrated care pathways based on the evidence are proposed. Despite considerable increases in the amount of quality publications in recent years, a large number of practical clinical questions remain. It was agreed that the best way to address these was to conduct a Delphi exercise . The results have been integrated into the respective sections. Last but not least, advice for patients and pharmacists and a new list of research needs are included

    XIII International Congress in Animal Hygiene, June 17-21, 2007, Tartu, Estonia "Animal health, animal welfare and biosecurity" : proceedings. Volume 1

    KonverentsikogumikOn behalf of both the Organising Committee and the Scientific Committee, I am pleased to welcome you in Tartu, Estonia, to participate at the XIII International Congress of the International Society for Animal Hygiene (ISAH). The ISAH (www.isah-soc.org) was founded in 1970 and has today members from 48 countries throughout the world. ISAH can be considered as a group of scientists contributing to efficient, sustainable animal farming with healthy animals, providing wholesome food in a sound environment. Veterinarians and non-veterinary academic scientists (animal science, agricultural economics, engineers, microbiologists, public health professionals, epidemiologists etc., etc) and respective professionals in animal husbandry, who work and/or do research and education in the field of animal hygiene, can apply for a membership of ISAH, and are most welcome to attend ISAH congresses. The first ISAH congress was held in Budapest in 1973. The last ISAH main congress took place in Warsaw, Poland in 2005 and the last in-between symposium in Saint-Malo, France in 2004. Starting from Warsaw congress in 2005, the ISAH, considering the need for a more flexible and frequent exchange of scientific and practical knowledge, organizes its congresses every second year. The present, XIII ISAH congress in Tartu, Estonia, in June 17–21, 2007 is organised under the device "Animal health, animal welfare and biosecurity”. The scientific programme, trying to follow the scope of the ISAH and receive the feedback from modern animal husbandry and food production, concentrates with more profoundness on the following subjects: interaction between the environment and health and welfare of individual animal and herds; managing animal health in large dairy units; ensuring animal welfare during transportation and slaughter; economical implications considering animals’ health; possibilities of precision livestock farming in maintaining good health and welfare of animals; measures for prevention the development and spread of diseases and pathogens in animals including those posing risk to human health (zoonoses); food safety relevant infections and contaminations such as residues in food derived from animals; influence of the animal production on the environment and public health. The Proceedings from the XIII ISAH Congress are herewith presented. The papers on lectures from invited speakers, oral and poster presentations from 11 parallel sessions are included in this excellent compilation. In general, the printed contribution to the ISAH-2007 congress illustrates clearly the broad scientific field of the ISAH and related to it activities. I hereby would like to express my most sincere gratitude in the address of ISAH-2007 organising and scientific committees. Special thanks go to Frens Conference Services for their excellent organizational and technical contribution and to AS Triip for their outstanding printing job of these proceedings.
