Integrated maritime education and its suitability for technically advanced ships

In the first chapter a brief discription of shipping geography, trade, ports and types of ships available today and in future is given. In the chapter under the heading of The Influence of Modern Technology on Maritime Operations\u27\u27 the influence of modern technology\u27 in the fields of Communication, Navigation, Cargo Operations, Propulsion and Maintenance is given in order to highlight the degree of automation that is introduced which does not require highly trained personnel due to improved reliabality of equipment. In the chapter under the heading of The Impact of Modernized maritime Operations on E & T of Shipboard Personnel. I have highlighted the motive for integrating and the integration concept for officers and ratings. In this chapter I have argued out the wisdom to educate officers broadly on both the disciplines rather than narrowly training personnel on each discipline. Next chapter gives a brief outline of integrated Maritime Education as practiced in many leading maritime countries. In the last chapter as a conclusion an outline of a Integrated Maritime Education System is given with comments on some aspects of Maritime Education

A Diagnostic System for Remote Real-Time Monitoring of Marine Diesel-Electric Propulsion Systems

    Get PDF
An innovative diesel-electric power supply and propulsion system is a highly integrated electric system consisting of power generation, power distribution, and electrical drives. Every component of this system constantly produces operating data, which is read and evaluated by several programmable logic controllers, which in turn produce control signals. This thesis presents a diagnostic system that collects the operating data and control signals from all power supply, propulsion, and control components on board, saves them to a hard drive, and enables an engineer to view the data remotely over the internet, in real-time as well as in retrospect. An industrial computer, certified for on-board use, is embedded into the ship’s control unit, autonomously running the software that retrieves the data via an industrial Ethernet connection and makes it available to a remote user through a web interface or a database connection

Reference Model for Interoperability of Autonomous Systems

    Get PDF
This thesis proposes a reference model to describe the components of an Un-manned Air, Ground, Surface, or Underwater System (UxS), and the use of a single Interoperability Building Block to command, control, and get feedback from such vehicles. The importance and advantages of such a reference model, with a standard nomenclature and taxonomy, is shown. We overview the concepts of interoperability and some efforts to achieve common refer-ence models in other areas. We then present an overview of existing un-manned systems, their history, characteristics, classification, and missions. The concept of Interoperability Building Blocks (IBB) is introduced to describe standards, protocols, data models, and frameworks, and a large set of these are analyzed. A new and powerful reference model for UxS, named RAMP, is proposed, that describes the various components that a UxS may have. It is a hierarchical model with four levels, that describes the vehicle components, the datalink, and the ground segment. The reference model is validated by showing how it can be applied in various projects the author worked on. An example is given on how a single standard was capable of controlling a set of heterogeneous UAVs, USVs, and UGVs

New trends in electrical vehicle powertrains

    Get PDF
The electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle play a fundamental role in the forthcoming new paradigms of mobility and energy models. The electrification of the transport sector would lead to advantages in terms of energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, but would also be a great opportunity for the introduction of renewable sources in the electricity sector. The chapters in this book show a diversity of current and new developments in the electrification of the transport sector seen from the electric vehicle point of view: first, the related technologies with design, control and supervision, second, the powertrain electric motor efficiency and reliability and, third, the deployment issues regarding renewable sources integration and charging facilities. This is precisely the purpose of this book, that is, to contribute to the literature about current research and development activities related to new trends in electric vehicle power trains.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Predicting Port Tugboat Operations for Arriving and Departing Vessels Using Machine Learning

    Get PDF
Today, predicting the number of tugs required to assist in a towing operation many days in advance is difficult. Towing operations, being a complicated process, are prone to human errors and conflicts, which can have severe financial consequences for all parties involved. In this thesis, a method for extracting port tugboat operations for incoming and outgoing vessels is proposed. Using the obtained tugboat operations dataset, a machine learning model is built in order to predict the number of tugs required to assist in a towing operation. The data used is a year of historical Baltic Sea AIS data and weather data from nearby weather stations near the two analysis ports. The recommended ideas and their implementation were a success from a performance standpoint. The proposed method for extracting towing operations detected the vast majority of towing operations within the analysis area. The obtained tugboat operations dataset was then used during the model construction phase. The obtained models are port-specific. One of the models achieved an overall accuracy of 87.0\%, while the other achieved an accuracy of 91.5\%. The results demonstrated that it is possible to develop a viable predictive tool for tugboat operations. When deployed, the proposed method will enable port and tugboat operators to make faster and more efficient decisions, resulting in increased operational efficiency in the port area

The 25th annual issue of NASA's report on technology transfer and research and development (R&D) from its ten field centers is presented. The publication is divided into three sections. Section 1 comprises a summary of R&D over the last 25 years. Section 2 presents details of the mechanisms NASA uses to transfer technology to private industry as well as the assistance NASA provides in commercialization efforts. Section 3, which is the focal point of the publication, features success stories of manufacturers and entrepreneurs in developing commercial products and services that improve the economy and life in general
