    Feasibility study of multiantenna transmitter baseband processing on customized processor core in wireless local area devices

    The world of wireless communications is governed by a wide variety of the standards, each tailored to its specific applications and targets. The IEEE802.11 family is one of those standards which is specifically created and maintained by IEEE committee to im-plement the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) communication. By notably rapid growth of devices which exploit the WLAN technology and increasing demand for rich multimedia functionalities and broad Internet access, the WLAN technology should be necessarily enhanced to support the required specifications. In this regard, IEEE802.11ac, the latest amendment of the WLAN technology, was released which is taking advantage of the previous draft versions while benefiting from certain changes especially to the PHY layer to satisfy the promised requirements. This thesis evaluates the feasibility of software-based implementation for the MIMO transmitter baseband processing conforming to the IEEE802.11ac standard on a DSP core with vector extensions. The transmitter is implemented in four different transmis-sion scenarios which include 2x2 and 4x4 MIMO configurations, yielding beyond 1Gbps transmit bit rate. The implementation is done for the frequency-domain pro-cessing and real-time operation has been achieved when running at a clock fre-quency of 500MHz. The developed software solution is evaluated by profiling and analysing the imple-mentation using the tools provided by the vendor. We have presented the results with regards to number of clock cycles, power and energy consumption, and memory usage. The performance analysis shows that the SDR based implementation provides improved flexibility and reduced design effort compared to conventional approaches while main-taining power consumption close to fixed-function hardware solutions

    RAPID: Retrofitting IEEE 802.11ay Access Points for Indoor Human Detection and Sensing

    In this work we present RAPID, a joint communication and radar (JCR) system based on next-generation IEEE 802.11ay WiFi networks operating in the 60 GHz band. In contrast to most existing approaches for human sensing at millimeter-waves, which employ special-purpose radars to retrieve the small-scale Doppler effect (micro-Doppler) caused by human motion, RAPID achieves radar-level sensing accuracy by retrofitting IEEE 802.11ay access points. For this, it leverages the IEEE 802.11ay beam training mechanism to accurately localize and track multiple individuals, while the in-packet beam tracking fields are exploited to extract the desired micro-Doppler signatures from the time-varying phase of the channel impulse response (CIR). The proposed approach enables activity recognition and person identification with IEEE 802.11ay wireless networks without requiring modifications to the packet structure specified by the standard. RAPID is implemented on an IEEE 802.11ay-compatible FPGA platform with phased antenna arrays, which estimates the CIR from the reflections of transmitted packets. The proposed system is evaluated on a large dataset of CIR measurements, proving robustness across different environments and subjects, and outperforming state-of-the-art sub-6 GHz WiFi sensing techniques. Using two access points, RAPID reliably tracks multiple subjects, reaching activity recognition and person identification accuracies of 94% and 90%, respectively.Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures, 4 table

    Software Defined Radio Solutions for Wireless Communications Systems

    Wireless technologies have been advancing rapidly, especially in the recent years. Design, implementation, and manufacturing of devices supporting the continuously evolving technologies require great efforts. Thus, building platforms compatible with different generations of standards and technologies has gained a lot of interest. As a result, software defined radios (SDRs) are investigated to offer more flexibility and scalability, and reduce the design efforts, compared to the conventional fixed-function hardware-based solutions.This thesis mainly addresses the challenges related to SDR-based implementation of today’s wireless devices. One of the main targets of most of the wireless standards has been to improve the achievable data rates, which imposes strict requirements on the processing platforms. Realizing real-time processing of high throughput signal processing algorithms using SDR-based platforms while maintaining energy consumption close to conventional approaches is a challenging topic that is addressed in this thesis.Firstly, this thesis concentrates on the challenges of a real-time software-based implementation for the very high throughput (VHT) Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11ac amendment from the wireless local area networks (WLAN) family, where an SDR-based solution is introduced for the frequency-domain baseband processing of a multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) transmitter and receiver. The feasibility of the implementation is evaluated with respect to the number of clock cycles and the consumed power. Furthermore, a digital front-end (DFE) concept is developed for the IEEE 802.11ac receiver, where the 80 MHz waveform is divided to two 40 MHz signals. This is carried out through time-domain digital filtering and decimation, which is challenging due to the latency and cyclic prefix (CP) budget of the receiver. Different multi-rate channelization architectures are developed, and the software implementation is presented and evaluated in terms of execution time, number of clock cycles, power, and energy consumption on different multi-core platforms.Secondly, this thesis addresses selected advanced techniques developed to realize inband fullduplex (IBFD) systems, which aim at improving spectral efficiency in today’s congested radio spectrum. IBFD refers to concurrent transmission and reception on the same frequency band, where the main challenge to combat is the strong self-interference (SI). In this thesis, an SDRbased solution is introduced, which is capable of real-time mitigation of the SI signal. The implementation results show possibility of achieving real-time sufficient SI suppression under time-varying environments using low-power, mobile-scale multi-core processing platforms. To investigate the challenges associated with SDR implementations for mobile-scale devices with limited processing and power resources, processing platforms suitable for hand-held devices are selected in this thesis work. On the baseband processing side, a very long instruction word (VLIW) processor, optimized for wireless communication applications, is utilized. Furthermore, in the solutions presented for the DFE processing and the digital SI canceller, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) multi-core central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) are used with the aim of investigating the performance enhancement achieved by utilizing parallel processing.Overall, this thesis provides solutions to the challenges of low-power, and real-time software-based implementation of computationally intensive signal processing algorithms for the current and future communications systems

    Performance of MIMO Schemes in Radio-over-fibre-based Distributed Antenna System

    The research presented in this thesis has focused on the use of MIMO wireless communications in a RoF-based DAS to improve wireless coverage and capacity performance in an indoor environment. The aim is to analyse the practical issues that cause throughput to deteriorate when commercial MIMO APs are used in a RoF-DAS, and also to verify that improved performance - lower error rates and higher capacities - can be achieved by a large physical separation between the RAUs when specific multi-antenna scheme algorithms are used. The performance of an IEEE 802.11n MIMO-supported AP and IEEE 802.11g spatial-diversity-supported AP are investigated in a RoF-DAS when different fibre lengths are connecting the AP in the central unit to the RAUs, and when the RAUs are widely separated. The analysis indicates that for MIMO, the throughput drops rapidly due to severe ISI caused by differential delay when the fibre-length difference exceeds a certain distance, while for spatial diversity high throughputs can be maintained even at large fibre-length difference. Further, it was observed that largely separated RAU may lead to power imbalances and the throughput drops in specific wireless user's positions when the received power imbalance was above 12-15dB for MIMO-supported AP, while for spatial-diversity-supported AP the power imbalance does not affect the throughput. The majority of previous works on RoF-DAS for improving MIMO systems were based on commercial products and the specific algorithms used within these products are unknown. An investigation was carried out at microwave frequency with SIMO algorithms in RoF-DAS uplink, MISO and MIMO algorithms in RoF-DAS downlink, and compared with the performance of a SISO system. This investigation was later extended to millimetre-wave frequency where larger bands of frequency are available enabling the possibility of wider bandwidth and higher data rates. The result shows significantly reduced error rate and modestly increased capacity for a wireless 1x2 SIMO uplink using MRC algorithm and 2x1 MISO downlink using Alamouti STBC algorithm. Also, error rate was reduced for a wireless 2x2 MIMO downlink using the zero-forcing algorithm while, most importantly, greatly increased capacity was achieved through the spatial multiplexing gain

    An improved medium access control protocol for real-time applications in WLANs and its firmware development

    The IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), commonly known as Wi-Fi, has emerged as a popular internet access technology and researchers are continuously working on improvement of the quality of service (QoS) in WLAN by proposing new and efficient schemes. Voice and video over Internet Protocol (VVoIP) applications are becoming very popular in Wi-Fi enabled portable/handheld devices because of recent technological advancements and lower service costs. Different from normal voice and video streaming, these applications demand symmetric throughput for the upstream and downstream. Existing Wi-Fi standards are optimised for generic internet applications and fail to provide symmetric throughput due to traffic bottleneck at access points. Performance analysis and benchmarking is an integral part of WLAN research, and in the majority of the cases, this is done through computer simulation using popular network simulators such as Network Simulator ff 2 (NS-2) or OPNET. While computer simulation is an excellent approach for saving time and money, results generated from computer simulations do not always match practical observations. This is why, for proper assessment of the merits of a proposed system in WLAN, a trial on a practical hardware platform is highly recommended and is often a requirement. In this thesis work, with a view to address the abovementioned challenges for facilitating VoIP and VVoIP services over Wi-Fi, two key contributions are made: i) formulating a suitable medium access control (MAC) protocol to address symmetric traffic scenario and ii) firmware development of this newly devised MAC protocol for real WLAN hardware. The proposed solution shows signifocant improvements over existing standards by supporting higher number of stations with strict QoS criteria. The proposed hardware platform is available off-the-shelf in the market and is a cost effective way of generating and evaluating performance results on a hardware system

    Supporting code mobility and dynamic reconfigurations over Wireless MAC Processor Prototype

    Mobile networks for Internet Access are a fundamental segment of Internet access net- works, where resource optimization are really critical because of the limited bandwidth availability. While traditionally resource optimizations have been focused on high effi- cient modulation and coding schemes, to be dynamically tuned according to the wireless channel and interference conditions, it has also been shown how medium access schemes can have a significant impact on the network performance according to the application and networking scenarios. This thesis work proposes an architectural solution for supporting Medium Access Con- trol (MAC) reconfigurations in terms of dynamic programming and code mobility. Since the MAC protocol is usually implemented in firmware/hardware (being constrained to very strict reaction times and to the rules of a specific standard), our solution is based on a different wireless card architecture, called Wireless MAC Processor (WMP), where standard protocols are replaced by standard programming interfaces. The control architecture developed in this thesis exploits this novel behavioral model of wireless cards for extending the network intelligence and enabling each node to be remotely reprogrammed by means a so called “MAC Program”, i.e. a software element that defines the description of a MAC protocol. This programmable protocol can be remotely injected and executed on running network devices allowing on-the-fly MAC reconfigurations. This work aim to obtain a formal description of the a software defined wireless network requirements and define a mechanism for a reliable MAC program code mobility throw the network elements, transparently to the upper-level and supervised by a global con- trol logic that optimizes the radio resource usage; it extends a single protocol paradigm implementation to a programmable protocol abstraction and redefines the overall wire- less network view with support for cognitive adaptation mechanisms. Este tipo de modulacións proporcionan unha alta eficiencia espectral á vez que permiten corrixir de forma sinxela os efectos da canle radio. Estes sistemas utilizan OFDMA como mecanismo para a repartición dos recursos radio dispoñibles entre os diferentes usuarios. Este repartimento realízase asignando un subconxunto de subportadoras a cada usuario nun instante de tempo determinado. Isto aporta unha gran flexibilidade ó sistema que lle permite adaptarse tanto ós requisitos de calidade de servizo dos usuarios como ó estado da canle radio. A capa de acceso ó medio (MAC) destes sistemas encárgase de configurar os diversos parámetros proporcionados pola capa física OFDMA, ademais de xestionar os diversos fluxos de información de cada usuario, transformando os paquetes de capas superiores en paquetes da capa física. Neste traballo estúdase o deseño e implementación das capas MAC e PHY de sistemas de comunicación 4G ademais da súa aplicabilidade en sistemas de transporte ferroviarios. Por unha parte, abórdase o deseño e implementación en tempo real do estándar WiMAX. Estúdanse os mecanismos necesarios para establecer comunicacións bidireccionais entre unha estación base e múltiples dispositivos móbiles. Ademais, estúdase como realizar esta implementación nunha arquitectura hardware baseada en DSPs e FPGAs, na que se implementan as capas MAC e PHY. Dado que esta arquitectura ten uns recursos computacionais limitados, tamén se estudan as necesidades de cada módulo do sistema para poder garantir o funcionamento en tempo real do sistema completo. Por outra parte, tamén se estuda a aplicabilidade dos sistemas 4G a sistemas de transporte públicos. Os sistemas de comunicacións e sinalización son unha parte vital para os sistemas de transporte ferroviario e metro. As comunicacións sen fíos utilizadas por estes sistemas deben ser robustas e proporcionar unha alta fiabilidade para permitir a supervisión, control e seguridade do tráfico ferroviario. Para levar a cabo esta avaliación de viabilidade realízanse simulacións de redes de comunicacións LTE en contornos de transporte ferroviarios, comprobando o cumprimento dos requisitos de fiabilidade e seguridade. Realízanse diferentes simulacións do sistema de comunicacións para poder ser avaliadas e seleccionar a configuración e arquitectura do sistema máis axeitada en función do escenario considerado. Tamén se efectúan simulacións de redes baseadas en Wi-Fi, dado que é a solución máis utilizada nos metros, para confrontar os resultados cos obtidos para LTE. Para que os resultados das simulacións sexan realistas débense empregar modelos de propagación radio axeitados. Nas simulacións utilízanse tanto modelos deterministas como modelos baseados nos resultados de campañas de medida realizadas nestes escenarios. Nas simulacións empréganse os diferentes fluxos de información destes escenarios para comprobar que se cumpren os requisitos de calidade de servicio (QoS). Por exemplo, os fluxos críticos para o control ferroviario, como European Train Control System (ETCS) ou Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC), necesitan unha alta fiabilidade e un retardo mínimo nas comunicacións para garantir o correcto funcionamento do sistema.[Resumen] Los sistemas de comunicación inalámbricos de cuarta y quinta generación (4G y 5G) utilizan una capa física (PHY) basada en modulaciones multiportadora para la transmisión de datos con un gran ancho de banda. Este tipo de modulaciones han demostrado tener una alta eficiencia espectral a la vez que permiten corregir de forma sencilla los efectos del canal radio. Estos sistemas utilizan OFDMA como mecanismo para el reparto de los recursos radio disponibles entre los diferentes usuarios. Este reparto se realiza asignando un subconjunto de subportadoras a cada usuario en un instante de tiempo determinado. Esto aporta una gran flexibilidad al sistema que le permite adaptarse tanto a los requisitos de calidad de servicio de los usuarios como al estado del canal radio. La capa de acceso al medio (MAC) de estos sistemas se encarga de configurar los diversos parámetros proporcionados por la capa física OFDMA, además de gestionar los diversos flujos de información de cada usuario, transformando los paquetes de capas superiores en paquetes de la capa física. En este trabajo se estudia el diseño e implementación de las capas MAC y PHY de sistemas de comunicación 4G además de su aplicabilidad en sistemas de transporte ferroviarios. Por una parte, se aborda el diseño e implementación en tiempo real del estándar WiMAX. Se estudian los mecanismos necesarios para establecer comunicaciones bidireccionales entre una estación base y múltiples dispositivos móviles. Además, se estudia cómo realizar esta implementación en una arquitectura hardware basada en DSPs y FPGAs, en la que se implementan las capas MAC y PHY. Dado que esta arquitectura tiene unos recursos computacionales limitados, también se estudian las necesidades de cada módulo del sistema para poder garantizar el funcionamiento en tiempo real del sistema completo. Por otra parte, también se estudia la aplicabilidad de los sistemas 4G a sistemas de transporte públicos. Los sistemas de comunicaciones y señalización son una parte vital para los sistemas de transporte ferroviario y metro. Las comunicaciones inalámbricas utilizadas por estos sistemas deben ser robustas y proporcionar una alta fiabilidad para permitir la supervisión, control y seguridad del tráfico ferroviario. Para llevar a cabo esta evaluación de viabilidad se realizan simulaciones de redes de comunicaciones LTE en entornos de transporte ferroviarios, comprobando si se cumplen los requisitos de fiabilidad y seguridad. Se realizan diferentes simulaciones del sistema de comunicaciones para poder ser evaluados y seleccionar la configuración y arquitectura del sistema más adecuada en función del escenario planteado. También se efectúan simulaciones de redes basadas en Wi-Fi, dado que es la solución más utilizada en los metros, para comparar los resultados con los obtenidos para LTE. Para que los resultados de las simulaciones sean realistas se deben utilizar modelos de propagación radio apropiados. En las simulaciones se utilizan tanto modelos deterministas como modelos basados en los resultados de campañas de medida realizadas en estos escenarios. En las simulaciones se utilizan los diferentes flujos de información de estos escenarios para comprobar que se cumplen sus requisitos de calidad de servicio. Por ejemplo, los flujos críticos para el control ferroviario, como European Train Control System (ETCS) o Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC), necesitan una alta fiabilidad y un retardo bajo en las comunicaciones para garantizar el correcto funcionamiento del sistema.[Abstract] The fourth and fifth generation wireless communication systems (4G and 5G) use a physical layer (PHY) based on multicarrier modulations for data transmission using high bandwidth. This type of modulations has shown to provide high spectral efficiency while allowing low complexity radio channel equalization. These systems use OFDMA as a mechanism for distributing the available radio resources among different users. This allocation is done by assigning a subset of subcarriers to each user in a given instant of time. This provides great flexibility to the system that allows it to adapt to both the quality of service requirements of users and the radio channel state. The media access layer (MAC) of these systems is in charge of configuring the multiple OFDMA PHY layer parameters, in addition to managing the data flows of each user, transforming the higher layer packets into PHY layer packets. This work studies the design and implementation of MAC and PHY layers of 4G communication systems as well as their applicability in rail transport systems. On the one hand, the design and implementation in real time of the WiMAX standard is addressed. The required mechanisms to establish bidirectional communications between a base station and several mobile devices are also evaluated. Moreover, a MAC layer and PHY layer implementation is presented, using a hardware architecture based in DSPs and FPGAs. Since this architecture has limited computational resources, the requirements of each processing block of the system are also studied in order to guarantee the real time operation of the complete system. On the other hand, the applicability of 4G systems to public transportation systems is also studied. Communications and signaling systems are a vital part of rail and metro transport systems. The wireless communications used by these systems must be robust and provide high reliability to enable the supervision, control and safety of rail traffic. To carry out this feasibility assessment, LTE communications network simulations are performed in rail transport environments to verify that reliability and safety requirements are met. Several simulations are carried out in order to evaluate the system performance and select the most appropriate system configuration in each case. Simulations of Wi-Fi based networks are also carried out, since it is the most used solution in subways, to compare the results with those obtained for LTE. To perform the simulations correctly, appropriate radio propagation models must be used. Both deterministic models and models based on the results of measurement campaigns in these scenarios are used in the simulations. The simulations use the different information flows present in the railway transportation systems to verify that its quality of service requirements are met. For example, critical flows for railway control, such as the European Train Control System (ETCS) or Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC), require high reliability and low delay communications to ensure the proper functioning of the system
