    Linking design and manufacturing domains via web-based and enterprise integration technologies

    The manufacturing industry faces many challenges such as reducing time-to-market and cutting costs. In order to meet these increasing demands, effective methods are need to support the early product development stages by bridging the gap of communicating early design ideas and the evaluation of manufacturing performance. This paper introduces methods of linking design and manufacturing domains using disparate technologies. The combined technologies include knowledge management supporting for product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, aggregate process planning systems, workflow management and data exchange formats. A case study has been used to demonstrate the use of these technologies, illustrated by adding manufacturing knowledge to generate alternative early process plan which are in turn used by an ERP system to obtain and optimise a rough-cut capacity plan

    Designing Information System To Support Business Process Improvement In A Small-Mid Size Bottled Drinking Water Industry

    Due to inefficiencies of the business processes in small-mid size of bottled drinking water industries, it is necessary to improve them. The improvements are carried out in business processes of production, warehouse, delivery, marketing, and finance departments. The main causes of the inefficiencies are the inefficiencies of the business process itself and that the business processes of those departments were not integrated. This paper is concerned with designing information system to support for the integration of those departments. First, we mapped the business process of each department using flow diagram. Then analyze the inefficiencies of each department. Next, we redesign the business processes and standardize them. The next step is integrating the business processes by designing the information system. We design the information system modular. The modules are marketing module, production module, logistic module and finance module. Data Flow Diagram (DFD) is used to model the system. Relational database management system (RDBMS) is used to design the database. User interfaces are built to ease in using the program application. The outputs of the information system are reports and documents in monitor screen view and in printing. The validation showed that the information system designed can support the business process improvements.     The paper reviews product data technology initiatives in the construction sector and provides a synthesis of related ICT industry needs. A comparison between (a) the data centric characteristics of Product Data Technology (PDT) and (b) ontology with a focus on semantics, is given, highlighting the pros and cons of each approach. The paper advocates the migration from data-centric application integration to ontology-based business process support, and proposes inter-enterprise collaboration architectures and frameworks based on semantic services, underpinned by ontology-based knowledge structures. The paper discusses the main reasons behind the low industry take up of product data technology, and proposes a preliminary roadmap for the wide industry diffusion of the proposed approach.     Since the rise of music on the internet, record companies have reported falling sales of physical products. This has occurred at a time when technology has radically increased choice, availability and the opportunity for the consumer to purchase music. As the music industry has moved from a product to a service business model, has the loss of sales meant they have not taken their customers with them? This paper provides a description of different music consumers based upon quantitative analysis of consumer characteristics. The paper then undertakes an exploration of the relationship between the consumer groups and their purchasing preference in relation to intangible ‘service’ purchase such as downloaded music and the purchase of a tangible physical product such as CDs or vinyl. In addition, we analyse the relationship between consumer types and their propensity to actively engage with music communities, such as through engagement with social media, and thus their willingness to coproduce greater value. Finally we explore the moderating effects of age and time devoted to listening to music on purchasing preferences and music discovery
