Malleable coding for updatable cloud caching
In software-as-a-service applications provisioned through cloud computing, locally cached data are often modified with updates from new versions. In some cases, with each edit, one may want to preserve both the original and new versions. In this paper, we focus on cases in which only the latest version must be preserved. Furthermore, it is desirable for the data to not only be compressed but to also be easily modified during updates, since representing information and modifying the representation both incur cost. We examine whether it is possible to have both compression efficiency and ease of alteration, in order to promote codeword reuse. In other words, we study the feasibility of a malleable and efficient coding scheme. The tradeoff between compression efficiency and malleability cost-the difficulty of synchronizing compressed versions-is measured as the length of a reused prefix portion. The region of achievable rates and malleability is found. Drawing from prior work on common information problems, we show that efficient data compression may not be the best engineering design principle when storing software-as-a-service data. In the general case, goals of efficiency and malleability are fundamentally in conflict. This work was supported in part by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (LRV), Grant CCR-0325774, and Grant CCF-0729069. StackInsights: Cognitive Learning for Hybrid Cloud Readiness
Hybrid cloud is an integrated cloud computing environment utilizing a mix of
public cloud, private cloud, and on-premise traditional IT infrastructures.
Workload awareness, defined as a detailed full range understanding of each
individual workload, is essential in implementing the hybrid cloud. While it is
critical to perform an accurate analysis to determine which workloads are
appropriate for on-premise deployment versus which workloads can be migrated to
a cloud off-premise, the assessment is mainly performed by rule or policy based
approaches. In this paper, we introduce StackInsights, a novel cognitive system
to automatically analyze and predict the cloud readiness of workloads for an
enterprise. Our system harnesses the critical metrics across the entire stack:
1) infrastructure metrics, 2) data relevance metrics, and 3) application
taxonomy, to identify workloads that have characteristics of a) low sensitivity
with respect to business security, criticality and compliance, and b) low
response time requirements and access patterns. Since the capture of the data
relevance metrics involves an intrusive and in-depth scanning of the content of
storage objects, a machine learning model is applied to perform the business
relevance classification by learning from the meta level metrics harnessed
across stack. In contrast to traditional methods, StackInsights significantly
reduces the total time for hybrid cloud readiness assessment by orders of
magnitude
Moving Multimedia Simulations into the Cloud: a Cost-Effective Solution
Researchers often demand bursts of computing power to quickly obtain the results of certain simulation activities. Multimedia communication simulations usually belong to such category. They may require several days on a generic PC to test a comprehensive set of conditions depending on the complexity of the scenario. This paper proposes to use a cloud computing framework to accelerate these simulations and, consequently, research activities, while at the same time reducing the overall costs. A practical simulation example is shown, representative of a typical simulation of H.264/AVC video communications over a wireless channel. This work shows that, by means of a commercial cloud computing provider, the gains of the proposed technique compared to more traditional solutions using dedicated computers can be significant in terms of speed and cost reductio
