    IDL-XML based information sharing model for enterprise integration

    CJM is a mechanized approach to problem solving in an enterprise. Its basis is intercommunication between information systems, in order to provide faster and more effective decision making process. These results help minimize human error, improve overall productivity and guarantee customer satisfaction. Most enterprises or corporations started implementing integration by adopting automated solutions in a particular process, department, or area, in isolation from the rest of the physical or intelligent process resulting in the incapability for systems and equipment to share information with each other and with other computer systems. The goal in a manufacturing environment is to have a set of systems that will interact seamlessly with each other within a heterogeneous object framework overcoming the many barriers (language, platforms, and even physical location) that do not grant information sharing. This study identifies the data needs of several information systems of a corporation and proposes a conceptual model to improve the information sharing process and thus Computer Integrated Manufacturing. The architecture proposed in this work provides a methodology for data storage, data retrieval, and data processing in order to provide integration at the enterprise level. There are four layers of interaction in the proposed IXA architecture. The name TXA (DDL - XML Architecture for Enterprise Integration) is derived from the standards and technologies used to define the layers and corresponding functions of each layer. The first layer addresses the systems and applications responsible for data manipulation. The second layer provides the interface definitions to facilitate the interaction between the applications on the first layer. The third layer is where data would be structured using XML to be stored and the fourth layer is a central repository and its database management system

    Strategies for the online dissemination of large geographically disaggregated time-series

    This thesis investigates the various strategies used to produce a large on-line database which stores its data in the terms of dates and areas. The database studied was Nomis which was released in 1982 and provides remote access to official labour market data. The Nomis system underwent a complete redesign in 1997. A detailed account of the 'Old Nomis' system is provided in order to set the context for a study of its limitations. This study discusses the limitations due to the data design of the original model and code organisation as well as the limitations of the command interface and geographical management. The next part of the study was to investigate different methods of implementing a redesign of the original system. This focused on the choice of technology available both in terms of software and hardware, ways of improving the user interface, designing a new data model and the development of a new geographical management system. Once the new system was in place a menu-style interface was developed to provide a more user-friendly way to access the Nomis data. Various technologies were considered and the decision was taken to use the basic Web technology of HTML and forms due mainly to its accessibility to the majority of Nomis users and supported by all WWW browsers. Future Web technologies are also discussed. The success of the redesign was evaluated in terms of examining the 'New Nomis' interface to see if limitations had been addressed. Also the 'Beta Testing' process was discussed with various users feedback indicating possible strengths and weaknesses of the 'New Nomis' system. Usage level performance graphs were also considered which compare usage levels of the 'Old Nomis' system against the 'New Nomis' system

    A performance measurement tool for the resource access decider authorization service prototype

    The RAD (Resource Access Decider) authorization service is implemented at CADSE (Center for Advanced Distributed Systems Engineering) as a prototype based on the OMG (Object Management Group) CORBA (Common Object Reference Broker Architecture) specification for RAD (Resource Access Decider) facility. It is a part of the research towards developing performance efficient and available distributed authorization service. In order to test the performance of such an implementation, measurements have to be made to obtain data, which can be used to analyze the resource consumption and system behavior under different configurations. Such tests will have to be performed throughout the development process and this requires automating the performance measurement process to streamline the different stages of data gathering, analysis and interpretation. This thesis presents a performance measurement tool based on the DOVE (Distributed Object Visualization Environment) framework, capable of running the tests, gathering the data, computing and interpreting the data into graphical formats. The tool also provides a view of the system behavior by monitoring the performance of the individual components within the RAD prototype
