Rethinking Zero-shot Video Classification: End-to-end Training for Realistic Applications
Trained on large datasets, deep learning (DL) can accurately classify videos into hundreds of diverse classes. However, video data is expensive to annotate. Zero-shot learning (ZSL) proposes one solution to this problem. ZSL trains a model once, and generalizes to new tasks whose classes are not present in the training dataset. We propose the first end-to-end algorithm for ZSL in video classification. Our training procedure builds on insights from recent video classification literature and uses a trainable 3D CNN to learn the visual features. This is in contrast to previous video ZSL methods, which use pretrained feature extractors. We also extend the current benchmarking paradigm: Previous techniques aim to make the test task unknown at training time but fall short of this goal. We encourage domain shift across training and test data and disallow tailoring a ZSL model to a specific test dataset. We outperform the state-of-the-art by a wide margin. ImageSpirit: Verbal Guided Image Parsing
Humans describe images in terms of nouns and adjectives while algorithms
operate on images represented as sets of pixels. Bridging this gap between how
humans would like to access images versus their typical representation is the
goal of image parsing, which involves assigning object and attribute labels to
pixel. In this paper we propose treating nouns as object labels and adjectives
as visual attribute labels. This allows us to formulate the image parsing
problem as one of jointly estimating per-pixel object and attribute labels from
a set of training images. We propose an efficient (interactive time) solution.
Using the extracted labels as handles, our system empowers a user to verbally
refine the results. This enables hands-free parsing of an image into pixel-wise
object/attribute labels that correspond to human semantics. Verbally selecting
objects of interests enables a novel and natural interaction modality that can
possibly be used to interact with new generation devices (e.g. smart phones,
Google Glass, living room devices). We demonstrate our system on a large number
of real-world images with varying complexity. To help understand the tradeoffs
compared to traditional mouse based interactions, results are reported for both

Multimodal Grounding for Language Processing
This survey discusses how recent developments in multimodal processing
facilitate conceptual grounding of language. We categorize the information flow
in multimodal processing with respect to cognitive models of human information
processing and analyze different methods for combining multimodal
representations. Based on this methodological inventory, we discuss the benefit
of multimodal grounding for a variety of language processing tasks and the
challenges that arise. We particularly focus on multimodal grounding of verbs
