Fir filter design for area efficient implementation /
In this dissertation, a variable precision algorithm based on sensitivity analysis is proposed for reducing the wordlength of the coefficients and/or the number of nonzero bits of the coefficients to reduce the complexity required in the implementation. Further space savings is possible if the proposed algorithm is associated with our optimal structures and derived scaling algorithm. We also propose a structure to synthesize FIR filters using the improved prefilter equalizer structure with arbitrary bandwidth, and our proposed filter structure reduces the area required. Our improved design is targeted at improving the prefilters based on interpolated FIR filter and frequency masking design and aims to provide a sharp transition-band as well as increasing the stopband attenuation. We use an equalizer designed to compensate the prefilter performance. In this dissertation, we propose a systematic procedure for designing FIR filters implementations. Our method yields a good design with low coefficient sensitivity and small order while satisfying design specifications. The resulting hardware implementation is suitable for use in custom hardware such as VLSI and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs).FIR filters are preferred for many Digital Signal Processing applications as they have several advantages over IIR filters such as the possibility of exact linear phase, shorter required wordlength and guaranteed stability. However, FIR filter applications impose several challenges on the implementations of the systems, especially in demanding considerably more arithmetic operations and hardware components. This dissertation focuses on the design and implementation of FIR filters in hardware to reduce the space required without loss of performance
On the Polyphase Decomposition for Design of Generalized Comb Decimation Filters
Generalized comb filters (GCFs) are efficient anti-aliasing decimation
filters with improved selectivity and quantization noise (QN) rejection
performance around the so called folding bands with respect to classical comb
filters.
In this paper, we address the design of GCF filters by proposing an efficient
partial polyphase architecture with the aim to reduce the data rate as much as
possible after the Sigma-Delta A/D conversion. We propose a mathematical
framework in order to completely characterize the dependence of the frequency
response of GCFs on the quantization of the multipliers embedded in the
proposed filter architecture. This analysis paves the way to the design of
multiplier-less decimation architectures.
We also derive the impulse response of a sample 3rd order GCF filter used as
a reference scheme throughout the paper.Comment: Submitted to IEEE TCAS-I, February 2007; 11 double-column pages, 9

Designing Multi-User MIMO for Energy Efficiency: When is Massive MIMO the Answer?
Assume that a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication
system must be designed to cover a given area with maximal energy efficiency
(bit/Joule). What are the optimal values for the number of antennas, active
users, and transmit power? By using a new model that describes how these three
parameters affect the total energy efficiency of the system, this work provides
closed-form expressions for their optimal values and interactions. In sharp
contrast to common belief, the transmit power is found to increase (not
decrease) with the number of antennas. This implies that energy efficient
systems can operate at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes in which the
use of interference-suppressing precoding schemes is essential. Numerical
results show that the maximal energy efficiency is achieved by a massive MIMO
setup wherein hundreds of antennas are deployed to serve relatively many users
using interference-suppressing regularized zero-forcing precoding.Comment: Published at IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference

Theory and design of M-channel maximally decimated quadrature mirror filters with arbitrary M, having the perfect-reconstruction property
Based on the concept of losslessness in digital filter structures, this paper derives a general class of maximally decimated M-channel quadrature mirror filter banks that lead to perfect reconstruction. The perfect-reconstruction property guarantees that the reconstructed signalhat{x} (n)is a delayed version of the input signal x (n), i.e.,hat{x} (n) = x (n - n_{0}). It is shown that such a property can be satisfied if the alias component matrix (AC matrix for short) is unitary on the unit circle of the z plane. The number of channels M is arbitrary, and when M is two, the results reduce to certain recently reported 2-channel perfect-reconstruction QMF structures. A procedure, based on recently reported FIR cascaded-lattice structures, is presented for optimal design of such FIR M-channel filter banks. Design examples are included
FIR Digital Filter and Neural Network Design using Harmony Search Algorithm
Harmony Search (HS) is an emerging metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the improvisation process of jazz musicians. In the HS algorithm, each musician (= decision variable) plays (= generates) a note (= a value) for finding the best harmony (= global optimum) all together. This algorithm has been employed to cope with numerous tasks in the past decade. In this thesis, HS algorithm has been applied to design digital filters of orders 24 and 48 as well as the parameters of neural network problems. Both multiobjective and single objective optimization techniques were applied to design FIR digital filters. 2-dimensional digital filters can be used for image processing and neural networks can be used for medical image diagnosis. Digital filter design using Harmony Search Algorithm can achieve results close to Parks McClellan Algorithm which shows that the algorithm is capable of solving complex engineering problems. Harmony Search is able to optimize the parameter values of feedforward network problems and fuzzy inference neural networks. The performance of a designed neural network was tested by introducing various noise levels at the testing inputs and the output of the neural networks with noise was compared to that without noise. It was observed that, even if noise is being introduced to the testing input there was not much difference in the output. Design results were obtained within a reasonable amount of time using Harmony Search Algorithm
Realization of Analog Wavelet Filter using Hybrid Genetic Algorithm for On-line Epileptic Event Detection

To prolong the battery lifetime, analog wavelet filter is used for epileptic event detection in WAEEG system to achieve on-line data reduction. For mapping continuous wavelet transform to analog filter implementation with low-power consumption and high approximation accuracy, this paper proposes a novel approximation method to construct the wavelet base in analog domain, in which the approximation process in frequency domain is considered as an optimization problem by building a mathematical model with only one term in the numerator. The hybrid genetic algorithm consisting of genetic algorithm and quasi-Newton method is employed to find the globally optimum solution, taking required stability into account. Experiment results show that the proposed method can give a stable analog wavelet base with simple structure and higher approximation accuracy compared with existing method, leading to a better spike detection accuracy. The fourth-order Marr wavelet filter is designed as an example using Gm-C filter structure based on LC ladder simulation, whose power consumption is only 33.4 pW at 2.1Hz. Simulation results show that the design method can be used to facilitate low power and small volume implementation of on-line epileptic event detector.Peer reviewe
