Collaborative Filtering via Group-Structured Dictionary Learning
Structured sparse coding and the related structured dictionary learning
problems are novel research areas in machine learning. In this paper we present
a new application of structured dictionary learning for collaborative filtering
based recommender systems. Our extensive numerical experiments demonstrate that
the presented technique outperforms its state-of-the-art competitors and has
several advantages over approaches that do not put structured constraints on
the dictionary elements.Comment: A compressed version of the paper has been accepted for publication

Trust-Networks in Recommender Systems
Similarity-based recommender systems suffer from significant limitations, such as data sparseness and scalability. The goal of this research is to improve recommender systems by incorporating the social concepts of trust and reputation. By introducing a trust model we can improve the quality and accuracy of the recommended items. Three trust-based recommendation strategies are presented and evaluated against the popular MovieLens [8] dataset
Including Item Characteristics in the Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis Model for Collaborative Filtering
We propose a new hybrid recommender system that combines some advantages of collaborative and content-based recommender systems. While it uses ratings data of all users, as do collaborative recommender systems, it is also able to recommend new items and provide an explanation of its recommendations, as do content-based systems. Our approach is based on the idea that there are communities of users that find the same characteristics important to like or dislike a product. This model is an extension of the probabilistic latent semantic model for collaborative filtering with ideas based on clusterwise linear regression. On a movie data set, we show that the model is competitive to other recommenders and can be used to explain the recommendations to the users.algorithms;probabilistic latent semantic analysis;hybrid recommender systems;recommender systems
