    Wavelet techniques for reversible data embedding into images

    The proliferation of digital information in our society has enticed a lot of research into data embedding techniques that add information to digital content like images, audio and video. This additional information can be used for various purposes and different applications place different requirements on the embedding techniques. In this paper, we investigate high capacity lossless data embedding methods that allow one to embed large amounts of data into digital images (or video) in such a way that the original image can be reconstructed from the watermarked image. The paper starts by briefly reviewing three existing lossless data embedding techniques as described by Fridrich and co-authors, by Tian, and by Celik and co-workers. We then present two new techniques: one based on least significant bit prediction and Sweldens' lifting scheme and another that is an improvement of Tian's technique of difference expansion. The various embedding methods are then compared in terms of capacity-distortion behaviour, embedding speed, and capacity control

    Data compression techniques applied to high resolution high frame rate video technology

    An investigation is presented of video data compression applied to microgravity space experiments using High Resolution High Frame Rate Video Technology (HHVT). An extensive survey of methods of video data compression, described in the open literature, was conducted. The survey examines compression methods employing digital computing. The results of the survey are presented. They include a description of each method and assessment of image degradation and video data parameters. An assessment is made of present and near term future technology for implementation of video data compression in high speed imaging system. Results of the assessment are discussed and summarized. The results of a study of a baseline HHVT video system, and approaches for implementation of video data compression, are presented. Case studies of three microgravity experiments are presented and specific compression techniques and implementations are recommended

    Difference-expansion based reversible data hiding and its steganalysis

    A novel reversible data embedding method was reported in a recent IEEE journal article. The method was based on difference expansion (DE) technique. It used redundancy in digital images to achieve a high embedding capacity, while keeping visual distortion of the stego-image low. In this thesis, this technique was studied and experimentally evaluated. An effective steganalysis scheme for this DE-based reversible data embedding method was proposed, which used 12-dimensional feature vectors and a Bayes Classifier. The proposed steganalysis scheme steadily achieved a correct classification rate of 99%

    ROI Based Quality Access Control of Compressed Color Image using DWT via Lifting

    Region-of-Interest (ROI) in an image or video signal contains important information and may be used for access control at various qualities using multiresolution analysis (MRA). This paper proposes a novel quality access control method of compressed color image by modulating the coefficients of ROI at various levels. Data modulation causes visual degradation in the original image and plays the key role in access control through reversible process. The modulation information, in the form of a secret key, is embedded in non-ROI part of the chrominance blue (Cb) channel of the color image using quantization index modulation (QIM). Lifting based DWT, rather than conventional DWT, is used to decompose the original image in order to achieve two-fold advantages, namely (1) better flexibility and low loss in image quality due to QIM and (2) better decoding reliability that leads to better access control. Only the authorized users having the full knowledge of the secret key restore the full quality of ROI. Simulation results duly support this claims

    Wavelet Based Image Coding Schemes : A Recent Survey

    A variety of new and powerful algorithms have been developed for image compression over the years. Among them the wavelet-based image compression schemes have gained much popularity due to their overlapping nature which reduces the blocking artifacts that are common phenomena in JPEG compression and multiresolution character which leads to superior energy compaction with high quality reconstructed images. This paper provides a detailed survey on some of the popular wavelet coding techniques such as the Embedded Zerotree Wavelet (EZW) coding, Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Tree (SPIHT) coding, the Set Partitioned Embedded Block (SPECK) Coder, and the Embedded Block Coding with Optimized Truncation (EBCOT) algorithm. Other wavelet-based coding techniques like the Wavelet Difference Reduction (WDR) and the Adaptive Scanned Wavelet Difference Reduction (ASWDR) algorithms, the Space Frequency Quantization (SFQ) algorithm, the Embedded Predictive Wavelet Image Coder (EPWIC), Compression with Reversible Embedded Wavelet (CREW), the Stack-Run (SR) coding and the recent Geometric Wavelet (GW) coding are also discussed.     Problem-based learning (PBL) awareness among academic staff in Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM)

    The present study was conducted to determine whether the academic staff in UTHM was aware of Problem-based Learning (PBL) as an instructional approach. It was significant to identify if the academic staff in Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) had the knowledge about PBL. It was also crucial to know if the academic staff was aware of PBL as a method of teaching their courses in class as this could give the feedback to the university on the use of PBL among academic staff and measures to be taken to help improve their teaching experience. A workshop could also be designed if the academic staff in UTHM was interested to know more about PBL and how it could be used in their classroom. The objective of this study was to identify the awareness of PBL among academic staff in UTHM. This study was conducted via a quantitative method using a questionnaire adapted from the Awareness Questionnaire (AQ). 100 respondents were involved in this study. The findings indicated that the awareness of PBL among UTHM academic staff was moderate. It is a hope that more exposure could be done as PBL is seen as a promising approach in the learning process. In conclusion, the academic staff in UTHM has a moderate level of knowledge about PBL as a teaching methodology
