    Delay-Constrained Multicast Routing Algorithm Based on Average Distance Heuristic

    Multicast is the ability of a communication network to accept a single message from an application and to deliver copies of the message to multiple recipients at different location. With the development of Internet, Multicast is widely applied in all kinds of multimedia real-time application: distributed multimedia systems, collaborative computing, video-conferencing, distance education, etc. In order to construct a delay-constrained multicast routing tree, average distance heuristic (ADH) algorithm is analyzed firstly. Then a delay-constrained algorithm called DCADH (delay-constrained average distance heuristic) is presented. By using ADH a least cost multicast routing tree can be constructed; if the path delay can't meet the delay upper bound, a shortest delay path which is computed by Dijkstra algorithm will be merged into the existing multicast routing tree to meet the delay upper bound. Simulation experiments show that DCADH has a good performance in achieving a low-cost multicast routing tree.Comment: 8 Pages, IJCNC Journal 201

    DHRL-FNMR: An Intelligent Multicast Routing Approach Based on Deep Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning in SDN

    The optimal multicast tree problem in the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) multicast routing is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem. Although existing SDN intelligent solution methods, which are based on deep reinforcement learning, can dynamically adapt to complex network link state changes, these methods are plagued by problems such as redundant branches, large action space, and slow agent convergence. In this paper, an SDN intelligent multicast routing algorithm based on deep hierarchical reinforcement learning is proposed to circumvent the aforementioned problems. First, the multicast tree construction problem is decomposed into two sub-problems: the fork node selection problem and the construction of the optimal path from the fork node to the destination node. Second, based on the information characteristics of SDN global network perception, the multicast tree state matrix, link bandwidth matrix, link delay matrix, link packet loss rate matrix, and sub-goal matrix are designed as the state space of intrinsic and meta controllers. Then, in order to mitigate the excessive action space, our approach constructs different action spaces at the upper and lower levels. The meta-controller generates an action space using network nodes to select the fork node, and the intrinsic controller uses the adjacent edges of the current node as its action space, thus implementing four different action selection strategies in the construction of the multicast tree. To facilitate the intelligent agent in constructing the optimal multicast tree with greater speed, we developed alternative reward strategies that distinguish between single-step node actions and multi-step actions towards multiple destination nodes

    Analog layout design automation: ILP-based analog routers

    The shrinking design window and high parasitic sensitivity in the advanced technology have imposed special challenges on the analog and radio frequency (RF) integrated circuit design. In this thesis, we propose a new methodology to address such a deficiency based on integer linear programming (ILP) but without compromising the capability of handling any special constraints for the analog routing problems. Distinct from the conventional methods, our algorithm utilizes adaptive resolutions for various routing regions. For a more congested region, a routing grid with higher resolution is employed, whereas a lower-resolution grid is adopted to a less crowded routing region. Moreover, we strengthen its speciality in handling interconnect width control so as to route the electrical nets based on analog constraints while considering proper interconnect width to address the acute interconnect parasitics, mismatch minimization, and electromigration effects simultaneously. In addition, to tackle the performance degradation due to layout dependent effects (LDEs) and take advantage of optical proximity correction (OPC) for resolution enhancement of subwavelength lithography, in this thesis we have also proposed an innovative LDE-aware analog layout migration scheme, which is equipped with our special routing methodology. The LDE constraints are first identified with aid of a special sensitivity analysis and then satisfied during the layout migration process. Afterwards the electrical nets are routed by an extended OPC-inclusive ILP-based analog router to improve the final layout image fidelity while the routability and analog constraints are respected in the meantime. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed methods in terms of both circuit performance and image quality compared to the previous works

    Near-capacity fixed-rate and rateless channel code constructions

    Fixed-rate and rateless channel code constructions are designed for satisfying conflicting design tradeoffs, leading to codes that benefit from practical implementations, whilst offering a good bit error ratio (BER) and block error ratio (BLER) performance. More explicitly, two novel low-density parity-check code (LDPC) constructions are proposed; the first construction constitutes a family of quasi-cyclic protograph LDPC codes, which has a Vandermonde-like parity-check matrix (PCM). The second construction constitutes a specific class of protograph LDPC codes, which are termed as multilevel structured (MLS) LDPC codes. These codes possess a PCM construction that allows the coexistence of both pseudo-randomness as well as a structure requiring a reduced memory. More importantly, it is also demonstrated that these benefits accrue without any compromise in the attainable BER/BLER performance. We also present the novel concept of separating multiple users by means of user-specific channel codes, which is referred to as channel code division multiple access (CCDMA), and provide an example based on MLS LDPC codes. In particular, we circumvent the difficulty of having potentially high memory requirements, while ensuring that each user’s bits in the CCDMA system are equally protected. With regards to rateless channel coding, we propose a novel family of codes, which we refer to as reconfigurable rateless codes, that are capable of not only varying their code-rate but also to adaptively modify their encoding/decoding strategy according to the near-instantaneous channel conditions. We demonstrate that the proposed reconfigurable rateless codes are capable of shaping their own degree distribution according to the nearinstantaneous requirements imposed by the channel, but without any explicit channel knowledge at the transmitter. Additionally, a generalised transmit preprocessing aided closed-loop downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is presented, in which both the channel coding components as well as the linear transmit precoder exploit the knowledge of the channel state information (CSI). More explicitly, we embed a rateless code in a MIMO transmit preprocessing scheme, in order to attain near-capacity performance across a wide range of channel signal-to-ratios (SNRs), rather than only at a specific SNR. The performance of our scheme is further enhanced with the aid of a technique, referred to as pilot symbol assisted rateless (PSAR) coding, whereby a predetermined fraction of pilot bits is appropriately interspersed with the original information bits at the channel coding stage, instead of multiplexing pilots at the modulation stage, as in classic pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM). We subsequently demonstrate that the PSAR code-aided transmit preprocessing scheme succeeds in gleaning more information from the inserted pilots than the classic PSAM technique, because the pilot bits are not only useful for sounding the channel at the receiver but also beneficial for significantly reducing the computational complexity of the rateless channel decoder

    GMPLS-OBS interoperability and routing acalability in internet

    The popularization of Internet has turned the telecom world upside down over the last two decades. Network operators, vendors and service providers are being challenged to adapt themselves to Internet requirements in a way to properly serve the huge number of demanding users (residential and business). The Internet (data-oriented network) is supported by an IP packet-switched architecture on top of a circuit-switched, optical-based architecture (voice-oriented network), which results in a complex and rather costly infrastructure to the transport of IP traffic (the dominant traffic nowadays). In such a way, a simple and IP-adapted network architecture is desired. From the transport network perspective, both Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) and Optical Burst Switching (OBS) technologies are part of the set of solutions to progress towards an IP-over-WDM architecture, providing intelligence in the control and management of resources (i.e. GMPLS) as well as a good network resource access and usage (i.e. OBS). The GMPLS framework is the key enabler to orchestrate a unified optical network control and thus reduce network operational expenses (OPEX), while increasing operator's revenues. Simultaneously, the OBS technology is one of the well positioned switching technologies to realize the envisioned IP-over-WDM network architecture, leveraging on the statistical multiplexing of data plane resources to enable sub-wavelength in optical networks. Despite of the GMPLS principle of unified control, little effort has been put on extending it to incorporate the OBS technology and many open questions still remain. From the IP network perspective, the Internet is facing scalability issues as enormous quantities of service instances and devices must be managed. Nowadays, it is believed that the current Internet features and mechanisms cannot cope with the size and dynamics of the Future Internet. Compact Routing is one of the main breakthrough paradigms on the design of a routing system scalable with the Future Internet requirements. It intends to address the fundamental limits of current stretch-1 shortest-path routing in terms of RT scalability (aiming at sub-linear growth). Although "static" compact routing works fine, scaling logarithmically on the number of nodes even in scale-free graphs such as Internet, it does not handle dynamic graphs. Moreover, as multimedia content/services proliferate, the multicast is again under the spotlight as bandwidth efficiency and low RT sizes are desired. However, it makes the problem even worse as more routing entries should be maintained. In a nutshell, the main objective of this thesis in to contribute with fully detailed solutions dealing both with i) GMPLS-OBS control interoperability (Part I), fostering unified control over multiple switching domains and reduce redundancy in IP transport. The proposed solution overcomes every interoperability technology-specific issue as well as it offers (absolute) QoS guarantees overcoming OBS performance issues by making use of the GMPLS traffic-engineering (TE) features. Keys extensions to the GMPLS protocol standards are equally approached; and ii) new compact routing scheme for multicast scenarios, in order to overcome the Future Internet inter-domain routing system scalability problem (Part II). In such a way, the first known name-independent (i.e. topology unaware) compact multicast routing algorithm is proposed. On the other hand, the AnyTraffic Labeled concept is also introduced saving on forwarding entries by sharing a single forwarding entry to unicast and multicast traffic type. Exhaustive simulation campaigns are run in both cases in order to assess the reliability and feasible of the proposals

    Efficient Mission Planning for Robot Networks in Communication Constrained Environments

    Many robotic systems are remotely operated nowadays that require uninterrupted connection and safe mission planning. Such systems are commonly found in military drones, search and rescue operations, mining robotics, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. Different robotic systems may employ disparate communication modalities such as radio network, visible light communication, satellite, infrared, Wi-Fi. However, in an autonomous mission where the robots are expected to be interconnected, communication constrained environment frequently arises due to the out of range problem or unavailability of the signal. Furthermore, several automated projects (building construction, assembly line) do not guarantee uninterrupted communication, and a safe project plan is required that optimizes collision risks, cost, and duration. In this thesis, we propose four pronged approaches to alleviate some of these issues: 1) Communication aware world mapping; 2) Communication preserving using the Line-of-Sight (LoS); 3) Communication aware safe planning; and 4) Multi-Objective motion planning for navigation. First, we focus on developing a communication aware world map that integrates traditional world models with the planning of multi-robot placement. Our proposed communication map selects the optimal placement of a chain of intermediate relay vehicles in order to maximize communication quality to a remote unit. We also vi propose an algorithm to build a min-Arborescence tree when there are multiple remote units to be served. Second, in communication denied environments, we use Line-of-Sight (LoS) to establish communication between mobile robots, control their movements and relay information to other autonomous units. We formulate and study the complexity of a multi-robot relay network positioning problem and propose approximation algorithms that restore visibility based connectivity through the relocation of one or more robots. Third, we develop a framework to quantify the safety score of a fully automated robotic mission where the coexistence of human and robot may pose a collision risk. A number of alternate mission plans are analyzed using motion planning algorithms to select the safest one. Finally, an efficient multi-objective optimization based path planning for the robots is developed to deal with several Pareto optimal cost attributes

    Efficient Algorithms for Coordinated Motion in Shared Spaces

    The steady development of autonomous systems motivates a number of interesting algorithmic problems. These systems, such as self-driving cars, must contend with far more complex and dynamic environments than factory floor robots of the past. This dissertation seeks to identify optimization problems that are simple enough to analyze formally, yet realistic enough to contribute to the eventual design of systems extant in real-world, physical spaces. With that in mind, this work examines three problems in particular: automated vehicles and unregulated traffic crossings, a smart network for city-wide traffic flow, and an online organizational scheme for automated warehouses. First, the Traffic Crossing Problem is introduced, in which a set of n axis-aligned vehicles moving monotonically in the plane must reach their goal positions within a time limit and subject to a maximum speed limit. It is shown that this problem is NP-complete and efficient algorithms for two special cases are given. Next, motivated by a problem of computing a periodic schedule for traffic lights in an urban transportation network, the problem of Circulation with Modular Demands is introduced. A novel variant of the well-known minimum-cost circulation problem in directed networks, in this problem vertex demand values are taken from the integers modulo λ, for some integer λ≥2. This modular circulation problem is solvable in polynomial time when λ=2, but the problem is NP-hard when λ≥3. For this case, a polynomial time approximation algorithm is provided. Finally, a theoretical model for organizing portable storage units in a warehouse subject to an online sequence of access requests is proposed. Complicated by the unknown request frequencies of stored products, the warehouse must be arranged with care. Analogous to virtual-memory systems, the more popular and oft-requested an item is, the more efficient its retrieval should be. Two formulations are considered, dependent on the number of access points to which storage units must be brought, and algorithms that are O(1)-competitive with respect to an optimal algorithm are given.
