    Get PDF
For decades, researchers have investigated how to recognize facial images. This study reviews the development of different face recognition (FR) methods, namely, holistic learning, handcrafted local feature learning, shallow learning, and deep learning (DL). With the development of methods, the accuracy of recognizing faces in the labeled faces in the wild (LFW) database has been increased. The accuracy of holistic learning is 60%, that of handcrafted local feature learning increases to 70%, and that of shallow learning is 86%. Finally, DL achieves human-level performance (97% accuracy). This enhanced accuracy is caused by large datasets and graphics processing units (GPUs) with massively parallel processing capabilities. Furthermore, FR challenges and current research studies are discussed to understand future research directions. The results of this study show that presently the database of labeled faces in the wild has reached 99.85% accuracy

The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between texture features of Di raction Enhanced Imaging (DEI) images and trabecular properties of human wrist bone in the assessment of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disorder that is characterized by reduced bone mass and a deterioration of bone structure which results in an increased fracture risk. Since the disease is preventable, diagnostic techniques are of major importance. Bone micro-architecture and Bone mineral density (BMD) are two main factors related to osteoporotic fractures. Trabecular properties like bone volume (BV), trabecular number (Tb.N), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), bone surface (BS), and other properties of bone, characterizes the bone architecture. Currently, however, BMD is the only measurement carried out to assess osteoporosis. Researchers suggest that bone micro-architecture and texture analysis of bone images along with BMD can provide more accuracy in the assessment. We have applied texture analysis on DEI images and extracted texture features. In our study, we used fractal analysis, gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), texture feature coding method (TFCM), and local binary patterns (LBP) as texture analysis methods to extract texture features. 3D Micro-CT trabecular properties were extracted using SkyScanTM CTAN software. Then, we determined the correlation between texture features and trabecular properties. GLCM energy fea- ture of DEI images explained more than 39% of variance in bone surface by volume ratio (BS/BV), 38% of variance in percent bone volume (BV/TV), and 37% of variance in trabecular number (Tb.N). TFCM homogeneity feature of DEI images explained more than 42% of variance in bone surface (BS) parameter. LBP operator - LBP 11 of DEI images explained more than 34% of vari- ance in bone surface (BS) and 30% of variance in bone surface density (BS/TV). Fractal dimension parameter of DEI images explained more than 47% of variance in bone surface (BS) and 32% of variance in bone volume (BV). This study will facilitate in the quanti cation of osteoporosis beyond conventional BMD

A crucial step in designing intelligent transport systems (ITS) is vehicle detection. The challenges of vehicle detection in urban roads arise because of camera position, background variations, occlusion, multiple foreground objects as well as vehicle pose. The current study provides a synopsis of state-of-the-art vehicle detection techniques, which are categorized according to motion and appearance-based techniques starting with frame differencing and background subtraction until feature extraction, a more complicated model in comparison. The advantages and disadvantages among the techniques are also highlighted with a conclusion as to the most accurate one for vehicle detection

In digital pathology, analysis of histopathological images is mainly time-consuming manual labor and prone to subjectivity. Automated image analysis provides methods to analyse these images in a quantitative, objective, and efficient way. The aim of this thesis study was to implement an image analysis pipeline to analyse histological images and quantitatively characterise tissue histology. To achieve this, a feature extraction library was implemented that utilises feature engineering and convolutional neural network to extract quantitative characteristics from histological images. Machine learning with supervised learning was then applied to train multiple discriminative models based on the quantitative histological characteristics. The performance of the implemented system was evaluated in detection of breast cancer metastases in whole slide images (WSI) of lymph node sections. Three logistic regression models and a convolutional neural network were trained to separate metastatic tissue from normal tissue. Each model was able to detect the metastases with high accuracy (AUC = 0.89–0.97). The results show that the implemented image analysis system provides an accurate detection of hot-spot regions in WSIs. These image analysis tools can be directly integrated into a software that can reduce the workload of pathologists by providing tools for quantification of tissue histology

Recognizing Emotions Conveyed through Facial Expressions

Emotional communication is a key element of habilitation care of persons with dementia. It is, therefore, highly preferable for assistive robots that are used to supplement human care provided to persons with dementia, to possess the ability to recognize and respond to emotions expressed by those who are being cared-for. Facial expressions are one of the key modalities through which emotions are conveyed. This work focuses on computer vision-based recognition of facial expressions of emotions conveyed by the elderly. Although there has been much work on automatic facial expression recognition, the algorithms have been experimentally validated primarily on young faces. The facial expressions on older faces has been totally excluded. This is due to the fact that the facial expression databases that were available and that have been used in facial expression recognition research so far do not contain images of facial expressions of people above the age of 65 years. To overcome this problem, we adopt a recently published database, namely, the FACES database, which was developed to address exactly the same problem in the area of human behavioural research. The FACES database contains 2052 images of six different facial expressions, with almost identical and systematic representation of the young, middle-aged and older age-groups. In this work, we evaluate and compare the performance of two of the existing imagebased approaches for facial expression recognition, over a broad spectrum of age ranging from 19 to 80 years. The evaluated systems use Gabor filters and uniform local binary patterns (LBP) for feature extraction, and AdaBoost.MH with multi-threshold stump learner for expression classification. We have experimentally validated the hypotheses that facial expression recognition systems trained only on young faces perform poorly on middle-aged and older faces, and that such systems confuse ageing-related facial features on neutral faces with other expressions of emotions. We also identified that, among the three age-groups, the middle-aged group provides the best generalization performance across the entire age spectrum. The performance of the systems was also compared to the performance of humans in recognizing facial expressions of emotions. Some similarities were observed, such as, difficulty in recognizing the expressions on older faces, and difficulty in recognizing the expression of sadness. The findings of our work establish the need for developing approaches for facial expression recognition that are robust to the effects of ageing on the face. The scientific results of our work can be used as a basis to guide future research in this direction

Energy-efficient information inference in wireless sensor networks based on graphical modeling

This dissertation proposes a systematic approach, based on a probabilistic graphical model, to infer missing observations in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for sustaining environmental monitoring. This enables us to effectively address two critical challenges in WSNs: (1) energy-efficient data gathering through planned communication disruptions resulting from energy-saving sleep cycles, and (2) sensor-node failure tolerance in harsh environments. In our approach, we develop a pairwise Markov Random Field (MRF) to model the spatial correlations in a sensor network. Our MRF model is first constructed through automatic learning from historical sensed data, by using Iterative Proportional Fitting (IPF). When the MRF model is constructed, Loopy Belief Propagation (LBP) is then employed to perform information inference to estimate the missing data given incomplete network observations. The proposed approach is then improved in terms of energy-efficiency and robustness from three aspects: model building, inference and parameter learning. The model and methods are empirically evaluated using multiple real-world sensor network data sets. The results demonstrate the merits of our proposed approaches

Robust steganographic techniques for secure biometric-based remote authentication

Biometrics are widely accepted as the most reliable proof of identity, entitlement to services, and for crime-related forensics. Using biometrics for remote authentication is becoming an essential requirement for the development of knowledge-based economy in the digital age. Ensuring security and integrity of the biometric data or templates is critical to the success of deployment especially because once the data compromised the whole authentication system is compromised with serious consequences for identity theft, fraud as well as loss of privacy. Protecting biometric data whether stored in databases or transmitted over an open network channel is a serious challenge and cryptography may not be the answer. The main premise of this thesis is that Digital Steganography can provide an alternative security solutions that can be exploited to deal with the biometric transmission problem. The main objective of the thesis is to design, develop and test steganographic tools to support remote biometric authentication. We focus on investigating the selection of biometrics feature representations suitable for hiding in natural cover images and designing steganography systems that are specific for hiding such biometric data rather than being suitable for general purpose. The embedding schemes are expected to have high security characteristics resistant to several types of steganalysis tools and maintain accuracy of recognition post embedding. We shall limit our investigations to embedding face biometrics, but the same challenges and approaches should help in developing similar embedding schemes for other biometrics. To achieve this our investigations and proposals are done in different directions which explain in the rest of this section. Reviewing the literature on the state-of-art in steganography has revealed a rich source of theoretical work and creative approaches that have helped generate a variety of embedding schemes as well as steganalysis tools but almost all focused on embedding random looking secrets. The review greatly helped in identifying the main challenges in the field and the main criteria for success in terms of difficult to reconcile requirements on embedding capacity, efficiency of embedding, robustness against steganalysis attacks, and stego image quality. On the biometrics front the review revealed another rich source of different face biometric feature vectors. The review helped shaping our primary objectives as (1) identifying a binarised face feature factor with high discriminating power that is susceptible to embedding in images, (2) develop a special purpose content-based steganography schemes that can benefit from the well-defined structure of the face biometric data in the embedding procedure while preserving accuracy without leaking information about the source biometric data, and (3) conduct sufficient sets of experiments to test the performance of the developed schemes, highlight the advantages as well as limitations, if any, of the developed system with regards to the above mentioned criteria. We argue that the well-known LBP histogram face biometric scheme satisfies the desired properties and we demonstrate that our new more efficient wavelet based versions called LBPH patterns is much more compact and has improved accuracy. In fact the wavelet version schemes reduce the number of features by 22% to 72% of the original version of LBP scheme guaranteeing better invisibility post embedding. We shall then develop 2 steganographic schemes. The first is the LSB-witness is a general purpose scheme that avoids changing the LSB-plane guaranteeing robustness against targeted steganalysis tools, but establish the viability of using steganography for remote biometric-based recognition. However, it may modify the 2nd LSB of cover pixels as a witness for the presence of the secret bits in the 1st LSB and thereby has some disadvantages with regards to the stego image quality. Our search for a new scheme that exploits the structure of the secret face LBPH patterns for improved stego image quality has led to the development of the first content-based steganography scheme. Embedding is guided by searching for similarities between the LBPH patterns and the structure of the cover image LSB bit-planes partitioned into 8-bit or 4-bit patterns. We shall demonstrate the excellent benefits of using content-based embedding scheme in terms of improved stego image quality, greatly reduced payload, reduced lower bound on optimal embedding efficiency, robustness against all targeted steganalysis tools. Unfortunately our scheme was not robust against the blind or universal SRM steganalysis tool. However we demonstrated robustness against SRM at low payload when our scheme was modified by restricting embedding to edge and textured pixels. The low payload in this case is sufficient to embed a secret full face LBPH patterns. Our work opens new exciting opportunities to build successful real applications of content-based steganography and presents plenty of research challenges
