    Frequency Diversity for Improving Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging

    In this work, a novel theoretical framework is presented for using recent advances in frequency diversity arrays (FDAs). Unlike a conventional array, the FDA simultaneously transmits a unique frequency from each element in the array. As a result, special time and space properties of the radiation pattern are exploited to improve cross-range resolution. The idealized FDA radiation pattern is compared with and validated against a full-wave electromagnetic solver, and it is shown that the conventional array is a special case of the FDA. A new signal model, based on the FDA, is used to simulate SAR imagery of ideal point mass targets and the new model is used to derive the impulse response function of the SAR system, which is rarely achievable with other analytic methods. This work also presents an innovative solution for using the convolution back-projection algorithm, the gold standard in SAR image processing, and is a significant advantage of the proposed FDA model. The new FDA model and novel SAR system concept of operation are shown to reduce collection time by 33 percent while achieving a 4.5 dB improvement in cross-range resolution as compared to traditional imaging systems

    Doppler Aliasing Reduction in Wide-Angle Synthetic Aperture Radar Using a Linear Frequency Modulated Random Stepped-Frequency Waveform

    This research examines the theory, application, and results of using Random Stepped-Frequency (RSF) waveforms to mitigate Doppler aliasing in a wide-angle Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging scenario. Severe Doppler aliasing typically occurs in this scenario since range extent requirements force the pulse repetition frequency to a value violating the lower bound for Doppler aliasing. Building on previous research, this work expands upon RSF waveform analysis using a Linear Frequency Modulated RSF (LFM-RSF) waveform. The RSF waveform suppresses Doppler aliasing by positioning nulls at the aliased scatterer location. Applying LFM with RSF processing theoretically provides greater frequency coverage and aliased scatterer cancellation improvement when compared to fixed frequency values. Results using the LFM-RSF waveform show images with alias mitigation performance consistent with previous non-LFM RSF results. Given a 45 dB image dynamic range and satisfying a time-bandwidth product criterion, the LFM-RSF waveform produces an image with aliased energy reduced by 99.6%. Slightly more energy reduction is possible by violating the time-bandwidth product criterion with an associated frequency overlap between subpulses. This violation leads to additional frequency coverage which enhances aliased energy reduction to 99.9%

    Monostatic Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar Using Commercial WiMAX Transceivers In the License-exempt Spectrum

    The past half-century witnessed an evolution of synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Boosted by digital signal processing (DSP), a variety of SAR imaging algorithms have been developed, in which the wavenumber domain algorithm is mature for airborne SAR and independent of signal waveforms. Apart from the algorithm development, there is a growing interest in how to acquire the raw data of targets’ echoes before the DSP for SAR imaging in a cost-effective way. For the data acquisition, various studies over the past 15 years have shed light on utilizing the signal generated from the ubiquitous broadband wireless technology – orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). However, the purpose of this thesis is to enable commercial OFDM-based wireless systems to work as an airborne SAR sensor. The unlicensed devices of Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) are the first option, owing to their accessibility, similarity and economy. This dissertation first demonstrates the feasibility of applying WiMAX to SAR by discussing their similar features. Despite the similarities they share, the compatibility of the two technologies is undermined by a series of problems resulted from WiMAX transceiver mechanisms and industrial rules for radiated power. In order to directly apply commercial WiMAX base station transceivers in unlicensed band to airborne SAR application, we propose a radio-frequency (RF) front design together with a signal processing means. To be specific, a double-pole, double-throw (DPDT) switch is inserted between an antenna and two WiMAX transceivers for generating pulsed signal. By simulations, the transmitted power of the SAR sensor is lower than 0dBm, while its imaging range can be over 10km for targets with relatively large radar cross section (RCS), such as a ship. Its range resolution is 9.6m whereas its cross-range resolution is finer than 1m. Equipped with the multi-mode, this SAR sensor is further enhanced to satisfy the requirements of diversified SAR applications. For example, the width of the scan-mode SAR’s range swath is 2.1km, over five times the width of other modes. Vital developed Matlab code is given in Appendix D, and its correctness is shown by comparing with the image of chirped SAR. To summarize, the significance of this dissertation is to propose, for the first time, a design of directly leveraging commercial OFDM-based systems for airborne SAR imaging. Compared with existing designs of airborne SAR, it is a promising low-cost solution

    Wide-Angle Multistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar: Focused Image Formation and Aliasing Artifact Mitigation

    Traditional monostatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) platforms force the user to choose between two image types: larger, low resolution images or smaller, high resolution images. Switching to a Wide-Angle Multistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (WAM-SAR) approach allows formation of large high-resolution images. Unfortunately, WAM-SAR suffers from two significant implementation problems. First, wavefront curvature effects, non-linear flight paths, and warped ground planes lead to image defocusing with traditional SAR processing methods. A new 3-D monostatic/bistatic image formation routine solves the defocusing problem, correcting for all relevant wide-angle effects. Inverse SAR (ISAR) imagery from a Radar Cross Section (RCS) chamber validates this approach. The second implementation problem stems from the large Doppler spread in the wide-angle scene, leading to severe aliasing problems. This research effort develops a new anti-aliasing technique using randomized Stepped-Frequency (SF) waveforms to form Doppler filter nulls coinciding with aliasing artifact locations. Both simulation and laboratory results demonstrate effective performance, eliminating more than 99% of the aliased energy

    Signal Processing for Synthetic Aperture Sonar Image Enhancement

    This thesis contains a description of SAS processing algorithms, offering improvements in Fourier-based reconstruction, motion-compensation, and autofocus. Fourier-based image reconstruction is reviewed and improvements shown as the result of improved system modelling. A number of new algorithms based on the wavenumber algorithm for correcting second order effects are proposed. In addition, a new framework for describing multiple-receiver reconstruction in terms of the bistatic geometry is presented and is a useful aid to understanding. Motion-compensation techniques for allowing Fourier-based reconstruction in widebeam geometries suffering large-motion errors are discussed. A motion-compensation algorithm exploiting multiple receiver geometries is suggested and shown to provide substantial improvement in image quality. New motion compensation techniques for yaw correction using the wavenumber algorithm are discussed. A common framework for describing phase estimation is presented and techniques from a number of fields are reviewed within this framework. In addition a new proof is provided outlining the relationship between eigenvector-based autofocus phase estimation kernels and the phase-closure techniques used astronomical imaging. Micronavigation techniques are reviewed and extensions to the shear average single-receiver micronavigation technique result in a 3 - 4 fold performance improvement when operating on high-contrast images. The stripmap phase gradient autofocus (SPGA) algorithm is developed and extends spotlight SAR PGA to the wide-beam, wide-band stripmap geometries common in SAS imaging. SPGA supersedes traditional PGA-based stripmap autofocus algorithms such as mPGA and PCA - the relationships between SPGA and these algorithms is discussed. SPGA's operation is verified on simulated and field-collected data where it provides significant image improvement. SPGA with phase-curvature based estimation is shown and found to perform poorly compared with phase-gradient techniques. The operation of SPGA on data collected from Sydney Harbour is shown with SPGA able to improve resolution to near the diffraction-limit. Additional analysis of practical stripmap autofocus operation in presence of undersampling and space-invariant blurring is presented with significant comment regarding the difficulties inherent in autofocusing field-collected data. Field-collected data from trials in Sydney Harbour is presented along with associated autofocus results from a number of algorithms

    Hardware Development and Error Characterisation for the AFIT RAIL SAR System

    This research is focussed on updating the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Radar Instrumentation Lab (RAIL) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) experimental system. Firstly, this research assesses current hardware limitations and updates the system configuration and methodology to enable collections from a receiver in motion. Secondly, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signals are used to form (SAR) images in multiple experimental and simulation configurations. This research analyses, characterises and attempts compensation of relevant SAR image error sources, such as Doppler shift or motion measurement errors (MMEs). Error characterisation is conducted using theoretical, simulated and experimental methods. Final experimental results are presented to verify performance of the updated SAR collection system and show improvements to the final product through an updated methodology and various signal processing techniques

    Ultralight Radar Sensor for Autonomous Operations by Mini- and Micro-UAS

    In recent years the boost in operations by mini- and micro-UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems, also known as Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems - RPAS - or simply drones) and the successful miniaturization of electronic components were experienced. Radar sensors demonstrated to have favorable features for these operations. However, despite their ability to provide meaningful information for navigation, sense-and-avoid, and imaging tasks, currently very few radar sensors are exploited onboard or developed for autonomous operations with mini- and micro-UAS. Exploration of indoor complex, dangerous, and not easily accessible environments represents a possible application for mini-UAS based on radar technology. In this scenario, the objective of the thesis is to develop design strategies and processing approaches for a novel ultralight radar sensor able to provide the miniaturized platform with Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) capabilities, mainly but not exclusively indoors. Millimeter-wave Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (mmw InSAR) technology has been identified as a key asset. At the same time, testing of commercial lightweight radar is carried out to assess potentialities towards autonomous navigation, sense-and-avoid, and imaging. The two main research lines can be outlined as follows: - Long-term scenario: Development of very compact and ultralight Synthetic Aperture Radar able to provide mini- or micro-UAS with very accurate 3D awareness in indoor or GPS-denied complex and harsh environments. - Short-term scenario: Assessment of true potentialities of current commercial radar sensors in a UAS-oriented scenario. Within the framework of long-term scenario, after a review of state-of-art SAR sensors, Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) SAR technology has been selected as preferred candidate. Design procedure tailored to this technology and software simulator for operations have been developed in MATLAB environment. Software simulator accounts for the analysis of ambiguous areas in a three-dimensional environment, different SAR focusing algorithms, and a Ray-Tracing algorithm specifically designed for indoor operations. The simulations provided relevant information on actual feasibility of the sensor, as well as mission design characteristics. Additionally, field tests have been carried out at Fraunhofer Institute FHR with a mmw SAR. Processing approaches developed from simulations proved to be effective when dealing with field tests. A very lightweight FMCW radar sensor manifactured by IMST GmbH has been tested for short-term scenario operations. The codes for data acquisition were developed in Python language both for Windows-based and GNU/Linux-based operative systems. The radar provided information on range and angle of targets in the scene, thus being interesting for radar-aided UAS navigation. Multiple-target tracking and radar odometry algorithms have been developed and tested on actual field data. Radar-only odometry provided to be effective under specific circumstances

    Adaptive waveform design for SAR in a crowded spectrum

    This thesis concerns the development of an adaptive waveform design scheme for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to support its operation in the increasingly crowded radio frequency (RF) spectrum, focusing on mitigating the effects of external RF interference. The RF spectrum is a finite resource and the rapid expansion of the telecommunications industry has seen radar users face a significant restriction in the range of available operational frequencies. This crowded spectrum scenario leads to increased likelihood of RF interference either due to energy leakage from neighbouring spectral users or from unlicensed transmitters. SAR is a wide bandwidth radar imaging mode which exploits the motion of the radar platform to form an image using multiple one dimensional profiles of the scene of interest known as the range profile. Due to its wideband nature, SAR is particularly vulnerable to RF interference which causes image impairments and overall reduction in quality. Altering the approach for radar energy transmission across the RF spectrum is now imperative to continue effective operation. Adaptive waveforms have recently become feasible for implementation and offer the much needed flexibility in the choice and control over radar transmission. However, there is a critically small processing time frame between waveform reception and transmission, which necessitates the use of computationally efficient processing algorithms to use adaptivity effectively. This simulation-based study provides a first look at adaptive waveform design for SAR to mitigate the detrimental effects of RF interference on a pulse-to-pulse basis. Standard SAR systems rely on a fixed waveform processing format on reception which restricts its potential to reap the benefits of adaptive waveform design. Firstly, to support waveform design for SAR, system identification techniques are applied to construct an alternative receive processing method which allows flexibility in waveform type. This leads to the main contribution of the thesis which is the formation of an adaptive spectral waveform design scheme. A computationally efficient closed-form expression for the waveform spectrum that minimizes the error in the estimate of the SAR range profile on a pulse to pulse basis is derived. The range profile and the spectrum of the interference are estimated at each pulse. The interference estimate is then used to redesign the proceeding waveform for estimation of the range profile at the next radar platform position. The solution necessitates that the energy is spread across the spectrum such that it competes with the interferer. The scenario where the waveform admits gaps in the spectrum in order to mitigate the effects of the interference is also detailed and is the secondary major thesis contribution. A series of test SAR images demonstrate the efficacy of these techniques and yield reduced interference effects compared to the standard SAR waveform

    Iterative synthetic aperture radar imaging algorithms

    Synthetic aperture radar is an important tool in a wide range of civilian and military imaging applications. This is primarily due to its ability to image in all weather conditions, during both the day and the night, unlike optical imaging systems. A synthetic aperture radar system contains a step which is not present in an optical imaging system, this is image formation. This is required because the acquired data from the radar sensor does not directly correspond to the image. Instead, to form an image, the system must solve an inverse problem. In conventional scenarios, this inverse problem is relatively straight forward and a matched lter based algorithm produces an image of suitable image quality. However, there are a number of interesting scenarios where this is not the case. Scenarios where standard image formation algorithms are unsuitable include systems with data undersampling, errors in the system observation model and data that is corrupted by radio frequency interference. Image formation in these scenarios will form the topics of this thesis and a number of iterative algorithms are proposed to achieve image formation. The motivation for these proposed algorithms is primarily from the eld of compressed sensing, which considers the recovery of signals with a low-dimensional structure. The rst contribution of this thesis is the development of fast algorithms for the system observation model and its adjoint. These algorithms are required by large-scale gradient based iterative algorithms for image formation. The proposed algorithms are based on existing fast back-projection algorithms, however, a new decimation strategy is proposed which is more suitable for some applications. The second contribution is the development of a framework for iterative near- eld image formation, which uses the proposed fast algorithms. It is shown that the framework can be used, in some scenarios, to improve the visual quality of images formed from fully sampled data and undersampled data, when compared to images formed using matched lter based algorithms. The third contribution concerns errors in the system observation model. Algorithms that correct these errors are commonly referred to as autofocus algorithms. It is shown that conventional autofocus algorithms, which work as a post-processor on the formed image, are unsuitable for undersampled data. Instead an autofocus algorithm is proposed which corrects errors within the iterative image formation procedure. The proposed algorithm is provably stable and convergent with a faster convergence rate than previous approaches. The nal contribution is an algorithm for ultra-wideband synthetic aperture radar image formation. Due to the large spectrum over which the ultra-wideband signal is transmitted, there is likely to be many other users operating within the same spectrum. These users can produce signi cant radio frequency interference which will corrupt the received data.
