    Algoritmos evolutivos para alguns problemas em telecomunicações

Desde a utilização massiva de vídeo sob demanda até o incontável número de dispositivos móveis trocando texto e vídeo, o tráfego alcançou uma escala capaz de superar a capacidade das redes atuais. Portanto, as companhias de telecomunicação ao redor do mundo tem sido forçadas a aumentar a capacidade de suas redes para servir esta crescente demanda. Como o custo de instalar uma infraestrutura de rede é geralmente muito grande, o projeto de redes usa fortemente ferramentas de otimização para manter os custos tão baixos quanto possível. Nesta tese, nós analisamos vários aspectos do projeto e implementação de redes de telecomunicação. Primeiramente, nós apresentamos um novo problema de projeto de redes usado para servir demandas sem fio de dispositivos móveis e rotear tal tráfego para a rede principal. Tais redes de acesso são baseadas em tecnologias sem fio modernos como Wi-Fi, LTE e HSPA. Este problema consideramos várias restrições reais e é difícil de ser resolvido. Nós estudamos casos reais nas vizinhanças de uma grande cidade nos Estados Unidos. Em seguida, nós apresentamos uma variação do problema de localização de hubs usado para modelar as redes principais (backbones ou laços centrais). Este problema também pode ser utilizado para modelar redes de transporte de cargas e passageiros. Nós também estudamos o problema de clusterização correlacionada com sobreposições usado para modelar o comportamento dos usuários quando utilizam seus equipamentos móveis. Neste problema, nós podemos rotular um objeto usando múltiplos rótulos e analisar a conexão entre eles. Este problema é adequado para análise de mobilidade de equipamentos que pode ser usada para estimar o tráfego em uma dada região. E finalmente, nós analisamos o licenciamento de espectro sobre uma perspectiva governamental. Nestes casos, uma agência do governo deseja vender licenças para companhias de telecomunicação para que operem em uma dada faixa de espectro. Este processo usualmente é conduzido usando leilões combinatoriais. Para todos problemas, nós propomos algoritmos genéticos de chaves aleatórias viciadas e modelos de programação linear inteira mista para resolvê-los (exceto para o problema de clusterização correlacionada com sobreposição, devido sua natureza não-linear). Os algoritmos que propusemos foram capazes de superar algoritmos do estado da arte para todos problemasAbstract: Cutting and packing problems are common problems that occur in many industry and business process. Their optimized resolution leads to great profits in several sectors. A common problem, that occur in textil and paper industries, is to cut a strip of some material to obtain several small items, using the minimum length of material. This problem, known by Two Dimensional Strip Packing Problem (2SP), is a hard combinatorial optimization problem. In this work, we present an exact algorithm to 2SP, restricted to two staged cuts (known by Two Dimensional Level Strip Packing, 2LSP). The algorithm uses the branch-and-price technique, and heuristics based on approximation algorithms to obtain upper bounds. The algorithm obtained optimal or almost optimal for small and moderate sized instancesAbstract: In last twenty years, telecommunication networks have experienced a huge increase in data utilization. From massive on-demand video to uncountable mobile devices exchanging text and video, traffic reached scales that overcame the network capacities. Therefore, telecommunication companies around the world have been forced to increase their capacity to serve this increasing demand. As the cost to deploy network infrastructure is usually very large, the design of a network heavily uses optimization tools to keep costs as low as possible. In this thesis, we analyze several aspects of the design and deployment of communication networks. First, we present a new network design problem used to serve wireless demands from mobile devices and route the traffic to the core network. Such access networks are based on modern wireless access technologies such as Wi-Fi, LTE, and HSPA. This problem has several real world constraints and it is hard to solve. We study real cases of the vicinity of a large city in the United States. Following, we present a variation of the hub-location problem used to model these core networks. Such problem is also suitable to model transportation networks. We also study the overlapping correlation clustering problem used to model the user's behavior when using their mobile devices. In such problem, one can label an object with multiple labels and analyzes the connections between them. Although this problem is very generic, it is suitable to analyze device mobility which can be used to estimate traffic in geographical regions. Finally, we analyze spectrum licensing from a governmental perspective. In these cases, a governmental agency wants to sell rights for telecommunication companies to operate over a given spectrum range. This process usually is conducted using combinatorial auctions. For all problems we propose biased random-key genetic algorithms and mixed integer linear programming models (except in the case of the overlapping correlation clustering problem due its non-linear nature).     Algorithms to Explore the Structure and Evolution of Biological Networks

    High-throughput experimental protocols have revealed thousands of relationships amongst genes and proteins under various conditions. These putative associations are being aggressively mined to decipher the structural and functional architecture of the cell. One useful tool for exploring this data has been computational network analysis. In this thesis, we propose a collection of novel algorithms to explore the structure and evolution of large, noisy, and sparsely annotated biological networks. We first introduce two information-theoretic algorithms to extract interesting patterns and modules embedded in large graphs. The first, graph summarization, uses the minimum description length principle to find compressible parts of the graph. The second, VI-Cut, uses the variation of information to non-parametrically find groups of topologically cohesive and similarly annotated nodes in the network. We show that both algorithms find structure in biological data that is consistent with known biological processes, protein complexes, genetic diseases, and operational taxonomic units. We also propose several algorithms to systematically generate an ensemble of near-optimal network clusterings and show how these multiple views can be used together to identify clustering dynamics that any single solution approach would miss. To facilitate the study of ancient networks, we introduce a framework called ``network archaeology'') for reconstructing the node-by-node and edge-by-edge arrival history of a network. Starting with a present-day network, we apply a probabilistic growth model backwards in time to find high-likelihood previous states of the graph. This allows us to explore how interactions and modules may have evolved over time. In experiments with real-world social and biological networks, we find that our algorithms can recover significant features of ancestral networks that have long since disappeared. Our work is motivated by the need to understand large and complex biological systems that are being revealed to us by imperfect data. As data continues to pour in, we believe that computational network analysis will continue to be an essential tool towards this end

    Making Thin Data Thick: User Behavior Analysis with Minimum Information

    abstract: With the rise of social media, user-generated content has become available at an unprecedented scale. On Twitter, 1 billion tweets are posted every 5 days and on Facebook, 20 million links are shared every 20 minutes. These massive collections of user-generated content have introduced the human behavior's big-data. This big data has brought about countless opportunities for analyzing human behavior at scale. However, is this data enough? Unfortunately, the data available at the individual-level is limited for most users. This limited individual-level data is often referred to as thin data. Hence, researchers face a big-data paradox, where this big-data is a large collection of mostly limited individual-level information. Researchers are often constrained to derive meaningful insights regarding online user behavior with this limited information. Simply put, they have to make thin data thick. In this dissertation, how human behavior's thin data can be made thick is investigated. The chief objective of this dissertation is to demonstrate how traces of human behavior can be efficiently gleaned from the, often limited, individual-level information; hence, introducing an all-inclusive user behavior analysis methodology that considers social media users with different levels of information availability. To that end, the absolute minimum information in terms of both link or content data that is available for any social media user is determined. Utilizing only minimum information in different applications on social media such as prediction or recommendation tasks allows for solutions that are (1) generalizable to all social media users and that are (2) easy to implement. However, are applications that employ only minimum information as effective or comparable to applications that use more information? In this dissertation, it is shown that common research challenges such as detecting malicious users or friend recommendation (i.e., link prediction) can be effectively performed using only minimum information. More importantly, it is demonstrated that unique user identification can be achieved using minimum information. Theoretical boundaries of unique user identification are obtained by introducing social signatures. Social signatures allow for user identification in any large-scale network on social media. The results on single-site user identification are generalized to multiple sites and it is shown how the same user can be uniquely identified across multiple sites using only minimum link or content information. The findings in this dissertation allows finding the same user across multiple sites, which in turn has multiple implications. In particular, by identifying the same users across sites, (1) patterns that users exhibit across sites are identified, (2) how user behavior varies across sites is determined, and (3) activities that are observed only across sites are identified and studied.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Computer Science 201

    MULTIMODAL LEARNING FOR AUDIO AND VISUAL PROCESSING

    The world contains vast amounts of information which can be sensed and captured in a variety of ways and formats. Virtual environments also lend themselves to endless possibilities and diversity of data. Often our experiences draw from these separate but complementary parts which can be combined in a way to provide a comprehensive representation of the events. Multimodal learning focuses on these types of combinations. By fusing multiple modalities, multimodal learning can improve results beyond individual mode performance. However, many of today’s state-of-the-art techniques in computer vision, robotics, and machine learning rely solely or primarily on visual inputs even when the visual data is obtained from video where corresponding audio may also be readily available to augment learning. Vision only approaches can experience challenges in cases of highly reflective, transparent, or occluded objects and scenes where, if used alone or in conjunction with, audio may improve task performance. To address these challenges, this thesis explores coupling multimodal information to enhance task performance through learning-based methods for audio and visual processing using real and synthetic data. Physically-based graphics pipelines can naturally be extended for audio and visual synthetic data generation. To enhance the rigid body sound synthesis pipeline for objects containing a liquid, I used an added mass operator for fluid-structure coupling as a pre-processing step. My method is fast and practical for use in interactive 3D systems where live sound synthesis is desired. By fusing audio and visual data from real and synthetic videos, we also demonstrate enhanced processing and performance for object classification, tracking, and reconstruction tasks. As has been shown in visual question and answering and other related work, multiple modalities have the ability to complement one another and outperform single modality systems. To the best of my knowledge, I introduced the first use of audio-visual neural networks to analyze liquid pouring sequences by classifying their weight, liquid, and receiving container. Prior work often required predefined source weights or visual data. My contribution was to use the sound from a pouring sequence—a liquid being poured into a target container- to train a multimodal convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that fuses mel-scaled spectrograms as audio inputs with corresponding visual data based on video images. I described the first use of an audio-visual neural network for tracking tabletop sized objects and enhancing visual object trackers. Like object detection of reflective surfaces, object trackers can also run into challenges when objects collide, occlude, appear similar, or come close to one another. By using the impact sounds of the objects during collision, my audio-visual object tracking (AVOT) neural network can correct trackers that drift from their original objects that were assigned before collision. Reflective and textureless surfaces not only are difficult to detect and classify, they are also often poorly reconstructed and filled with depth discontinuities and holes. I proposed the first use of an audiovisual method that uses the reflections of sound to aid in geometry and audio reconstruction, referred to as ”Echoreconstruction”. The mobile phone prototype emits pulsed audio, while recording video for RGBbased 3D reconstruction and audio-visual classification. Reflected sound and images from the video are input into our audio (EchoCNN-A) and audio-visual (EchoCNN-AV) convolutional neural networks for surface and sound source detection, depth estimation, and material classification. EchoCNN inferences from these classifications enhance scene 3D reconstructions containing open spaces and reflective surfaces by depth filtering, inpainting, and placement of unmixed sound sources in the scene. In addition to enhancing scene reconstructions, I proposed a multimodal single- and multi-frame reconstruction LSTM autoencoder for 3D reconstructions using audio-visual inputs. Our neural network produces high-quality 3D reconstructions using voxel representation. It is the first audio-visual reconstruction neural network for 3D geometry and material representation. Contributions of this thesis include new neural network designs, new enhancements to real and synthetic audio-visual datasets, and prototypes that demonstrate audio and audio-augmented performance for sound synthesis, inference, and reconstruction.Doctor of Philosoph
