QoS routing in ad-hoc networks using GA and multi-objective optimization

    Get PDF
Much work has been done on routing in Ad-hoc networks, but the proposed routing solutions only deal with the best effort data traffic. Connections with Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, such as voice channels with delay and bandwidth constraints, are not supported. The QoS routing has been receiving increasingly intensive attention, but searching for the shortest path with many metrics is an NP-complete problem. For this reason, approximated solutions and heuristic algorithms should be developed for multi-path constraints QoS routing. Also, the routing methods should be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent. In this paper, we use Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and multi-objective optimization for QoS routing in Ad-hoc Networks. In order to reduce the search space of GA, we implemented a search space reduction algorithm, which reduces the search space for GAMAN (GA-based routing algorithm for Mobile Ad-hoc Networks) to find a new route. We evaluate the performance of GAMAN by computer simulations and show that GAMAN has better behaviour than GLBR (Genetic Load Balancing Routing).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Research on Quality of Service Based Routing Protocols for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Quality of service (QoS) based routing protocols play a significant role in MANETs to maintain proper flow of data with efficient power consumption and without data loss. However, several network resource based technical challenges or issues are encountered in the design and implementation of QoS routing protocols that perform their routing function by considering the shortest route or the lowest cost. Furthermore, a secondary route is not reserved and alternative routes are not searched unless the established route is broken. The current structures of the state-of-the-art protocols for MANETs are not appropriate for today's high bandwidth and mobility requirements. Therefore, research on new routing protocols is needed, considering energy level, coverage, location, speed, movement, and link stability instead of only shortest path and lowest cost. This paper summarizes the main characteristics of QoS-based routing protocols to facilitate researchers to design and select QoS-based routing protocols. In this study, a wide range of protocols with their characteristics were classified according to QoS routing strategy, routing information update mechanism, interaction between network and MAC layer, QoS constraints, QoS guarantee type and number of discovered routes. In addition, the protocols were compared in terms of properties, design features, challenges and QoS metrics

Engineering the Virtual Node Layer for Reactive MANET Routing

The VNLayer approach simplifies software development for MANET by providing the developers an abstraction of a network divided into fixed geographical regions, each containing a virtual server for network services. In this paper, we present our study on reactive MANET routing over the VNLayer. During this research, we identified in our initial VNLayer implementation three major limitations that lead to heavy control traffic, long forwarding paths and frequent message collisions in MANET routing. To address the problems, we changed the assumptions made by the VNLayer on the link layer and extended the operations allowed by VNLayer. This results in a VNLayer implementation that can be tuned to optimize the performance of traffic intensive applications (such as routing) while maintaining their simplicity and robustness. Simulation results showed that VNAODV, a VNLayer based routing protocol adapted from AODV, delivers more packets, generates less routing traffic and creates more stable routes than AODV in a dense MANET with high node motion rates. This research validated that the VNLayer approach makes software development for MANET easier and improves the performance of MANET protocols

Smart PIN: utility-based replication and delivery of multimedia content to mobile users in wireless networks

Next generation wireless networks rely on heterogeneous connectivity technologies to support various rich media services such as personal information storage, file sharing and multimedia streaming. Due to users’ mobility and dynamic characteristics of wireless networks, data availability in collaborating devices is a critical issue. In this context Smart PIN was proposed as a personal information network which focuses on performance of delivery and cost efficiency. Smart PIN uses a novel data replication scheme based on individual and overall system utility to best balance the requirements for static data and multimedia content delivery with variable device availability due to user mobility. Simulations show improved results in comparison with other general purpose data replication schemes in terms of data availability

Low interference routing for wireless ad-hoc networks

In this thesis the primary focus is on the problem of interference between messages. The thesis discusses why the messages are blocked in a system? How adding a message impacts the cost of all other available links, which can be established in the system. This thesis analyzes how the availability of channels, increase in number of nodes and increase in the transmission range help in increasing the number of messages that can be handled in the network. It is also analyzes how critical is the selection of the maximum transmission range MTR, transmission range TR and required transmission range RTR. Therefore, the focus is on the method of tagging or evaluation of cost for developing any communication link between two nodes. The thesis proposes a system of evaluation of cost of each link and then utilizes the standard Dijikstra\u27 s algorithm to evaluate the cost of each message route from its source to its destination. Chapter 2 explains the proposed algorithms with examples and the way to evaluate the cost of the links, subsequently Chapter 3 discusses the actual simulation environment, the cost matrix, distance matrix and the comparison of various selections of number of nodes in the system (N), maximum transmission range (MTR) and the number of available channels for each node (Ch)
