    Human-Centered Content-Based Image Retrieval

    Retrieval of images that lack a (suitable) annotations cannot be achieved through (traditional) Information Retrieval (IR) techniques. Access through such collections can be achieved through the application of computer vision techniques on the IR problem, which is baptized Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR). In contrast with most purely technological approaches, the thesis Human-Centered Content-Based Image Retrieval approaches the problem from a human/user centered perspective. Psychophysical experiments were conducted in which people were asked to categorize colors. The data gathered from these experiments was fed to a Fast Exact Euclidean Distance (FEED) transform (Schouten & Van den Broek, 2004), which enabled the segmentation of color space based on human perception (Van den Broek et al., 2008). This unique color space segementation was exploited for texture analysis and image segmentation, and subsequently for full-featured CBIR. In addition, a unique CBIR-benchmark was developed (Van den Broek et al., 2004, 2005). This benchmark was used to explore what and how several parameters (e.g., color and distance measures) of the CBIR process influence retrieval results. In contrast with other research, users judgements were assigned as metric.     The signal processing task is a very critical issue in the majority of new technological inventions and challenges in a variety of applications in both science and engineering fields. Classical signal processing techniques have largely worked with mathematical models that are linear, local, stationary, and Gaussian. They have always favored closed-form tractability over real-world accuracy. These constraints were imposed by the lack of powerful computing tools. During the last few decades, signal processing theories, developments, and applications have matured rapidly and now include tools from many areas of mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. This book is targeted primarily toward both students and researchers who want to be exposed to a wide variety of signal processing techniques and algorithms. It includes 27 chapters that can be categorized into five different areas depending on the application at hand. These five categories are ordered to address image processing, speech processing, communication systems, time-series analysis, and educational packages respectively. The book has the advantage of providing a collection of applications that are completely independent and self-contained; thus, the interested reader can choose any chapter and skip to another without losing continuity

    Feature Extraction and Recognition for Human Action Recognition

    How to automatically label videos containing human motions is the task of human action recognition. Traditional human action recognition algorithms use the RGB videos as input, and it is a challenging task because of the large intra-class variations of actions, cluttered background, possible camera movement, and illumination variations. Recently, the introduction of cost-effective depth cameras provides a new possibility to address difficult issues. However, it also brings new challenges such as noisy depth maps and time alignment. In this dissertation, effective and computationally efficient feature extraction and recognition algorithms are proposed for human action recognition. At the feature extraction step, two novel spatial-temporal feature descriptors are proposed which can be combined with local feature detectors. The first proposed descriptor is the Shape and Motion Local Ternary Pattern (SMltp) descriptor which can dramatically reduced the number of features generated by dense sampling without sacrificing the accuracy. In addition, the Center-Symmetric Motion Local Ternary Pattern (CS-Mltp) descriptor is proposed, which describes the spatial and temporal gradients-like features. Both descriptors (SMltp and CS-Mltp) take advantage of the Local Binary Pattern (LBP) texture operator in terms of tolerance to illumination change, robustness in homogeneous region and computational efficiency. For better feature representation, this dissertation presents a new Dictionary Learning (DL) method to learn an overcomplete set of representative vectors (atoms) so that any input feature can be approximated by a linear combination of these atoms with minimum reconstruction error. Instead of simultaneously learning one overcomplete dictionary for all classes, we learn class-specific sub-dictionaries to increase the discrimination. In addition, the group sparsity and the geometry constraint are added to the learning process to further increase the discriminative power, so that features are well reconstructed by atoms from the same class and features from the same class with high similarity will be forced to have similar coefficients. To evaluate the proposed algorithms, three applications including single view action recognition, distributed multi-view action recognition, and RGB-D action recognition have been explored. Experimental results on benchmark datasets and comparative analyses with the state-of-the-art methods show the effectiveness and merits of the proposed algorithms

    Computer Vision Algorithms For An Automated Harvester

    Image classification and segmentation are the two main important parts in the 3D vision system of a harvesting robot. Regarding the first part, the vision system aids in the real time identification of contaminated areas of the farm based on the damage identified using the robot’s camera. To solve the problem of identification, a fast and non-destructive method, Support Vector Machine (SVM), is applied to improve the recognition accuracy and efficiency of the robot. Initially, a median filter is applied to remove the inherent noise in the colored image. SIFT features of the image are then extracted and computed forming a vector, which is then quantized into visual words. Finally, the histogram of the frequency of each element in the visual vocabulary is created and fed into an SVM classifier, which categorizes the mushrooms as either class one or class two. Our preliminary results for image classification were promising and the experiments carried out on the data set highlight fast computation time and a high rate of accuracy, reaching over 90% using this method, which can be employed in real life scenario. As pertains to image Segmentation on the other hand, the vision system aids in real time identification of mushrooms but a stiff challenge is encountered in robot vision as the irregularly spaced mushrooms of uneven sizes often occlude each other due to the nature of mushroom growth in the growing environment. We address the issue of mushroom segmentation by following a multi-step process; the images are first segmented in HSV color space to locate the area of interest and then both the image gradient information from the area of interest and Hough transform methods are used to locate the center position and perimeter of each individual mushroom in XY plane. Afterwards, the depth map information given by Microsoft Kinect is employed to estimate the Z- depth of each individual mushroom, which is then being used to measure the distance between the robot end effector and center coordinate of each individual mushroom. We tested this algorithm under various environmental conditions and our segmentation results indicate this method provides sufficient computational speed and accuracy
