    Incorporating standardised drift-tube ion mobility to enhance non-targeted assessment of the wine metabolome (LCĂ—IM-MS)

    Liquid chromatography with drift-tube ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry (LCxIM-MS) is emerging as a powerful addition to existing LC-MS workflows for addressing a diverse range of metabolomics-related questions [1,2]. Importantly, excellent precision under repeatability and reproducibility conditions of drift-tube IM separations [3] supports the development of non-targeted approaches for complex metabolome assessment such as wine characterisation [4]. In this work, fundamentals of this new analytical metabolomics approach are introduced and application to the analysis of 90 authentic red and white wine samples originating from Macedonia is presented. Following measurements, intersample alignment of metabolites using non-targeted extraction and three-dimensional alignment of molecular features (retention time, collision cross section, and high-resolution mass spectra) provides confidence for metabolite identity confirmation. Applying a fingerprinting metabolomics workflow allows statistical assessment of the influence of geographic region, variety, and age. This approach is a state-of-the-art tool to assess wine chemodiversity and is particularly beneficial for the discovery of wine biomarkers and establishing product authenticity based on development of fingerprint libraries

    This book describes mathematical models and systems analysis techniques applied to the study of insect pest, plant pathogens, and human diseases. The research programs of over 40 scientists from all over the world are compared and contrasted in detail to provide a state-of-the-art review on how such modeling can increase the effectiveness of more traditional ecological, biological, and chemical control methods. This is the first time such a synthesis has been attempted, and arises in part from a conference hosted by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, Laxenburg, Austria. Papers from this event, plus additional solicited material, have been grouped by Professor Conway into three sections representing strategic, tactical, and policy decision models. An introduction and three linking chapters are provided to place these models in context. Discussing specific case histories in these mathematical terms and the consequent transfer of insights and methods will be of long-term interest to both professional and academic applied entomologists, plant pathologists, medical epidemiologists, applied ecologists, and systems analysts

    This volume contains the contributions of numerous participants at the IUFRO Landscape Ecology Working Group International Conference, which took place in Bragança, Portugal, from 21 to 24 of September 2010. The conference was dedicated to the theme Forest Landscapes and Global Change - New Frontiers in Management, Conservation and Restoration. The 128 papers included in this book follow the structure and topics of the conference. Sections 1 to 8 include papers relative to presentations in 18 thematic oral and two poster sessions. Section 9 is devoted to a wide-range of landscape ecology fields covered in the 12 symposia of the conference. The Proceedings of the IUFRO Landscape Ecology Working Group International Conference register the growth of scientific interest in forest landscape patterns and processes, and the recognition of the role of landscape ecology in the advancement of science and management, particularly within the context of emerging physical, social and political drivers of change, which influence forest systems and the services they provide. We believe that these papers, together with the presentations and debate which took place during the IUFRO Landscape Ecology Working Group International Conference – Bragança 2010, will definitively contribute to the advancement of landscape ecology and science in general.
