This deliverable describes the work done in task 3.1, Middleware analysis: Analysis of current middleware used in peer-to-peer and grid implementations for enhancement by catallactic mechanisms from work package 3, Middleware Implementation. The document is divided in four parts: The introduction with application scenarios and middleware requirements, Catnets middleware architecture, evaluation of existing middleware toolkits, and conclusions. Grid Computing

In this document the Cat-COVITE Application for use in the CATNETS Project is introduced and motivated. Furthermore an introduction to the catallactic middleware and Web Services Agreement (WS-Agreement) concepts is given as a basis for the future work. Requirements for the application of Cat-COVITE with in catallactic systems are analysed. Finally the integration of the Cat-COVITE application and the catallactic middleware is described. --Grid Computing

Nowadays Cloud computing has emerged as one of the most promising computer paradigms. The idea of selling software as a service has promoted IT enterprises to bet for this new paradigm. Cloud computing aims to power the next generation data centers not only offering software as a service but virtual services like hardware, data storage capacity or application logic. The increasing use of Cloud-based applications will also increase the power dedicated to the data centers that support this Clouds. Research in Cloud computing requires solutions that have to be tested in real environments. It is difficult and expensive to set up suitable test-beds for large scale cluster applications. Simulation can fulfill the needs that we find in Cloud computing experimentation. A large data center simulator can save lots of time and effort in Cloud investigation. This project presents the design and development process of some extensions to an existing virtualized data center simulator for Cloud computing research. It is able to reproduce the behaviour of a real Cloud framework and the information that it offers of the execution makes it suitable for testing and investigation purposes. The final idea of this project was to extend the heterogeneity of the tests that can be run by the simulator to use it as a test-bed for machine learning experimentation

Distributed VR for collaborative design and manufacturing

Virtual Manufacturing (VM) applies Virtual Reality (VR) technology to provide a digital manufacturing solution in both 3D visual and interactive ways. It makes VR no longer a state-of-the art but rather an innovation technology to support modern industry. With the rapid growth of network technology and Web 3D graphics techniques, we propose a cost-effective distributed VM system for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) with limited equipment, funds and technical capabilities. The system enables SMEs to perform collaborative tasks including product design, manufacturing and resources sharing through the World Wide Web (WWW) in lower cost. This paper describes the design and critical integration issues of the system and the use of the Web 3D technology - X3D. It also evaluates the distributed VM system by comparing it to the conventional standalone CAD/CAM system

Experimental Comparison of Simulation Tools for Efficient Cloud and Mobile Cloud Computing Applications

Cloud computing provides a convenient and on-demand access to virtually unlimited computing resources. Mobile cloud computing (MCC) is an emerging technology that integrates cloud computing technology with mobile devices. MCC provides access to cloud services for mobile devices. With the growing popularity of cloud computing, researchers in this area need to conduct real experiments in their studies. Setting up and running these experiments in real cloud environments are costly. However, modeling and simulation tools are suitable solutions that often provide good alternatives for emulating cloud computing environments. Several simulation tools have been developed especially for cloud computing. In this paper, we present the most powerful simulation tools in this research area. These include CloudSim, CloudAnalyst, CloudReports, CloudExp, GreenCloud, and iCanCloud. Also, we perform experiments for some of these tools to show their capabilities
