Physics-Based Swarm Intelligence for Disaster Relief Communications
This study explores how a swarm of aerial mobile vehicles can provide network
connectivity and meet the stringent requirements of public protection and
disaster relief operations. In this context, we design a physics-based
controlled mobility strategy, which we name the extended Virtual Force Protocol
(VFPe), allowing self-propelled nodes, and in particular here unmanned aerial
vehicles, to fly autonomously and cooperatively. In this way, ground devices
scattered on the operation site may establish communications through the
wireless multi-hop communication routes formed by the network of aerial nodes.
We further investigate through simulations the behavior of the VFPe protocol,
notably focusing on the way node location information is disseminated into the
network as well as on the impact of the number of exploration nodes on the

On the vulnerabilities of voronoi-based approaches to mobile sensor deployment
Mobile sensor networks are the most promising solution to cover an Area of Interest (AoI) in safety critical scenarios. Mobile devices can coordinate with each other according to a distributed deployment algorithm, without resorting to human supervision for device positioning and network configuration. In this paper, we focus on the vulnerabilities of the deployment algorithms based on Voronoi diagrams to coordinate mobile sensors and guide their movements. We give a geometric characterization of possible attack configurations, proving that a simple attack consisting of a barrier of few compromised sensors can severely reduce network coverage. On the basis of the above characterization, we propose two new secure deployment algorithms, named SecureVor and Secure Swap Deployment (SSD). These algorithms allow a sensor to detect compromised nodes by analyzing their movements, under different and complementary operative settings. We show that the proposed algorithms are effective in defeating a barrier attack, and both have guaranteed termination. We perform extensive simulations to study the performance of the two algorithms and compare them with the original approach. Movement-Efficient Sensor Deployment in Wireless Sensor Networks With Limited Communication Range.
We study a mobile wireless sensor network (MWSN) consisting of multiple
mobile sensors or robots. Three key factors in MWSNs, sensing quality, energy
consumption, and connectivity, have attracted plenty of attention, but the
interaction of these factors is not well studied. To take all the three factors
into consideration, we model the sensor deployment problem as a constrained
source coding problem. %, which can be applied to different coverage tasks,
such as area coverage, target coverage, and barrier coverage. Our goal is to
find an optimal sensor deployment (or relocation) to optimize the sensing
quality with a limited communication range and a specific network lifetime
constraint. We derive necessary conditions for the optimal sensor deployment in
both homogeneous and heterogeneous MWSNs. According to our derivation, some
sensors are idle in the optimal deployment of heterogeneous MWSNs. Using these
necessary conditions, we design both centralized and distributed algorithms to
provide a flexible and explicit trade-off between sensing uncertainty and
network lifetime. The proposed algorithms are successfully extended to more
applications, such as area coverage and target coverage, via properly selected
density functions. Simulation results show that our algorithms outperform the
existing relocation algorithms
Node placement optimization using extended virtual force and cuckoo search algorithm in wireless sensor network
Node placement is one of the fundamental issues that affects the performance of coverage and connectivity in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). In a large scale WSN, sensor nodes are deployed randomly where they are scattered too close or far apart from each other. This random deployment causes issues such as coverage hole,
overlapping and connectivity failure that contributes to the performance of coverage and connectivity of WSN. Therefore, node placement model is develop to find the optimal node placement in order to maintain the coverage and guaranteed the connectivity in random deployment. The performance of Extended Virtual Force-Based Algorithm (EVFA) and Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm are evaluated and EVFA shows the improvement of coverage area and exhibits a guaranteed connectivity compared to CS algorithm. Both algorithms have their own strength in improving the coverage performance. The EVFA approach can relocate the sensor
nodes using a repulsive and attractive force after initial deployment and CS algorithm is more efficient in exploring the search of maximum coverage area in random deployment. This study proposed Extended Virtual Force and Cuckoo Search (EVFCS) algorithm with a combination of EVFA and CS algorithm to find
an optimal node placement. A series of experimental studies on evaluation of proposed algorithm were conducted within simulated environment. In EVFCS, the algorithm searches the best value of threshold distance and relocated the new position of sensor nodes. The result suggested 18.212m is the best threshold distance that maximizes the coverage area. It also minimizes the problems of coverage hole
and overlapping while guaranteeing a reasonable connectivity quality. It proved that the proposed EVFCS outperforms the EVFA approach and achieved a significant improvement in coverage area and guaranteed connectivity. A Survey on Communication Networks for Electric System Automation

The operational and commercial demands of electric utilities require a high-performance data communication network that supports both existing functionalities and future operational requirements. In this respect, since such a communication network constitutes the core of the electric system automation applications, the design of a cost-effective and reliable network architecture is crucial.
In this paper, the opportunities and challenges of a hybrid network architecture are discussed for electric system automation.
More specifically, Internet based Virtual Private Networks, power line communications, satellite communications and wireless communications (wireless sensor networks, WiMAX and wireless mesh networks) are described in detail. The motivation of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the hybrid network architecture that can provide heterogeneous electric system automation application requirements. Supporting Cyber-Physical Systems with Wireless Sensor Networks: An Outlook of Software and Services
Sensing, communication, computation and control technologies are the essential building blocks of a cyber-physical system (CPS). Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a way to support CPS as they provide fine-grained spatial-temporal sensing, communication and computation at a low premium of cost and power. In this article, we explore the fundamental concepts guiding the design and implementation of WSNs. We report the latest developments in WSN software and services for meeting existing requirements and newer demands; particularly in the areas of: operating system, simulator and emulator, programming abstraction, virtualization, IP-based communication and security, time and location, and network monitoring and management. We also reflect on the ongoing
efforts in providing dependable assurances for WSN-driven CPS. Finally, we report on its applicability with a case-study on smart buildings
