Food supply chain network robustness : a literature review and research agenda
Todayâs business environment is characterized by challenges of strong global competition where companies tend to achieve leanness and maximum responsiveness. However, lean supply chain networks (SCNs) become more vulnerable to all kind of disruptions. Food SCNs have to become robust, i.e. they should be able to continue to function in the event of disruption as well as in normal business environment. Current literature provides no explicit clarification related to robustness issue in food SCN context. This paper explores the meaning of SCN robustness and highlights further research direction
Risks associated with Logistics 4.0 and their minimization using Blockchain
Currently we are saying that we are at the dawn of the fourth revolution, which is marked by using cyber-physical systems and the Internet of Things. This is marked as Industry 4.0 (I4.0). With Industry 4.0 is also closely linked concept Logistics 4.0. The highly dynamic and uncertain logistic markets and huge logistic networks require new methods, products and services. The concept of the Internet of Things and Services (IoT&S), Big Data/Data Mining (DM), cloud computing, 3D printing, Blockchain and cyber physical system (CPS) etc. seem to be the probable technical solution for that. However, associated risks hamper its implementation and lack a comprehensive overview. In response, the paper proposes a framework of risks in the context of Logistics 4.0. They are here economic risks, that are associated e.g. with high or false investments. From a social perspective, risks the job losses, are considered too. Additionally, risks can be associated with technical risks, e.g. technical integration, information technology (IT)-related risks such as data security, and legal and political risks, such as for instance unsolved legal clarity in terms of data possession. Supply Chain Risk Management in the Container Liner Shipping Industry from a Strategic Point of View
One of the most significant current discussions in the container liner shipping industry (CLSI) is supply chain risk management (SCRM). In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in managing risk and reliability in the container supply chain from many viewpoints. This paper reviews the significant literature related to SCRM in the CLSI from a strategic point of view. By integrating the concept of the CLSI, the planning levels of container liner shipping and the concept of SCRM, questions have been raised about risk and uncertainty arising from the external environments (i.e. country-limited scope) and how can these factors influence the organisational reliability and capability of liner shipping operators (LSOs). Another question concerns how uncertain environments can influence the punctuality of containerships. So far, however, no research has been found that answered these questions which make further research is meaningful. For future research, this paper recommends an extensive assessment of a business environment-based risk and an evaluation of organizational reliability and capability of LSOs from the strategic point of view. Finally, it is worth mentioning that there is a research gap in both industry and academia on how to analyse and predict the punctuality of containerships (i.e. arrival and departure) under uncertain environments. Beyond harsh trade? The relevance of âsoftâ competitiveness factors for Ugandan enterprises to endure in Global Value Chains
This article is based on an empirical study which examined the issues
of organization and coordination of global production and trade for the
case of trade between Uganda and Europe.Respective experiences of
34 exporters in Uganda and 19 importers in Europe were documented
through in-depth interviews and consequently analyzed. The article
discusses matters of cooperation between the exporters and importers and
points to its significance for upgrading and enhancing competitiveness of
the exporters studied. It further identifies firm level âsoft competitiveness
factorsâ (SCFs) of Ugandan exporters and discusses their relevance
for the firmsâ performance in Global Value Chains. The findings reveal
that deficiencies in SCFs can have damaging effects, and vice-versa.
Possession of the SCFs can yield significant competitive advantage for
exporters and help to strengthen the relationship with the importers.
Findings of ill-treatment of exporters by their importers highlight a
particular kind of challenge that is often overseen in the debate about
exports of African firms: the challenge regarding business behaviours,
practices, and ethics including the ability to engage in relations with
foreign buyers and leverage resources, knowledge and generally
cooperation from them, first, and the general issue of problematic business

A simheuristic for routing electric vehicles with limited driving ranges and stochastic travel times
Green transportation is becoming relevant in the context of smart cities, where the use of electric vehicles represents a promising strategy to support sustainability policies. However the use of electric vehicles shows some drawbacks as well, such as their limited driving-range capacity. This paper analyses a realistic vehicle routing problem in which both driving-range constraints and stochastic travel times are considered. Thus, the main goal is to minimize the expected time-based cost required to complete the freight distribution plan. In order to design reliable Routing plans, a simheuristic algorithm is proposed. It combines Monte Carlo simulation with a multi-start metaheuristic, which also employs biased-randomization techniques. By including simulation, simheuristics extend the capabilities of metaheuristics to deal with stochastic problems. A series of computational experiments are performed to test our solving approach as well as to analyse the effect of uncertainty on the routing plans.Peer Reviewe
An assessment of supply chain and innovation management practices in the manufacturing industries in Turkey
This paper aims at assessing the supply chain and innovation management in the manufacturing industries in Turkey on an empirical basis. The assessments presented are based on parts of the data and information collected through the execution of the Competitive Strategies and Best Practices Benchmarking Questionnaire in 82 companies from four sectors of the manufacturing industries in Turkey. Results of these sectoral benchmarking studies reported elsewhere indicate the need of adopting product differentiation particularly through more knowledge intensive products as the dominant competitive strategy and also the need for improvement in various areas of supply chain as well as innovation management. In this paper, these issues are analysed through the survey results and some conclusions are drawn. Several policy measures applicable in near future are suggested for improving the areas found in need of improvement
On the role of Prognostics and Health Management in advanced maintenance systems
The advanced use of the Information and Communication Technologies is evolving the way that systems are managed and maintained. A great number of techniques and methods have emerged in the light of these advances allowing to have an accurate and knowledge about the systemsâ condition evolution and remaining useful life. The advances are recognized as outcomes of an innovative discipline, nowadays discussed under the term of Prognostics and Health Management (PHM). In order to analyze how maintenance will change by using PHM, a conceptual model is proposed built upon three views. The model highlights: (i) how PHM may impact the definition of maintenance policies; (ii) how PHM fits within the Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and (iii) how PHM can be integrated into Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) programs.
