Managing Interacting Criteria: Application to Environmental Evaluation Practices
The need for organizations to evaluate their environmental practices has been recently increasing. This fact has led to the development of many approaches to appraise such practices. In this paper, a novel decision model to evaluate companyâs environmental practices is proposed to improve traditional evaluation process in different facets. Firstly, different reviewersâ collectives related to the companyâs activity are taken into account in the process to increase company internal efficiency and external legitimacy. Secondly, following the standard ISO 14031, two general categories of environmental performance indicators, management and operational, are considered. Thirdly, since the assumption of independence among environmental indicators is rarely verified in environmental context, an aggregation operator to bear in mind the relationship among such indicators in the evaluation results is proposed. Finally, this new model integrates quantitative and qualitative information with different scales using a multi-granular linguistic model that allows to adapt diverse evaluation scales according to appraisersâ knowledge
Modelling fraud detection by attack trees and Choquet integral
Modelling an attack tree is basically a matter of associating a logical ĂndĂand a logical ĂrĂ but in most of real world applications related to fraud management the Ănd/orĂlogic is not adequate to effectively represent the relationship between a parent node and its children, most of all when information about attributes is associated to the nodes and the main problem to solve is how to promulgate attribute values up the tree through recursive aggregation operations occurring at the Ănd/orĂnodes. OWA-based aggregations have been introduced to generalize ĂndĂand ĂrĂoperators starting from the observation that in between the extremes Ăor allĂ(and) and Ăor anyĂ(or), terms (quantifiers) like ĂeveralĂ ĂostĂ ĂewĂ ĂomeĂ etc. can be introduced to represent the different weights associated to the nodes in the aggregation. The aggregation process taking place at an OWA node depends on the ordered position of the child nodes but it doesnĂ take care of the possible interactions between the nodes. In this paper, we propose to overcome this drawback introducing the Choquet integral whose distinguished feature is to be able to take into account the interaction between nodes. At first, the attack tree is valuated recursively through a bottom-up algorithm whose complexity is linear versus the number of nodes and exponential for every node. Then, the algorithm is extended assuming that the attribute values in the leaves are unimodal LR fuzzy numbers and the calculation of Choquet integral is carried out using the alpha-cuts.Fraud detection; attack tree; ordered weighted averaging (OWA) operator; Choquet integral; fuzzy numbers.
A HIERARCHICAL STRUCTURE FOR SHIP DIESEL ENGINE TROUBLE-SHOOTING PROBLEM USING FUZZY AHP AND FUZZY VIKOR HYBRID METHODS
Although considerable technical preventive measures have been taken in marine diesel engine and auxiliary systems, it is possible to observe unexpected faults in the course of the operating conditions. These faults can become so severe that they can cause losses which can be irreversible. This study aims to present Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and VIKOR (Vise Kriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje) methods applied for the expert failure detection of marine diesel engine and auxiliary systems. In this study, the failures of marine diesel engine have been revealed and prioritized. Accordingly, the section of the machine from which the failures primarily arise has been determined. At the same time, the importance of the effective use of time in determining and responding to the failures has been indicated. By means of the evaluation of decision-making groups, the system most severely affected by failures has been decided
Teachers as action researchers: Towards a model of induction
Towards the end of 2006, a group of secondary and primary teachers, in collaboration with university researchers based at the University of Waikato, began a two-year journey where they researched their own practice as teachers of literature in multicultural classrooms in Auckland, New Zealand. This presentation briefly outlines the Teaching and Learning Research Initiative (TLRI), which initially provided a vision of teachers, working in partnership with university researchers, researching their own practice with the aim of enhancing the practice of the teaching profession as a whole. Origins of Modern Data Analysis Linked to the Beginnings and Early Development of Computer Science and Information Engineering
The history of data analysis that is addressed here is underpinned by two
themes, -- those of tabular data analysis, and the analysis of collected
heterogeneous data. "Exploratory data analysis" is taken as the heuristic
approach that begins with data and information and seeks underlying explanation
for what is observed or measured. I also cover some of the evolving context of
research and applications, including scholarly publishing, technology transfer
