A Hoare-like logic of asserted single-pass instruction sequences
We present a formal system for proving the partial correctness of a
single-pass instruction sequence as considered in program algebra by
decomposition into proofs of the partial correctness of segments of the
single-pass instruction sequence concerned. The system is similar to Hoare
logics, but takes into account that, by the presence of jump instructions,
segments of single-pass instruction sequences may have multiple entry points
and multiple exit points. It is intended to support a sound general
understanding of the issues with Hoare-like logics for low-level programming
languages.Comment: 22 pages, the preliminaries have textual overlaps with the

Generic Trace Semantics via Coinduction
Trace semantics has been defined for various kinds of state-based systems,
notably with different forms of branching such as non-determinism vs.
probability. In this paper we claim to identify one underlying mathematical
structure behind these "trace semantics," namely coinduction in a Kleisli
category. This claim is based on our technical result that, under a suitably
order-enriched setting, a final coalgebra in a Kleisli category is given by an
initial algebra in the category Sets. Formerly the theory of coalgebras has
been employed mostly in Sets where coinduction yields a finer process semantics
of bisimilarity. Therefore this paper extends the application field of
coalgebras, providing a new instance of the principle "process semantics via
coinduction."Comment: To appear in Logical Methods in Computer Science. 36 page
Temporal Stream Algebra
Data stream management systems (DSMS) so far focus on
event queries and hardly consider combined queries to both
data from event streams and from a database. However,
applications like emergency management require combined
data stream and database queries. Further requirements are
the simultaneous use of multiple timestamps after different
time lines and semantics, expressive temporal relations between multiple time-stamps and
exible negation, grouping
and aggregation which can be controlled, i. e. started and
stopped, by events and are not limited to fixed-size time
windows. Current DSMS hardly address these requirements.
This article proposes Temporal Stream Algebra (TSA) so
as to meet the afore mentioned requirements. Temporal
streams are a common abstraction of data streams and data-
base relations; the operators of TSA are generalizations of
the usual operators of Relational Algebra. A in-depth 'analysis of temporal relations guarantees that valid TSA expressions are non-blocking, i. e. can be evaluated incrementally.
In this respect TSA differs significantly from previous algebraic approaches which use specialized operators to prevent
blocking expressions on a "syntactical" level
Knowledge Representation Concepts for Automated SLA Management
Outsourcing of complex IT infrastructure to IT service providers has
increased substantially during the past years. IT service providers must be
able to fulfil their service-quality commitments based upon predefined Service
Level Agreements (SLAs) with the service customer. They need to manage, execute
and maintain thousands of SLAs for different customers and different types of
services, which needs new levels of flexibility and automation not available
with the current technology. The complexity of contractual logic in SLAs
requires new forms of knowledge representation to automatically draw inferences
and execute contractual agreements. A logic-based approach provides several
advantages including automated rule chaining allowing for compact knowledge
representation as well as flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing business
requirements. We suggest adequate logical formalisms for representation and
enforcement of SLA rules and describe a proof-of-concept implementation. The
article describes selected formalisms of the ContractLog KR and their adequacy
for automated SLA management and presents results of experiments to demonstrate
flexibility and scalability of the approach.Comment: Paschke, A. and Bichler, M.: Knowledge Representation Concepts for

A Sound and Complete Axiomatization of Majority-n Logic
Manipulating logic functions via majority operators recently drew the
attention of researchers in computer science. For example, circuit optimization
based on majority operators enables superior results as compared to traditional
logic systems. Also, the Boolean satisfiability problem finds new solving
approaches when described in terms of majority decisions. To support computer
logic applications based on majority a sound and complete set of axioms is
required. Most of the recent advances in majority logic deal only with ternary
majority (MAJ- 3) operators because the axiomatization with solely MAJ-3 and
complementation operators is well understood. However, it is of interest
extending such axiomatization to n-ary majority operators (MAJ-n) from both the
theoretical and practical perspective. In this work, we address this issue by
introducing a sound and complete axiomatization of MAJ-n logic. Our
axiomatization naturally includes existing majority logic systems. Based on
this general set of axioms, computer applications can now fully exploit the
expressive power of majority logic.Comment: Accepted by the IEEE Transactions on Computer
