    An Exploratory Investigation of System Success Factors in Data Warehousing

    Despite the increasing role of the data warehouse as a strategic information source for decision makers, academic research has been lacking, especially from an organizational perspective. An exploratory study was conducted to improve general understanding of data warehousing issues from the perspective of IS success. For this, the effect of variables pertaining to system quality, information quality, and service quality on user satisfaction for the data warehouse was studied. Additional characterization was made on data warehouse users, their organizational tasks, and data warehouse usage. Empirical data were gathered at a large enterprise from three different information sources: a survey, unstructured group interviews with end-users, and informal interviews with an IT manager who was in charge of the data warehouse. Data analysis showed that user satisfaction with the data warehouse was significantly affected by such system quality factors as data quality, data locatability, and system throughput. Interviews also supported the existence of system design and management issues that have to be addressed to optimize the utility of the data warehouse as an effective decision support environment. In the meantime, data analysis indicated that first-line (or lower) and middle managers were the main users of the system. Managers and knowledge workers were taking advantage of the system to perform complex tasks, to support decision making, and to seek information critical for enhanced productivity. The group interviews revealed additional benefits of the data warehouse and major roadblocks in its successful usage

    An exploratory treatise on consciousness and espousal of halal supply-chain: an Indian perspective

    The purpose of this research is to be acquainted with the awareness and approval of halal supply chain among Indian manufacturers and distribution network members for haulage and warehousing activities from the perception of respective service suppliers. A total of 20 respondents, which consist of 10 transportation companies and 10 warehousing companies from the State of Andhra Pradesh in India were selected for the study by using purposive sampling method. The principal focal points of the discussions are on awareness and adoption of halal transportation and warehousing services chosen for the study in the comprehensive halal supply chain. A total of 90 percent and 70 percent of respondents from the transportation and warehousing companies respectively agreed that they know only about the concept of halal but do not have any exposure and ken on the halal supply chain. However, findings of this research won’t have extensive validity in the market, gaining an enough familiarity with the halal supply chain in the Indian social context is of immense importance. This is a pioneering attempt aimed to investigate the awareness and adoption levels of halal supply chain among Indian businessmen which are precious for supply chain companies to customize their services in the country as well to the world of academia

    Examining Quality Factors Influencing the Success of Data Warehouse

    Increased organizational dependence on data warehouse (DW) systems has drived the management attention towards improving data warehouse systems to a success. However, the successful implementation rate of the data warehouse systems is low and many firms do not achieve intended goals. A recent study shows that improves and evaluates data warehouse success is one of the top concerns facing IT/DW executives. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research that addresses the issue of the data warehouse systems success. In addition, it is important for organizations to learn about quality needs to be emphasized before the actual data warehouse is built. It is also important to determine what aspects of data warehouse systems success are critical to organizations to help IT/DW executives to devise effective data warehouse success improvement strategies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to further the understanding of the factors which are critical to evaluate the success of data warehouse systems. The study attempted to develop a comprehensive model for the success of data warehouse systems by adapting the updated DeLone and McLean IS Success Model. Researcher models the relationship between the quality factors on the one side and the net benefits of data warehouse on the other side. This study used quantitative method to test the research hypotheses by survey data. The data were collected by using a web-based survey. The sample consisted of 244 members of The Data Warehouse Institution (TDWI) working in variety industries around the world. The questionnaire measured six independent variables and one dependent variable. The independent variables were meant to measure system quality, information quality, service quality, relationship quality, user quality, and business quality. The dependent variable was meant to measure the net benefits of data warehouse systems. Analysis using descriptive analysis, factor analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis resulted in the support of all hypotheses. The research results indicated that there are statistically positive causal relationship between each quality factors and the net benefits of the data warehouse systems. These results imply that the net benefits of the data warehouse systems increases when the overall qualities were increased. Yet, little thought seems to have been given to what the data warehouse success is, what is necessary to achieve the success of data warehouse, and what benefits can be realistically expected. Therefore, it appears nearly certain and plausible that the way data warehouse systems success is implemented in the future could be changed

    The Impact of Business Intelligence Tools on Performance: A User Satisfaction Paradox?

    While Business Intelligence (BI) initiatives have been a top-priority of CIOs around the worldfor several years, accounting for billions of USD of IT investments per annum (IDC), academicresearch on the actual benefits derived from BI tools and the drivers of these benefits remainsparse.This paper reports the findings of an exploratory, cross-sectional field study investigatingthe factors that define and drive benefits associated with the deployment of dedicated BI tools.BI is broadly defined as an analytical process which transforms fragmented data ofenterprises and markets into action-oriented information or knowledge about objectives,opportunities and positions of an organization; BI tools are software products primarilydesigned and deployed to support this analytical process (e.g. data warehouse software, datamining software, digital dashboards applications).Building upon DeLoneand McLean’s (1992; 2002; 2003) information systems successmodel, we develop, test and refine a BI quality and performance model adapted for the specificpurpose, application, user group and technology of BI tools. The ultimate performancepredictors in this model are user satisfaction and the impact of BI tools on managerial decisionquality, both of which are determined by data quality.Partial Least Square (PLS) modeling is used to analyze data collected in a surveyadministered to IT executives of large Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) listed companies.The results confirm some of the theoretical relationships established in – especially theoriginal – DeLone-McLean model in the specific context of BI. More importantly, the resultsalso confirm the important role of explicit BI management as antecedent of benefits derived fromBI tools, and the key impact of data quality on managerial decision making and organizationalperformance.However, the results also reveal a ‘user satisfaction paradox’: In contrast to thepredictions derived from the DeLone-McLean model, organizational performance is negativelyassociated with user satisfaction with BI tools. Financial performance data collected for ex-post verification of this unexpected result confirm this paradox. We discuss BI-specificinterpretations of these unexpected findings and provide avenues for future research

    A Structural Model of Data Warehousing Success

    Data warehousing is an important area of practice and research, yet few studies have assessed its practices in general and critical success factors in particular. Although plenty of guidelines for implementation exist, few have been subjected to empirical testing. Furthermore, no model is available for comparing and evaluating the various claims made in different studies. In order to better understand the critical success factors and their effects on data warehousing success, a research model is developed in this paper. This model is useful for comparing findings across studies and for selecting variables for future research. The model is tested using data collected from a cross sectional survey of data warehousing professionals. Partial Least Square (PLS) is used to validate the structural relations identified in the model. The resulting model has three groups of success factors. Technical factor is found to positively influence information quality, whereas both operational and economic factors have a positive effect on system quality. Structural relations are also found among the dependent variables. System quality positively influences information quality, which in turn positively affects individual benefits. Individual benefits in turn has a positive relation with organizational benefits

    An ES process framework for understanding the strategic decision making process of ES implementations

    Enterprise systems (ES) implementations are regarded costly, time and resource consuming and have a great impact on the organization in terms of the risks they involve and the opportunities they provide. The steering committee (SC) represents the group of individuals who is responsible for making strategic decisions throughout the ES implementation lifecycle. It is evident from recent studies that there is a relationship between the decision making process and ES implementation success. One of the key elements that contribute to the success of ES implementations is a quick decision making process (Brown and Vessey, 1999; Gupta, 2000; Parr, et al., 1999). This study addresses the strategic decision-making process by SC through its focus on four research questions (1) How can the strategic decision-making process in the implementation of ES be better understood, during each phase of the ES implementation lifecycle? (2) What is the process by which the SC makes strategic decisions? (3) How are fast decisions made? and (4) How does decision speed link to the success of ES implementation? Process models of ES implementation will provide a framework to investigate the strategic decision making process during each phases of the ES implementation lifecycle. Patterns in the decision making process will be explored using strategic choice models. This study develops a research model that focuses on the decision making process by steering committee to explore research questions. It concludes with identifying contributions to both IS research and business practitioners

    Companies are increasingly focussing their information systems efforts around Business Intelligence (BI) solutions. The benefits realised from BI vary significantly from company to company. BI systems are now being used as extensions of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems as they consolidate, transform and analyse the vast amounts of data generated by the firm. Much attention has been given to the identification of critical success factors (CSF) associated with the adoption of ERP systems. However, there is only limited research that has focussed on the CSF associated with BI implementations as part of an ERP system environment. Hence, this research documents BI specific critical success factors that industry partners, venders or systems users have identified in their presentations at conferences, education forms or formal user group meetings
