    Developing Knowledge-Based Systems: Car Failure Detection using Expert System

    To develop an expert system describes the knowledge-base of the car failure detection. 19 rule-based of car fault diagnosis expert system using the Visual Basic and Microsoft Access as tools for helping inexperienced mechanic as the decision support system. During the test phase of system it never gave wrong detection according to the rules used. It can be concluded that car failure detection expert system is helpful although it might not give a complete guides and help as a human expert namely mechanical engineer do, but at least the expert system can give a temporary assistance to those who are in need of an instance help.     Expert System for Diagnosis of Motor Failures in Electronic Injection Vehicles

    Today, cars are an indispensable element in the society, as well as the vehicle diagnosis of minor and serious mechanical failures. This process is carried out through two methods: (i) manually, inspecting possible common causes; and (ii) automatically, using a failure identification scanner. In both cases the assistance of a car expert is required. However, how could a common user briefly diagnose vehicle failures? The objective of this project has been to build an expert system module for vehicular diagnosis to help the common user, identifying automotive failures and the severity of the vehicle damage. It also helps to prevent major damages and possible accidents, as well as to achieve a technical and effective communication when the situation is being explained to the mechanical assistance which can be even by telephone. The module design was composed by four phases: (i) do background research about failure diagnosis, (ii) production rules; (iii) inference engine; and (iv) user interface. The results show that the expert system module is 71,43% effective, so that it helps the common user to identify electronic engine failures without the assistance of a professional in the area

    Formal verification of AI software

    The application of formal verification techniques to Artificial Intelligence (AI) software, particularly expert systems, is investigated. Constraint satisfaction and model inversion are identified as two formal specification paradigms for different classes of expert systems. A formal definition of consistency is developed, and the notion of approximate semantics is introduced. Examples are given of how these ideas can be applied in both declarative and imperative forms

    Cardiovascular-renal axis disorders in the domestic dog and cat: a veterinary consensus statement

    OBJECTIVES There is a growing understanding of the complexity of interplay between renal and cardiovascular systems in both health and disease. The medical profession has adopted the term "cardiorenal syndrome" (CRS) to describe the pathophysiological relationship between the kidney and heart in disease. CRS has yet to be formally defined and described by the veterinary profession and its existence and importance in dogs and cats warrant investigation. The CRS Consensus Group, comprising nine veterinary cardiologists and seven nephrologists from Europe and North America, sought to achieve consensus around the definition, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of dogs and cats with "cardiovascular-renal disorders" (CvRD). To this end, the Delphi formal methodology for defining/building consensus and defining guidelines was utilised. METHODS Following a literature review, 13 candidate statements regarding CvRD in dogs and cats were tested for consensus, using a modified Delphi method. As a new area of interest, well-designed studies, specific to CRS/CvRD, are lacking, particularly in dogs and cats. Hence, while scientific justification of all the recommendations was sought and used when available, recommendations were largely reliant on theory, expert opinion, small clinical studies and extrapolation from data derived from other species. RESULTS Of the 13 statements, 11 achieved consensus and 2 did not. The modified Delphi approach worked well to achieve consensus in an objective manner and to develop initial guidelines for CvRD. DISCUSSION The resultant manuscript describes consensus statements for the definition, classification, diagnosis and management strategies for veterinary patients with CvRD, with an emphasis on the pathological interplay between the two organ systems. By formulating consensus statements regarding CvRD in veterinary medicine, the authors hope to stimulate interest in and advancement of the understanding and management of CvRD in dogs and cats. The use of a formalised method for consensus and guideline development should be considered for other topics in veterinary medicine

    Diagnosis: Reasoning from first principles and experiential knowledge

    Completeness, efficiency and autonomy are requirements for suture diagnostic reasoning systems. Methods for automating diagnostic reasoning systems include diagnosis from first principles (i.e., reasoning from a thorough description of structure and behavior) and diagnosis from experiential knowledge (i.e., reasoning from a set of examples obtained from experts). However, implementation of either as a single reasoning method fails to meet these requirements. The approach of combining reasoning from first principles and reasoning from experiential knowledge does address the requirements discussed above and can possibly ease some of the difficulties associated with knowledge acquisition by allowing developers to systematically enumerate a portion of the knowledge necessary to build the diagnosis program. The ability to enumerate knowledge systematically facilitates defining the program's scope, completeness, and competence and assists in bounding, controlling, and guiding the knowledge acquisition process

    Machine learning and its applications in reliability analysis systems

    In this thesis, we are interested in exploring some aspects of Machine Learning (ML) and its application in the Reliability Analysis systems (RAs). We begin by investigating some ML paradigms and their- techniques, go on to discuss the possible applications of ML in improving RAs performance, and lastly give guidelines of the architecture of learning RAs. Our survey of ML covers both levels of Neural Network learning and Symbolic learning. In symbolic process learning, five types of learning and their applications are discussed: rote learning, learning from instruction, learning from analogy, learning from examples, and learning from observation and discovery. The Reliability Analysis systems (RAs) presented in this thesis are mainly designed for maintaining plant safety supported by two functions: risk analysis function, i.e., failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) ; and diagnosis function, i.e., real-time fault location (RTFL). Three approaches have been discussed in creating the RAs. According to the result of our survey, we suggest currently the best design of RAs is to embed model-based RAs, i.e., MORA (as software) in a neural network based computer system (as hardware). However, there are still some improvement which can be made through the applications of Machine Learning. By implanting the 'learning element', the MORA will become learning MORA (La MORA) system, a learning Reliability Analysis system with the power of automatic knowledge acquisition and inconsistency checking, and more.     Automatic determination of fault effects on aircraft functionality

    The problem of determining the behavior of physical systems subsequent to the occurrence of malfunctions is discussed. It is established that while it was reasonable to assume that the most important fault behavior modes of primitive components and simple subsystems could be known and predicted, interactions within composite systems reached levels of complexity that precluded the use of traditional rule-based expert system techniques. Reasoning from first principles, i.e., on the basis of causal models of the physical system, was required. The first question that arises is, of course, how the causal information required for such reasoning should be represented. The bond graphs presented here occupy a position intermediate between qualitative and quantitative models, allowing the automatic derivation of Kuipers-like qualitative constraint models as well as state equations. Their most salient feature, however, is that entities corresponding to components and interactions in the physical system are explicitly represented in the bond graph model, thus permitting systematic model updates to reflect malfunctions. Researchers show how this is done, as well as presenting a number of techniques for obtaining qualitative information from the state equations derivable from bond graph models. One insight is the fact that one of the most important advantages of the bond graph ontology is the highly systematic approach to model construction it imposes on the modeler, who is forced to classify the relevant physical entities into a small number of categories, and to look for two highly specific types of interactions among them. The systematic nature of bond graph model construction facilitates the process to the point where the guidelines are sufficiently specific to be followed by modelers who are not domain experts. As a result, models of a given system constructed by different modelers will have extensive similarities. Researchers conclude by pointing out that the ease of updating bond graph models to reflect malfunctions is a manifestation of the systematic nature of bond graph construction, and the regularity of the relationship between bond graph models and physical reality
