    An Analysis of Using Expert Systems and Intelligent Agents for the Virtual Library Project at the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Carderock Division

    The Virtual Library Project1 at the Naval Surface Warfare Center/Carderock Division (NSWC/CD) is being developed to facilitate the incorporation and use of library documents via the Internet. These documents typically relate to the design and manufacture of ships for the U.S. Navy Fleet. As such, the libraries will store documents that contain not only text but also images, graphs and design configurations. Because of the dynamic nature of digital documents, particularly those related to design, rapid and effective cataloging of these documents becomes challenging. We conducted a research study to analyze the use of expert systems and intelligent agents to support the function of cataloging digital documents. This chapter provides an overview of past research in the use of expert systems and intelligent agents for cataloging digital documents and discusses our recommendations based on NSWC/CD’s requirements

    User Models for Information Systems: Prospects and Problems

    Expert systems attempt to model multiple aspects of human-computer interaction, including the reasoning of the human expert, the knowledge base, and characteristics and goals of the user. This paper focuses on models of the human user that are held by the system and utilized in interaction, with particular attention to information retrieval applications. User models may be classified along several dimensions, including static vs. dynamic, stated vs. inferred, and short-term vs. longterm models. The choice of the type of model will depend on a number of factors, including frequency of use, the relationship between the user and the system, the scope of the system, and the diversity of the user population. User models are most effective for well-defined tasks, domains, and user characteristics and goals. These user-system aspects tend not to be well defined in most information retrieval applications.published or submitted for publicatio

    Discovery Tools and Local Metadata Requirements in Academic Libraries

    As the second decade of the twenty-first century commences, academic librarians who work to promote collection access must not only contend with a vast array of content available in a wide range of formats, but they must also ensure that new technologies developed to accommodate user search behaviors yield satisfactory outcomes. Next generation discovery tools are designed to streamline the search process and facilitate better search results by incorporating metadata from proprietary and local collections, then by providing relevancy-ranked results. This paper investigates the implications of discovery tool use for accessing materials housed in institutional repositories and special collections, in particular, how the discovery of these materials depends on local metadata creation practices. This paper surveys current research pertaining to metadata quality issues that may put unique local collections at risk for being overlooked in meta-search relevancy rankings, and considers ways in which academic libraries can address this issue as well as areas for future research
