Maximizing the Total Resolution of Graphs
A major factor affecting the readability of a graph drawing is its
resolution. In the graph drawing literature, the resolution of a drawing is
either measured based on the angles formed by consecutive edges incident to a
common node (angular resolution) or by the angles formed at edge crossings
(crossing resolution). In this paper, we evaluate both by introducing the
notion of "total resolution", that is, the minimum of the angular and crossing
resolution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time where the
problem of maximizing the total resolution of a drawing is studied.
The main contribution of the paper consists of drawings of asymptotically
optimal total resolution for complete graphs (circular drawings) and for
complete bipartite graphs (2-layered drawings). In addition, we present and
experimentally evaluate a force-directed based algorithm that constructs
drawings of large total resolution
An Order-based Algorithm for Minimum Dominating Set with Application in Graph Mining
Dominating set is a set of vertices of a graph such that all other vertices
have a neighbour in the dominating set. We propose a new order-based randomised
local search (RLS) algorithm to solve minimum dominating set problem in
large graphs. Experimental evaluation is presented for multiple types of
problem instances. These instances include unit disk graphs, which represent a
model of wireless networks, random scale-free networks, as well as samples from
two social networks and real-world graphs studied in network science. Our
experiments indicate that RLS performs better than both a classical greedy
approximation algorithm and two metaheuristic algorithms based on ant colony
optimisation and local search. The order-based algorithm is able to find small
dominating sets for graphs with tens of thousands of vertices. In addition, we
propose a multi-start variant of RLS that is suitable for solving the
minimum weight dominating set problem. The application of RLS in graph
mining is also briefly demonstrated
Knuthian Drawings of Series-Parallel Flowcharts
Inspired by a classic paper by Knuth, we revisit the problem of drawing
flowcharts of loop-free algorithms, that is, degree-three series-parallel
digraphs. Our drawing algorithms show that it is possible to produce Knuthian
drawings of degree-three series-parallel digraphs with good aspect ratios and
