Dealing with uncertain entities in ontology alignment using rough sets

Many approaches to ontology alignment use multiple similarity measures to map entities between ontologies. However, it remains a key challenge in dealing with uncertain entities for which the employed ontology alignment measures produce conflicting results on similarity of the mapped entities. This paper presents OARS, a rough-set based approach to ontology alignment which achieves a high degree of accuracy in situations where uncertainty arises because of the conflicting results generated by different similarity measures. OARS employs a combinational approach and considers both lexical and structural similarity measures. OARS is extensively evaluated with the benchmark ontologies of the ontology alignment evaluation initiative (OAEI) 2010, and performs best in the aspect of recall in comparison with a number of alignment systems while generating a comparable performance in precision
Description of the Chinese-to-Spanish rule-based machine translation system developed with a hybrid combination of human annotation and statistical techniques
Two of the most popular Machine Translation (MT) paradigms are rule based (RBMT) and corpus based, which include the statistical systems (SMT). When scarce parallel corpus is available, RBMT becomes particularly attractive. This is the case of the Chinese--Spanish language pair.
This article presents the first RBMT system for Chinese to Spanish. We describe a hybrid method for constructing this system taking advantage of available resources such as parallel corpora that are used to extract dictionaries and lexical and structural transfer rules.
The final system is freely available online and open source. Although performance lags behind standard SMT systems for an in-domain test set, the results show that the RBMTâs coverage is competitive and it outperforms the SMT system in an out-of-domain test set. This RBMT system is available to the general public, it can be further enhanced, and it opens up the possibility of creating future hybrid MT systems.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Minimally supervised induction of morphology through bitexts
textA knowledge of morphology can be useful for many natural language processing systems. Thus, much effort has been expended in developing accurate computational tools for morphology that lemmatize, segment and generate new forms. The most powerful and accurate of these have been manually encoded, such endeavors being without exception expensive and time-consuming. There have been consequently many attempts to reduce this cost in the development of morphological systems through the development of unsupervised or minimally supervised algorithms and learning methods for acquisition of morphology. These efforts have yet to produce a tool that approaches the performance of manually encoded systems.
Here, I present a strategy for dealing with morphological clustering and segmentation in a minimally supervised manner but one that will be more linguistically informed than previous unsupervised approaches. That is, this study will attempt to induce clusters of words from an unannotated text that are inflectional variants of each other. Then a set of inflectional suffixes by part-of-speech will be induced from these clusters. This level of detail is made possible by a method known as alignment and transfer (AT), among other names, an approach that uses aligned bitexts to transfer linguistic resources developed for one languageâthe source languageâto another languageâthe target. This approach has a further advantage in that it allows a reduction in the amount of training data without a significant degradation in performance making it useful in applications targeted at data collected from endangered languages. In the current study, however, I use English as the source and German as the target for ease of evaluation and for certain typlogical properties of German. The two main tasks, that of clustering and segmentation, are approached as sequential tasks with the clustering informing the segmentation to allow for greater accuracy in morphological analysis.
While the performance of these methods does not exceed the current roster of unsupervised or minimally supervised approaches to morphology acquisition, it attempts to integrate more learning methods than previous studies. Furthermore, it attempts to learn inflectional morphology as opposed to derivational morphology, which is a crucial distinction in linguistics.Linguistic
Survey of the State of the Art in Natural Language Generation: Core tasks, applications and evaluation
This paper surveys the current state of the art in Natural Language
Generation (NLG), defined as the task of generating text or speech from
non-linguistic input. A survey of NLG is timely in view of the changes that the
field has undergone over the past decade or so, especially in relation to new
(usually data-driven) methods, as well as new applications of NLG technology.
This survey therefore aims to (a) give an up-to-date synthesis of research on
the core tasks in NLG and the architectures adopted in which such tasks are
organised; (b) highlight a number of relatively recent research topics that
have arisen partly as a result of growing synergies between NLG and other areas
of artificial intelligence; (c) draw attention to the challenges in NLG
evaluation, relating them to similar challenges faced in other areas of Natural
Language Processing, with an emphasis on different evaluation methods and the

Comparison of ontology alignment systems across single matching task via the McNemar's test
Ontology alignment is widely-used to find the correspondences between
different ontologies in diverse fields.After discovering the alignments,several
performance scores are available to evaluate them.The scores typically require
the identified alignment and a reference containing the underlying actual
correspondences of the given ontologies.The current trend in the alignment
evaluation is to put forward a new score(e.g., precision, weighted precision,
etc.)and to compare various alignments by juxtaposing the obtained scores.
However,it is substantially provocative to select one measure among others for
comparison.On top of that, claiming if one system has a better performance than
one another cannot be substantiated solely by comparing two scalars.In this
paper,we propose the statistical procedures which enable us to theoretically
favor one system over one another.The McNemar's test is the statistical means
by which the comparison of two ontology alignment systems over one matching
task is drawn.The test applies to a 2x2 contingency table which can be
constructed in two different ways based on the alignments,each of which has
their own merits/pitfalls.The ways of the contingency table construction and
various apposite statistics from the McNemar's test are elaborated in minute
detail.In the case of having more than two alignment systems for comparison,
the family-wise error rate is expected to happen. Thus, the ways of preventing
such an error are also discussed.A directed graph visualizes the outcome of the
McNemar's test in the presence of multiple alignment systems.From this graph,
it is readily understood if one system is better than one another or if their
differences are imperceptible.The proposed statistical methodologies are
applied to the systems participated in the OAEI 2016 anatomy track, and also
compares several well-known similarity metrics for the same matching problem
Using percolated dependencies for phrase extraction in SMT
Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) systems rely heavily on the quality of the phrase pairs induced from large amounts of training data. Apart from the widely used method of heuristic learning of n-gram phrase translations from word alignments, there are numerous methods for extracting these phrase pairs. One such class of approaches uses translation information encoded in parallel treebanks to extract phrase pairs. Work to date has demonstrated the usefulness of translation models induced from both constituency structure trees and dependency structure trees. Both syntactic annotations rely on the existence of natural language parsers for both the source and target languages. We depart from the norm by directly obtaining dependency parses from constituency structures using head percolation tables. The paper investigates the use of aligned chunks induced from percolated dependencies in FrenchâEnglish SMT and contrasts it with the aforementioned extracted phrases.
We observe that adding phrase pairs from any other method improves translation performance over the baseline n-gram-based system, percolated dependencies are a good substitute for parsed dependencies, and that supplementing with our novel head percolation-induced chunks shows a general trend toward improving all system types across two data sets up to a 5.26% relative increase in BLEU
Generating indicative-informative summaries with SumUM
We present and evaluate SumUM, a text summarization system that takes a raw technical text as input and produces an indicative informative summary. The indicative part of the summary identifies the topics of the document, and the informative part elaborates on some of these topics according to the reader's interest. SumUM motivates the topics, describes entities, and defines concepts. It is a first step for exploring the issue of dynamic summarization. This is accomplished through a process of shallow syntactic and semantic analysis, concept identification, and text regeneration. Our method was developed through the study of a corpus of abstracts written by professional abstractors. Relying on human judgment, we have evaluated indicativeness, informativeness, and text acceptability of the automatic summaries. The results thus far indicate good performance when compared with other summarization technologies
