An enhanced brain storm sine cosine algorithm for global optimization problems

    Get PDF
The conventional sine cosine algorithm (SCA) does not appropriately balance exploration and exploitation, causing premature convergence, especially for complex optimization problems, such as the complex shifted or shifted rotated problems. To address this issue, this paper proposes an enhanced brain storm SCA (EBS-SCA), where an EBS strategy is employed to improve the population diversity, and by combining it with two different update equations, two new individual update strategies [individual update strategies (IUS): IUS-I and IUS-II] are developed to make effective balance between exploration and exploitation during the entire iterative search process. Double sets of benchmark suites involving 46 popular functions and two real-world problems are employed to compare the EBS-SCA with other metaheuristic algorithms. The experimental results validate that the proposed EBS-SCA achieves the overall best performance including the global search ability, convergence speed, and scalability

    Get PDF
Currently private and government agencies use remote sensing images (RSI) for various applications from military applications to agriculture growth. The images can be multispectral, panchromatic, ultra-spectral, or hyperspectral of terra bytes. RSI classification is considered one important application for remote sensing. Climate change detection especially affects numerous aspects of day-to-day lives, for instance, forestry management, weather forecasting, transportation, agriculture, road condition monitoring, and the detection of the natural atmosphere. Conversely, certain research works had a focus on classification of actual weather phenomenon images, generally depending on visual observations from humans. The conventional artificial visual difference between weather phenomena will take more time and error-prone. This paper develops a new reinforcement learning based climate change analysis on satellite multispectral image processing (RLCCA-SMSIP) technique. In order to properly determine climate change, the RLCCA-SMSIP technique employs residual network (ResNet-101) model for feature extraction. Next, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach is utilized for climate classification. Finally, parameter selection of the RLCCA-SMSIP technique involves sine cosine algorithm (SCA) for DRL model. For assuring the enhanced outcomes of the presented RLCCA-SMSIP model, comprehensive comparison results are assessed. The obtained values denote the supremacy of the RLCCA-SMSIP model on climate classification

    Q-Learnheuristics: towards data-driven balanced metaheuristics

One of the central issues that must be resolved for a metaheuristic optimization process to work well is the dilemma of the balance between exploration and exploitation. The metaheuristics (MH) that achieved this balance can be called balanced MH, where a Q-Learning (QL) integration framework was proposed for the selection of metaheuristic operators conducive to this balance, particularly the selection of binarization schemes when a continuous metaheuristic solves binary combinatorial problems. In this work the use of this framework is extended to other recent metaheuristics, demonstrating that the integration of QL in the selection of operators improves the exploration-exploitation balance. Specifically, the Whale Optimization Algorithm and the Sine-Cosine Algorithm are tested by solving the Set Covering Problem, showing statistical improvements in this balance and in the quality of the solutions

On a novel hybrid Manta ray foraging optimizer and its application on parameters estimation of lithium-ion battery

    Get PDF
In this paper, we propose a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm called MRFO-PSO that hybridizes the Manta ray foraging optimization (MRFO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) with the aim to balance the exploration and exploitation abilities. In the MRFO-PSO, the concept of velocity of the PSO is incorporated to guide the searching process of the MRFO, where the velocity is updated by the first best and the second-best solutions. By this integration, the balancing issue between the exploration phase and exploitation ability has been further improved. To illustrate the robustness and effectiveness of the MRFO-PSO, it is tested on 23 benchmark equations and it is applied to estimate the parameters of Tremblay's model with three different commercial lithium-ion batteries including the Samsung Cylindrical ICR18650-22 lithium-ion rechargeable battery, Tenergy 30209 prismatic cell, Ultralife UBBL03 (type LI-7) rechargeable battery. The study contribution exclusively utilizes hybrid machine learning-based tuning for Tremblay's model parameters to overcome the disadvantages of human-based tuning. In addition, the comparisons of the MRFO-PSO with six recent meta-heuristic methods are performed in terms of some statistical metrics and Wilcoxon's test-based non-parametric test. As a result, the conducted performance measures have confirmed the competitive results as well as the superiority of the proposed MRFO-PSO.Web of Science151art. no. 6

A Tent L\'evy Flying Sparrow Search Algorithm for Feature Selection: A COVID-19 Case Study

The "Curse of Dimensionality" induced by the rapid development of information science, might have a negative impact when dealing with big datasets. In this paper, we propose a variant of the sparrow search algorithm (SSA), called Tent L\'evy flying sparrow search algorithm (TFSSA), and use it to select the best subset of features in the packing pattern for classification purposes. SSA is a recently proposed algorithm that has not been systematically applied to feature selection problems. After verification by the CEC2020 benchmark function, TFSSA is used to select the best feature combination to maximize classification accuracy and minimize the number of selected features. The proposed TFSSA is compared with nine algorithms in the literature. Nine evaluation metrics are used to properly evaluate and compare the performance of these algorithms on twenty-one datasets from the UCI repository. Furthermore, the approach is applied to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) dataset, yielding the best average classification accuracy and the average number of feature selections, respectively, of 93.47% and 2.1. Experimental results confirm the advantages of the proposed algorithm in improving classification accuracy and reducing the number of selected features compared to other wrapper-based algorithms

his thesis implements a novel nature-inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithm, namely the modified Multi-Verse Optimizer (mMVO) algorithm, to identify the continuous-time model of Hammerstein system. Multi-Verse Optimizer (MVO) is one of the most recent robust nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm. It has been successfully implemented and used in various areas such as machine learning applications, engineering applications, network applications, parameter control, and other similar applications to solve optimization problems. However, such metaheuristics had some limitations, such as local optima problem, low searching capability and imbalance between exploration and exploitation. By considering these limitations, two modifications were made upon the conventional MVO in our proposed mMVO algorithm. Our first modification was an average design parameter updating mechanism to solve the local optima issue of the traditional MVO. The essential feature of the average design parameter updating mechanism is that it helps any trapped design parameter jump out from the local optima region and continue a new search track. The second modification is the hybridization of MVO with the Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) to improve the low searching capability of the conventional MVO. Hybridization aims to combine MVO and SCA algorithms advantages and minimize the disadvantages, such as low searching capability and imbalance between exploration and exploitation. In particular, the search capacity of the MVO algorithm has been improved using the sine and cosine functions of the Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) that will be able to balance the processes of exploration and exploitation. The mMVO based method is then used for identifying the parameters of linear and nonlinear subsystems in the Hammerstein model using the given input and output data. Note that the structure of the linear and nonlinear subsystems is assumed to be known. Moreover, a continuous-time linear subsystem is considered in this study, while there are a few methods that utilize such models. Two numerical examples and one real-world application, such as the Twin Rotor System (TRS) are used to illustrate the efficiency of the mMVO-based method. Various nonlinear subsystems such as quadratic and hyperbolic functions (sine and tangent) are used in those experiments. Numerical and experimental results are analyzed to focus on the convergence curve of the fitness function, the parameter variation index, frequency and time domain response and the Wilcoxon rank test. For the numerical identifications, three different levels of white noise variances were taken. The statistical analysis value (mean) was taken from the parameter deviation index to see how much our proposed algorithm has improved. For Example 1, the improvements are 29%, 33.15% and 36.68%, and for the noise variances, 0.01, 0.25, and 1.0 improvements can be found. For Example 2, the improvements are 39.36%, 39.61% and 66.18%, and for noise variances, the improvements are by 0.01, 0.25 and 1.0, respectively. Finally, for the real TRS application, the improvement is 7%. The numerical and experimental results also showed that both Hammerstein model subsystems are defined effectively using the mMVO-based method, particularly in quadratic output estimation error and a differentiation parameter index. The results further confirmed that the proposed mMVObased method provided better solutions than other optimization techniques, such as PSO, GWO, ALO, MVO and SCA

Association rule mining (ARM) is one of the core techniques of data mining to discover potentially valuable association relationships from mixed datasets. In the current research, various heuristic algorithms have been introduced into ARM to address the high computation time of traditional ARM. Although a more detailed review of the heuristic algorithms based on ARM is available, this paper differs from the existing reviews in that we expected it to provide a more comprehensive and multi-faceted survey of emerging research, which could provide a reference for researchers in the field to help them understand the state-of-the-art PSO-based ARM algorithms. In this paper, we review the existing research results. Heuristic algorithms for ARM were divided into three main groups, including biologically inspired, physically inspired, and other algorithms. Additionally, different types of ARM and their evaluation metrics are described in this paper, and the current status of the improvement in PSO algorithms is discussed in stages, including swarm initialization, algorithm parameter optimization, optimal particle update, and velocity and position updates. Furthermore, we discuss the applications of PSO-based ARM algorithms and propose further research directions by exploring the existing problems.publishedVersio
