Multimedia Content Distribution in Hybrid Wireless Networks using Weighted Clustering
Fixed infrastructured networks naturally support centralized approaches for
group management and information provisioning. Contrary to infrastructured
networks, in multi-hop ad-hoc networks each node acts as a router as well as
sender and receiver. Some applications, however, requires hierarchical
arrangements that-for practical reasons-has to be done locally and
self-organized. An additional challenge is to deal with mobility that causes
permanent network partitioning and re-organizations. Technically, these
problems can be tackled by providing additional uplinks to a backbone network,
which can be used to access resources in the Internet as well as to inter-link
multiple ad-hoc network partitions, creating a hybrid wireless network. In this
paper, we present a prototypically implemented hybrid wireless network system
optimized for multimedia content distribution. To efficiently manage the ad-hoc
communicating devices a weighted clustering algorithm is introduced. The
proposed localized algorithm deals with mobility, but does not require
geographical information or distances.Comment: 2nd ACM Workshop on Wireless Multimedia Networking and Performance

ESAR: Energy Saving Ad Hoc Routing Protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
Mobile ad hoc networks support multi hop routing where the deployment of central base station is neither economic nor easy. Efficient routing of the packets is a major challenge in the ad hoc networks. There exist several proactive (like DSDV etc.) and reactive (Like AODV etc.) routing algorithms for the dynamic networks. The ESAR algorithm selects the path with minimum cost value indicating that the path has the shortest distance to the destination and has the maximum of the minimum available battery power of the node among the different paths. This selected path is chosen as the best path for packet transmission till any node in the path exhausts battery power beyond a threshold value. At this point of time, a backup path having the next lower cost is selected as an alternate path for packet transmission. The process is repeated till all the paths from the same source to destination are exhausted with their battery power. When this situation occurs, the cost of the paths is re-calculated and the process continues. The simulation result of the proposed algorithm ESAR enhances the network life time over the AODV and EEAODR algorithm
Energy efficient wireless sensor network communications based on computational intelligent data fusion for environmental monitoring
The study presents a novel computational intelligence algorithm designed to optimise energy consumption in an
environmental monitoring process: specifically, water level measurements in flooded areas. This algorithm aims to obtain a tradeoff
between accuracy and power consumption. The implementation constitutes a data aggregation and fusion in itself. A harsh
environment can make the direct measurement of flood levels a difficult task. This study proposes a flood level estimation,
inferred through the measurement of other common environmental variables. The benefit of this algorithm is tested both with
simulations and real experiments conducted in Donñana, a national park in southern Spain where flood level measurements have
traditionally been done manually.Junta de Andalucía P07-TIC-0247
Reliable machine-to-machine multicast services with multi-radio cooperative retransmissions
The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11036-015-0575-6The 3GPP is working towards the definition of service requirements and technical solutions to provide support for energy-efficient Machine Type Communications (MTC) in the forthcoming generations of cellular networks. One of the envisioned solutions consists in applying group management policies to clusters of devices in order to reduce control signaling and improve upon energy efficiency, e.g., multicast Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware updates. In this paper, a Multi-Radio Cooperative Retransmission Scheme is proposed to efficiently carry out multicast transmissions in MTC networks, reducing both control signaling and improving energy-efficiency. The proposal can be executed in networks composed by devices equipped with multiple radio interfaces which enable them to connect to both a cellular access network, e.g., LTE, and a short-range MTC area network, e.g., Low-Power Wi-Fi or ZigBee, as foreseen by the MTC architecture defined by ETSI. The main idea is to carry out retransmissions over the M2M area network upon error in the main cellular link. This yields a reduction in both the traffic load over the cellular link and the energy consumption of the devices. Computer-based simulations with ns-3 have been conducted to analyze the performance of the proposed scheme in terms of energy consumption and assess its superior performance compared to non-cooperative retransmission schemes, thus validating its suitability for energy-constrained MTC applications.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
