Channel Allocation for Smooth Video Delivery over Cognitive Radio Networks
Video applications normally demand stringent quality-of-service (QoS) for the high quality and smooth video playback at the receiver. Since the network is usually shared by multiple applications with diverse QoS requirements, QoS provisioning is an important and difficult task for the efficient and smooth video delivery. In the context of cognitive radio (CR) networks, as the secondary or unlicensed users share a pool of bandwidth that is temporarily being unused by the primary or licensed users, there is an inevitable interference between the licensed primary users and the unlicensed CR devices. As a result, efficient and smooth video delivery becomes even more challenging as the channel spectrum is not only a precious resource, but also much more dynamic and intermittently available to secondary users.
In this thesis, we focus on the provision of guaranteed QoS to video streaming subscribers in CR network. In video streaming applications, a playout buffer is typically deployed at the receiver to deal with the impact of the network dynamics. With different buffer storage, users can have different tolerance to the network dynamics. We exploit this feature for channel allocation in CR network. To this end, we model the channel availability as an on-off process which is stochastically known. Based on the bandwidth capacity and the specific buffer storage of users, we intelligently allocate the channels to maximize the overall network throughput while providing users with the smooth video playback, which is formulated as an optimization framework. Given the channel conditions and the video packet storage in the playout buffer, we propose a centralized scheme for provisioning the superior video service to users. Simulation results demonstrate that by exploiting the playout buffer of users, the proposed channel allocation scheme is robust against intense network dynamics and provides users with the elongated smooth video playback
Distributed Rate Allocation Policies for Multi-Homed Video Streaming over Heterogeneous Access Networks
We consider the problem of rate allocation among multiple simultaneous video
streams sharing multiple heterogeneous access networks. We develop and evaluate
an analytical framework for optimal rate allocation based on observed available
bit rate (ABR) and round-trip time (RTT) over each access network and video
distortion-rate (DR) characteristics. The rate allocation is formulated as a
convex optimization problem that minimizes the total expected distortion of all
video streams. We present a distributed approximation of its solution and
compare its performance against H-infinity optimal control and two heuristic
schemes based on TCP-style additive-increase-multiplicative decrease (AIMD)
principles. The various rate allocation schemes are evaluated in simulations of
multiple high-definition (HD) video streams sharing multiple access networks.
Our results demonstrate that, in comparison with heuristic AIMD-based schemes,
both media-aware allocation and H-infinity optimal control benefit from
proactive congestion avoidance and reduce the average packet loss rate from 45%
to below 2%. Improvement in average received video quality ranges between 1.5
to 10.7 dB in PSNR for various background traffic loads and video playout
deadlines. Media-aware allocation further exploits its knowledge of the video
DR characteristics to achieve a more balanced video quality among all streams.Comment: 12 pages, 22 figure
Region of interest-based adaptive multimedia streaming scheme
Adaptive multimedia streaming aims at adjusting
the transmitted content based on the available bandwidth such as losses that often severely affect the end-user perceived quality are minimized and consequently the transmission quality increases. Current solutions affect equally the whole viewing area of the multimedia frames, despite research showing that there are regions on which the viewers are more interested in than on others. This paper presents a novel region of interest-based adaptive scheme (ROIAS) for multimedia streaming that when performing transmission-related quality adjustments, selectively affects the quality of those regions of the image the viewers are the least interested in. As the quality of the regions the viewers are the most interested in will not change (or will involve little change),the proposed scheme provides higher overall end-user perceived

A grid computing system is designed for solving complicated scientific and
commercial problems effectively,whereas mobile computing is a traditional
distributed system having computing capability with mobility and adopting
wireless communications. Media and Entertainment fields can take advantage from
both paradigms by applying its usage in gaming applications and multimedia data
management. Multimedia data has to be stored and retrieved in an efficient and
effective manner to put it in use. In this paper, we proposed an application
layer protocol for delivery of multimedia data in wireless girds i.e.
multimedia grid protocol (MMGP). To make streaming efficient a new video
compression algorithm called dWave is designed and embedded in the proposed
protocol. This protocol will provide faster, reliable access and render an
imperceptible QoS in delivering multimedia in wireless grid environment and
tackles the challenging issues such as i) intermittent connectivity, ii) device

MSPlayer: Multi-Source and multi-Path LeverAged YoutubER
Online video streaming through mobile devices has become extremely popular
nowadays. YouTube, for example, reported that the percentage of its traffic
streaming to mobile devices has soared from 6% to more than 40% over the past
two years. Moreover, people are constantly seeking to stream high quality video
for better experience while often suffering from limited bandwidth. Thanks to
the rapid deployment of content delivery networks (CDNs), popular videos are
now replicated at different sites, and users can stream videos from close-by
locations with low latencies. As mobile devices nowadays are equipped with
multiple wireless interfaces (e.g., WiFi and 3G/4G), aggregating bandwidth for
high definition video streaming has become possible.
We propose a client-based video streaming solution, MSPlayer, that takes
advantage of multiple video sources as well as multiple network paths through
different interfaces. MSPlayer reduces start-up latency and provides high
quality video streaming and robust data transport in mobile scenarios. We
experimentally demonstrate our solution on a testbed and through the YouTube

Cross layer techniques for flexible transport protocol using UDP-Lite over a satellite network
Traditional real-time multimedia and streaming services have utilised UDP over RTP. Wireless transmission, by its nature, may introduce a variable, sometimes high bit error ratio. Current transport layer protocols drop all corrupted packets, in contrast, protocols such as UDP-Lite allow error-resilient applications to be supported in the networking stack. This paper presents experimental quantitative performance metrics using H.264 and UDP Lite for the next generation transport of IP multimedia, and discusses the architectural implications for enhancing performance of a wireless and/or satellite environment
Multiple-Tree Push-based Overlay Streaming
Multiple-Tree Overlay Streaming has attracted a great amount of attention
from researchers in the past years. Multiple-tree streaming is a promising
alternative to single-tree streaming in terms of node dynamics and load
balancing, among others, which in turn addresses the perceived video quality by
the streaming user on node dynamics or when heterogeneous nodes join the
network. This article presents a comprehensive survey of the different
aproaches and techniques used in this research area. In this paper we identify
node-disjointness as the property most approaches aim to achieve. We also
present an alternative technique which does not try to achieve this but does
local optimizations aiming global optimizations. Thus, we identify this
property as not being absolute necessary for creating robust and heterogeneous
multi-tree overlays. We identify two main design goals: robustness and support
for heterogeneity, and classify existing approaches into these categories as
their main focus
