Flexible Global Software Development (GSD): Antecedents of Success in Requirements Analysis
Globalization of software development has resulted in a rapid shift away from the traditional collocated, on-site development model, to the offshoring model. Emerging trends indicate an increasing interest in offshoring even in early phases like requirements analysis. Additionally, the flexibility offered by the agile development approach makes it attractive for adaptation in globally distributed software work. A question of significance then is what impacts the success of offshoring earlier phases, like requirements analysis, in a flexible and globally distributed environment? This article incorporates the stance of control theory to posit a research model that examines antecedent factors such as requirements change, facilitation by vendor and client site-coordinators, control, and computer-mediated communication. The impact of these factors on success of requirements analysis projects in a âflexibleâ global setting is tested using two quasi-experiments involving students from Management Development Institute, India and Marquette University, USA. Results indicate that formal modes of control significantly influence project success during requirements analysis. Further, facilitation by both client and vendor site coordinators positively impacts requirements analysis success

This book presents the collection of fifty papers which were presented in the Second International Conference on BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY 2011 - Management, Technology and Learning for Individuals, Organisations and Society in Turbulent Environments , held in PĂłvoa de Varzim, Portugal, from 22ndto 24thof June, 2011.The main motive of the meeting was growing awareness of the importance of the sustainability issue. This importance had emerged from the growing uncertainty of the market behaviour that leads to the characterization of the market, i.e.
environment, as turbulent. Actually, the characterization of the environment as uncertain and turbulent reflects the fact that the traditional technocratic and/or socio-technical approaches cannot effectively and efficiently lead with the present situation. In other words, the rise of the sustainability issue means the quest for new instruments to deal with uncertainty and/or turbulence.
The sustainability issue has a complex nature and solutions are sought in a wide range of domains and instruments to achieve and manage it. The domains range from environmental sustainability (referring to natural environment) through organisational and business sustainability towards social sustainability. Concerning the instruments for sustainability, they range from traditional engineering and management methodologies towards âsoftâ instruments such as knowledge, learning, and creativity. The papers in this book address virtually whole sustainability problems space in a greater or lesser extent. However, although the uncertainty and/or turbulence, or in other words the dynamic properties, come from coupling of management, technology, learning, individuals, organisations and society, meaning that everything is at the same time effect and cause, we wanted to put the emphasis on business with the intention to address primarily companies and their businesses.
Due to this reason, the main title of the book is âBusiness Sustainability 2.0â but with the approach of coupling Management, Technology and Learning for individuals, organisations and society in Turbulent Environments. Also, the notationâ2.0â is to promote the publication as a step further from our previous publication â âBusiness Sustainability Iâ â as would be for a new version of software.
Concerning the Second International Conference on BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY, its particularity was that it had served primarily as a learning environment in which the papers published in this book were the ground for further individual and collective growth in understanding and perception of sustainability and capacity for building new instruments for business sustainability.
In that respect, the methodology of the conference work was basically dialogical, meaning promoting dialog on the papers, but also including formal paper presentations. In this way, the conference presented a rich space for satisfying different authorsâ and participantsâ needs.
Additionally, promoting the widest and global learning environment and participation, in accordance with the Conference's assumed mission to promote Proactive Generative Collaborative Learning, the Conference Organisation shares/puts open to the community the papers presented in this book, as well as the papers presented on the previous Conference(s). These papers can be accessed from the conference webpage (http://labve.dps.uminho.pt/bs11).
In these terms, this book could also be understood as a complementary instrument to the Conference authorsâ and participantsâ, but also to the wider readershipsâ interested in the sustainability issues.
The book brought together 107 authors from 11 countries, namely from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Serbia, Switzerland, and United States of America. The authors ârangedâ from senior and renowned scientists to young researchers providing a rich and learning environment.
At the end, the editors hope, and would like, that this book to be useful, meeting the expectation of the authors and wider readership and serving for enhancing the individual and collective learning, and to incentive further scientific development and creation of new papers.

Survey on Additive Manufacturing, Cloud 3D Printing and Services
Cloud Manufacturing (CM) is the concept of using manufacturing resources in a
service oriented way over the Internet. Recent developments in Additive
Manufacturing (AM) are making it possible to utilise resources ad-hoc as
replacement for traditional manufacturing resources in case of spontaneous
problems in the established manufacturing processes. In order to be of use in
these scenarios the AM resources must adhere to a strict principle of
transparency and service composition in adherence to the Cloud Computing (CC)
paradigm. With this review we provide an overview over CM, AM and relevant
domains as well as present the historical development of scientific research in
these fields, starting from 2002. Part of this work is also a meta-review on
the domain to further detail its development and structure

Implementation of virtual manufacturing by a technology licensing company
NoThe paper considers the implementation of a virtual manufacturing system as an alternative to outward technology licensing in a high technology industrial sector. Brief theoretical definition and description of the two strategy options is provided to give background and context. This is followed by empirical material from a longitudinal case study of a company that has developed a virtual manufacturing system in addition to its pre-existing outward technology licensing business stream. A summary account of the company history and development is followed by description of the virtual manufacturing proposal. Analysis of this identified a number of competencies that would be required in order to succeed. The final part of the paper describes the company's response to this analysis and discusses early implementation of the virtual system. It is shown that implementation of the proposal has represented a positive response to the business challenges facing the company
Business strategy driven IT systems for engineer-to-order and make-to-order manufacturing enterprises
This thesis reports research into the specification and implementation of an Information
Technology (IT) Route Map. The purpose of the Route Map is to enable rapid design
and deployment of IT solutions capable of semi-automating business processes in a
manufacturing enterprise. The Map helps structure transition processes involved in
âidentification of key business strategies and design of business processesâ and âchoice
of enterprise systems and supporting implementation techniquesâ. Common limitations
of current Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are observed and incorporated
as Route Map implications and constraints.
Scope of investigation is targeted at Small to Medium Sized Enterprises
(SMEs) that employ Engineer-To-Order (ETO) and Make-To-Order (MTO) business
processes. However, a feature of the Route Map is that it takes into account
contemporary business concerns related to âglobalisationâ, âmergers and acquisitionsâ
and âtypical resource constraint problems of SMEsâ.
In the course of the research a âBusiness Strategy Driven IT System Conceptâ
was conceived and examined. The main purpose of this concept is to promote the
development of agile and innovative business activity in SMEs. The Road Map
encourages strategy driven solutions to be (a) specified based on the use of emerging
enterprise engineering theories and (b) implemented and changed using componentbased
systems design and composition techniques.
Part-evaluation of the applicability and capabilities of the Road Map has been
carried out by conducting industrial survey and case study work. This assesses
requirements of real industrial problems and solutions. The evaluation work has also
been enabled by conducting a pilot implementation of the thesis concepts at the

Continuous maintenance and the future â Foundations and technological challenges
High value and long life products require continuous maintenance throughout their life cycle to achieve required performance with optimum through-life cost. This paper presents foundations and technologies required to offer the maintenance service. Component and system level degradation science, assessment and modelling along with life cycle âbig dataâ analytics are the two most important knowledge and skill base required for the continuous maintenance. Advanced computing and visualisation technologies will improve efficiency of the maintenance and reduce through-life cost of the product. An overview of decision table literature 1982-1995.
This report gives an overview of the literature on decision tables over the past 15 years. As much as possible, for each reference, an author supplied abstract, a number of keywords and a classification are provided. In some cases own comments are added. The purpose of these comments is to show where, how and why decision tables are used. The literature is classified according to application area, theoretical versus practical character, year of publication, country or origin (not necessarily country of publication) and the language of the document. After a description of the scope of the interview, classification results and the classification by topic are presented. The main body of the paper is the ordered list of publications with abstract, classification and comments.
