    Spanning trees short or small

    We study the problem of finding small trees. Classical network design problems are considered with the additional constraint that only a specified number kk of nodes are required to be connected in the solution. A prototypical example is the kkMST problem in which we require a tree of minimum weight spanning at least kk nodes in an edge-weighted graph. We show that the kkMST problem is NP-hard even for points in the Euclidean plane. We provide approximation algorithms with performance ratio 2k2\sqrt{k} for the general edge-weighted case and O(k1/4)O(k^{1/4}) for the case of points in the plane. Polynomial-time exact solutions are also presented for the class of decomposable graphs which includes trees, series-parallel graphs, and bounded bandwidth graphs, and for points on the boundary of a convex region in the Euclidean plane. We also investigate the problem of finding short trees, and more generally, that of finding networks with minimum diameter. A simple technique is used to provide a polynomial-time solution for finding kk-trees of minimum diameter.     Approximation Algorithms for Generalized MST and TSP in Grid Clusters

    We consider a special case of the generalized minimum spanning tree problem (GMST) and the generalized travelling salesman problem (GTSP) where we are given a set of points inside the integer grid (in Euclidean plane) where each grid cell is 1×11 \times 1. In the MST version of the problem, the goal is to find a minimum tree that contains exactly one point from each non-empty grid cell (cluster). Similarly, in the TSP version of the problem, the goal is to find a minimum weight cycle containing one point from each non-empty grid cell. We give a (1+42+ϵ)(1+4\sqrt{2}+\epsilon) and (1.5+82+ϵ)(1.5+8\sqrt{2}+\epsilon)-approximation algorithm for these two problems in the described setting, respectively. Our motivation is based on the problem posed in [7] for a constant approximation algorithm. The authors designed a PTAS for the more special case of the GMST where non-empty cells are connected end dense enough. However, their algorithm heavily relies on this connectivity restriction and is unpractical. Our results develop the topic further

    The Homogeneous Broadcast Problem in Narrow and Wide Strips

Each node pp can transmit information to all other nodes within unit distance, provided pp is activated. The (homogeneous) broadcast problem is to activate a minimum number of nodes such that in the resulting directed communication graph, the source ss can reach any other node. We study the complexity of the regular and the hop-bounded version of the problem (in the latter, ss must be able to reach every node within a specified number of hops), with the restriction that all points lie inside a strip of width ww.     Analysis and optimization of highly reliable systems

    In the field of network design, the survivability property enables the network to maintain a certain level of network connectivity and quality of service under failure conditions. In this thesis, survivability aspects of communication systems are studied. Aspects of reliability and vulnerability of network design are also addressed. The contributions are three-fold. First, a Hop Constrained node Survivable Network Design Problem (HCSNDP) with optional (Steiner) nodes is modelled. This kind of problems are N P-Hard. An exact integer linear model is built, focused on networks represented by graphs without rooted demands, considering costs in arcs and in Steiner nodes. In addition to the exact model, the calculation of lower and upper bounds to the optimal solution is included. Models were tested over several graphs and instances, in order to validate it in cases with known solution. An Approximation Algorithm is also developed in order to address a particular case of SNDP: the Two Node Survivable Star Problem (2NCSP) with optional nodes. This problem belongs to the class of N P-Hard computational problems too. Second, the research is focused on cascading failures and target/random attacks. The Graph Fragmentation Problem (GFP) is the result of a worst case analysis of a random attack. A fixed number of individuals for protection can be chosen, and a non-protected target node immediately destroys all reachable nodes. The goal is to minimize the expected number of destroyed nodes in the network. This problem belongs to the N P-Hard class. A mathematical programming formulation is introduced and exact resolution for small instances as well as lower and upper bounds to the optimal solution. In addition to exact methods, we address the GFP by several approaches: metaheuristics, approximation algorithms, polytime methods for specific instances and exact methods in exponential time. Finally, the concept of separability in stochastic binary systems is here introduced. Stochastic Binary Systems (SBS) represent a mathematical model of a multi-component on-off system subject to independent failures. The reliability evaluation of an SBS belongs to the N P-Hard class. Therefore, we fully characterize separable systems using Han-Banach separation theorem for convex sets. Using this new concept of separable systems and Markov inequality, reliability bounds are provided for arbitrary SBS

    Approximating the Minimum Equivalent Digraph

    The MEG (minimum equivalent graph) problem is, given a directed graph, to find a small subset of the edges that maintains all reachability relations between nodes. The problem is NP-hard. This paper gives an approximation algorithm with performance guarantee of pi^2/6 ~ 1.64. The algorithm and its analysis are based on the simple idea of contracting long cycles. (This result is strengthened slightly in ``On strongly connected digraphs with bounded cycle length'' (1996).)     Scalable Parameterised Algorithms for two Steiner Problems

    In the Steiner Problem, we are given as input (i) a connected graph with nonnegative integer weights associated with the edges; and (ii) a subset of vertices called terminals. The task is to find a minimum-weight subgraph connecting all the terminals. In the Group Steiner Problem, we are given as input (i) a connected graph with nonnegative integer weights associated with the edges; and (ii) a collection of subsets of vertices called groups. The task is to find a minimum-weight subgraph that contains at least one vertex from each group. Even though the Steiner Problem and the Group Steiner Problem are NP-complete, they are known to admit parameterised algorithms that run in linear time in the size of the input graph and the exponential part can be restricted to the number of terminals and the number of groups, respectively. In this thesis, we discuss two parameterised algorithms for solving the Steiner Problem, and by reduction, the Group Steiner Problem: (a) a dynamic programming algorithm presented by Dreyfus and Wagner in 1971; and (b) an improvement of the Dreyfus-Wagner algorithm presented by Erickson, Monma and Veinott in 1987 that runs in linear time in the size of the input graph. We develop a parallel implementation of the Erickson-Monma-Veinott algorithm, and carry out extensive experiments to study the scalability of our implementation with respect to its runtime, memory bandwidth, and memory usage. Our experimental results demonstrate that the implementation can scale up to a billion edges on a single modern compute node provided that the number of terminals is small. For example, using our parallel implementation a Steiner tree for a graph with hundred million edges and ten terminals can be found in approximately twenty minutes. For an input graph with one hundred million edges and ten terminals, our parallel implementation is at least fifteen times faster than its serial counterpart on a Haswell compute node with two processors and twelve cores in each processor.     Shortest Paths and Steiner Trees in VLSI Routing

    Routing is one of the major steps in very-large-scale integration (VLSI) design. Its task is to find disjoint wire connections between sets of points on a chip, subject to numerous constraints. This problem is solved in a two-stage approach, which consists of so-called global and detailed routing steps. For each set of metal components to be connected, global routing reduces the search space by computing corridors in which detailed routing sequentially determines the desired connections as shortest paths. In this thesis, we present new theoretical results on Steiner trees and shortest paths, the two main mathematical concepts in routing. In the practical part, we give computational results of BonnRoute, a VLSI routing tool developed at the Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics at the University of Bonn. Interconnect signal delays are becoming increasingly important in modern chip designs. Therefore, the length of paths or direct delay measures should be taken into account when constructing rectilinear Steiner trees. We consider the problem of finding a rectilinear Steiner minimum tree (RSMT) that --- as a secondary objective --- minimizes a signal delay related objective. Given a source we derive some structural properties of RSMTs for which the weighted sum of path lengths from the source to the other terminals is minimized. Also, we present an exact algorithm for constructing RSMTs with weighted sum of path lengths as secondary objective, and a heuristic for various secondary objectives. Computational results for industrial designs are presented. We further consider the problem of finding a shortest rectilinear Steiner tree in the plane in the presence of rectilinear obstacles. The Steiner tree is allowed to run over obstacles; however, if it intersects an obstacle, then no connected component of the induced subtree must be longer than a given fixed length. This kind of length restriction is motivated by its application in VLSI routing where a large Steiner tree requires the insertion of repeaters which must not be placed on top of obstacles. We show that there are optimal length-restricted Steiner trees with a special structure. In particular, we prove that a certain graph (called augmented Hanan grid) always contains an optimal solution. Based on this structural result, we give an approximation scheme for the special case that all obstacles are of rectangular shape or are represented by at most a constant number of edges. Turning to the shortest paths problem, we present a new generic framework for Dijkstra's algorithm for finding shortest paths in digraphs with non-negative integral edge lengths. Instead of labeling individual vertices, we label subgraphs which partition the given graph. Much better running times can be achieved if the number of involved subgraphs is small compared to the order of the original graph and the shortest path problems restricted to these subgraphs is computationally easy. As an application we consider the VLSI routing problem, where we need to find millions of shortest paths in partial grid graphs with billions of vertices. Here, the algorithm can be applied twice, once in a coarse abstraction (where the labeled subgraphs are rectangles), and once in a detailed model (where the labeled subgraphs are intervals). Using the result of the first algorithm to speed up the second one via goal-oriented techniques leads to considerably reduced running time. We illustrate this with the routing program BonnRoute on leading-edge industrial chips. Finally, we present computational results of BonnRoute obtained on real-world VLSI chips. BonnRoute fulfills all requirements of modern VLSI routing and has been used by IBM and its customers over many years to produce more than one thousand different chips. To demonstrate the strength of BonnRoute as a state-of-the-art industrial routing tool, we show that it performs excellently on all traditional quality measures such as wire length and number of vias, but also on further criteria of equal importance in the every-day work of the designer

    Design, Analysis and Computation in Wireless and Optical Networks

    abstract: In the realm of network science, many topics can be abstracted as graph problems, such as routing, connectivity enhancement, resource/frequency allocation and so on. Though most of them are NP-hard to solve, heuristics as well as approximation algorithms are proposed to achieve reasonably good results. Accordingly, this dissertation studies graph related problems encountered in real applications. Two problems studied in this dissertation are derived from wireless network, two more problems studied are under scenarios of FIWI and optical network, one more problem is in Radio- Frequency Identification (RFID) domain and the last problem is inspired by satellite deployment. The objective of most of relay nodes placement problems, is to place the fewest number of relay nodes in the deployment area so that the network, formed by the sensors and the relay nodes, is connected. Under the fixed budget scenario, the expense involved in procuring the minimum number of relay nodes to make the network connected, may exceed the budget. In this dissertation, we study a family of problems whose goal is to design a network with “maximal connectedness” or “minimal disconnectedness”, subject to a fixed budget constraint. Apart from “connectivity”, we also study relay node problem in which degree constraint is considered. The balance of reducing the degree of the network while maximizing communication forms the basis of our d-degree minimum arrangement(d-MA) problem. In this dissertation, we look at several approaches to solving the generalized d-MA problem where we embed a graph onto a subgraph of a given degree. In recent years, considerable research has been conducted on optical and FIWI networks. Utilizing a recently proposed concept “candidate trees” in optical network, this dissertation studies counting problem on complete graphs. Closed form expressions are given for certain cases and a polynomial counting algorithm for general cases is also presented. Routing plays a major role in FiWi networks. Accordingly to a novel path length metric which emphasizes on “heaviest edge”, this dissertation proposes a polynomial algorithm on single path computation. NP-completeness proof as well as approximation algorithm are presented for multi-path routing. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology is extensively used at present for identification and tracking of a multitude of objects. In many configurations, simultaneous activation of two readers may cause a “reader collision” when tags are present in the intersection of the sensing ranges of both readers. This dissertation ad- dresses slotted time access for Readers and tries to provide a collision-free scheduling scheme while minimizing total reading time. Finally, this dissertation studies a monitoring problem on the surface of the earth for significant environmental, social/political and extreme events using satellites as sensors. It is assumed that the impact of a significant event spills into neighboring regions and there will be corresponding indicators. Careful deployment of sensors, utilizing “Identifying Codes”, can ensure that even though the number of deployed sensors is fewer than the number of regions, it may be possible to uniquely identify the region where the event has taken place.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Computer Science 201
