    A genetic programming hyper-heuristic for the multidimensional knapsack problem

    Purpose: Hyper-heuristics are a class of high-level search techniques which operate on a search space of heuristics rather than directly on a search space of solutions. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the suitability of using genetic programming as a hyper-heuristic methodology to generate constructive heuristics to solve the multidimensional 0-1 knapsack problem. Design/methodology/approach: Early hyper-heuristics focused on selecting and applying a low-level heuristic at each stage of a search. Recent trends in hyper-heuristic research have led to a number of approaches being developed to automatically generate new heuristics from a set of heuristic components. A population of heuristics to rank knapsack items are trained on a subset of test problems and then applied to unseen instances. Findings: The results over a set of standard benchmarks show that genetic programming can be used to generate constructive heuristics which yield human-competitive results. Originality/value: In this work the authors show that genetic programming is suitable as a method to generate reusable constructive heuristics for the multidimensional 0-1 knapsack problem. This is classified as a hyper-heuristic approach as it operates on a search space of heuristics rather than a search space of solutions. To our knowledge, this is the first time in the literature a GP hyper-heuristic has been used to solve the multidimensional 0-1 knapsack problem. The results suggest that using GP to evolve ranking mechanisms merits further future research effort. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited

    A Binary differential search algorithm for the 0-1 multidimensional knapsack problem

    The multidimensional knapsack problem (MKP) is known to be NP-hard in operations research and it has a wide range of applications in engineering and management. In this study, we propose a binary differential search method to solve 0-1 MKPs where the stochastic search is guided by a Brownian motion-like random walk. Our proposed method comprises two main operations: discrete solution generation and feasible solution production. Discrete solutions are generated by integrating Brownian motion-like random search with an integer-rounding operation. However, the rounded discrete variables may violate the constraints. Thus, a feasible solution production strategy is used to maintain the feasibility of the rounded discrete variables. To demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed algorithm, we solved various 0-1 MKPs using our proposed algorithm as well as some existing meta-heuristic methods. The numerical results obtained demonstrated that our algorithm performs better than existing meta-heuristic methods. Furthermore, our algorithm has the capacity to solve large-scale 0-1 MKPs

    A multi-level search strategy for the 0–1 Multidimensional Knapsack Problem

    AbstractWe propose an exact method based on a multi-level search strategy for solving the 0–1 Multidimensional Knapsack Problem. Our search strategy is primarily based on the reduced costs of the non-basic variables of the LP-relaxation solution. Considering that the variables are sorted in decreasing order of their absolute reduced cost value, the top level branches of the search tree are enumerated following Resolution Search strategy, the middle level branches are enumerated following Branch & Bound strategy and the lower level branches are enumerated according to a simple Depth First Search enumeration strategy. Experimentally, this cooperative scheme is able to solve optimally large-scale strongly correlated 0–1 Multidimensional Knapsack Problem instances. The optimal values of all the 10 constraint, 500 variable instances and some of the 30 constraint, 250 variable instances of the OR-Library were found. These values were previously unknown

    Improvement of the branch and bound algorithm for solving the knapsack linear integer problem

    The paper presents a new reformulation approach to reduce the complexity of a branch and bound algorithm for solving the knapsack linear integer problem. The branch and bound algorithm in general relies on the usual strategy of first relaxing the integer problem into a linear programing (LP) model. If the linear programming optimal solution is integer then, the optimal solution to the integer problem is available. If the linear programming optimal solution is not integer, then a variable with a fractional value is selected to create two sub-problems such that part of the feasible region is discarded without eliminating any of the feasible integer solutions. The process is repeated on all variables with fractional values until an integer solution is found. In this approach variable sum and additional constraints are generated and added to the original problem before solving. In order to do this the objective bound of knapsack problem is quickly determined. The bound is then used to generate a set of variable sum limits and four additional constraints. From the variable sum limits, initial sub-problems are constructed and solved. The optimal solution is then obtained as the best solution from all the sub-problems in terms of the objective value. The proposed procedure results in sub-problems that have reduced complexity and easier to solve than the original problem in terms of numbers of branch and bound iterations or sub-problems.The knapsack problem is a special form of the general linear integer problem. There are so many types of knapsack problems. These include the zero-one, multiple, multiple-choice, bounded, unbounded, quadratic, multi-objective, multi-dimensional, collapsing zero-one and set union knapsack problems. The zero-one knapsack problem is one in which the variables assume 0 s and 1 s only. The reason is that an item can be chosen or not chosen. In other words there is no way it is possible to have fractional amounts or items. This is the easiest class of the knapsack problems and is the only one that can be solved in polynomial by interior point algorithms and in pseudo-polynomial time by dynamic programming approaches. The multiple-choice knapsack problem is a generalization of the ordinary knapsack problem, where the set of items is partitioned into classes. The zero-one choice of taking an item is replaced by the selection of exactly one item out of each class of item

    A cooperative local search-based algorithm for the Multiple-Scenario Max-Min Knapsack Problem

    8International audienceThe purpose of this article is to present a novel method to approximately solve the Multiple-Scenario Max-Min Knapsack Problem (MSM2KP). This problem models many real world situations, e.g. when for many scenarios noted π∈P={1,…,P}\pi \in \mathcal P=\{1,\ldots,P\}, the aim is to identify the one offering a better alternative in term of maximizing the worst possible outcome. Herein is presented a cooperative approach based on two local search algorithms: (i) a limited-area local search applied in the elite neighborhood and which accepts the first solution with some deterioration threshold of the current solution, (ii) a wide range local search is applied to perform a sequence of paths exchange to improve the current solution. Results have been analyzed by means state-of-the art methods and via problem instances obtained by a generator code taken from the literature. The tests were executed in compeltely comparable scenarios to those of the literature. The results are promising and the efficiency of the proposed approach is also shown
