During the last two decades, integrated production-distribution problems have attracted a great deal of attention in the operations research literature. Within a short period, a large number of papers have been published and the field has expanded dramatically. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the existing literature by classifying the existing models into several different categories based on multiple characteristics. The paper also discusses some trends and list promising avenues for future research

Optimization strategies for the integrated management of perishable supply chains: A literature review

    Get PDF
Purpose: The main purpose of this article is to systematically review the papers published in the period 2005-2020 about the integration of production, inventory and distribution activities in perishable supply chains. Design/methodology/approach: The proposed research methodology is based on several steps. First, database and keywords are selected, with the aim to search and collect the main papers, dealing with the integration of production, inventory, distribution activities in perishable supply chains. Then, a bibliometric analysis is carried out, to detect: the main publishing sources, the chronological distribution, the most used keywords, the featured authors, about the selected papers. A five-dimension classification framework is proposed to carry out a content analysis, where the papers of the literature review are classified and discussed, according to: supply chain structure, objective, perishability type, solution approach, approach validation. Findings: Interest in the application of optimization models for integrated decision-making along perishable supply chains is strongly growing. Integrating multiple stages of the supply chain into a single framework is complex, especially when referring to perishable products. The vast majority of the problems addressed are then NP-Hard. Only a limited quantity of the selected papers aims to solve real-life case studies. There is a need for further research, which is capable of modeling and quantitatively improving existing supply chains. The potentials of Industry 4.0 are currently little explored. Originality/value: Based on the analysis of the papers published, this article outlines the current state of the art on the optimization strategies for the integrated management of perishable supply chains, which are very complex to be managed. Research trends and gaps are discussed, future challenges are presentedPeer Reviewe

Integrated Supply Chain Network Design: Location, Transportation, Routing and Inventory Decisions

abstract: In this dissertation, an innovative framework for designing a multi-product integrated supply chain network is proposed. Multiple products are shipped from production facilities to retailers through a network of Distribution Centers (DCs). Each retailer has an independent, random demand for multiple products. The particular problem considered in this study also involves mixed-product transshipments between DCs with multiple truck size selection and routing delivery to retailers. Optimally solving such an integrated problem is in general not easy due to its combinatorial nature, especially when transshipments and routing are involved. In order to find out a good solution effectively, a two-phase solution methodology is derived: Phase I solves an integer programming model which includes all the constraints in the original model except that the routings are simplified to direct shipments by using estimated routing cost parameters. Then Phase II model solves the lower level inventory routing problem for each opened DC and its assigned retailers. The accuracy of the estimated routing cost and the effectiveness of the two-phase solution methodology are evaluated, the computational performance is found to be promising. The problem is able to be heuristically solved within a reasonable time frame for a broad range of problem sizes (one hour for the instance of 200 retailers). In addition, a model is generated for a similar network design problem considering direct shipment and consolidation within the same product set opportunities. A genetic algorithm and a specific problem heuristic are designed, tested and compared on several realistic scenarios.Dissertation/ThesisPh.D. Industrial Engineering 201

A concise guide to existing and emerging vehicle routing problem variants

Vehicle routing problems have been the focus of extensive research over the past sixty years, driven by their economic importance and their theoretical interest. The diversity of applications has motivated the study of a myriad of problem variants with different attributes. In this article, we provide a concise overview of existing and emerging problem variants. Models are typically refined along three lines: considering more relevant objectives and performance metrics, integrating vehicle routing evaluations with other tactical decisions, and capturing fine-grained yet essential aspects of modern supply chains. We organize the main problem attributes within this structured framework. We discuss recent research directions and pinpoint current shortcomings, recent successes, and emerging challenges

Fleet readiness : stocking spare parts and high-tech assets

We consider a maintenance shop that is responsible for the availability of a eet of assets, e.g., trains. Unavailability of assets may be due to active maintenance time or unavailability of spare parts. Both spare assets and spare components may be stocked in order to ensure a certain percentage of eet readiness (e.g., 95%), i.e., having sucient assets available for the primary process (e.g., running a train schedule). This is dierent from guaranteeing a certain average availability, as is typically done in the literature on spare parts inventories. We analyse the corresponding system, assuming continuous review and base stock control. We propose an algorithm, based on a marginal analysis approach, to solve the optimization problem of minimizing holding costs for spare assets and spare parts. Since the problem is not item separable, even marginal analysis is time consuming, but we show how to eciently solve this. Using a numerical experiment, we show that our algorithm generally leads to a solution that is close to optimal, and we show that our algorithm is much faster than an existing algorithm for a closely related problem

Dynamic shortest path problem with travel-time-dependent stochastic disruptions : hybrid approximate dynamic programming algorithms with a clustering approach

    Get PDF
We consider a dynamic shortest path problem with stochastic disruptions in the network. We use both historical information and real-time information of the network for the dynamic routing decisions. We model the problem as a discrete time nite horizon Markov Decision Process (MDP). For networks with many levels of disruptions, the MDP faces the curses of dimensionality. We rst apply Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) algorithm with a standard value function approximation. Then, we improve the ADP algorithm by exploiting the structure of the disruption transition functions. We develop a hybrid ADP with a clustering approach using both a deterministic lookahead policy and a value function approximation. We develop a test bed of networks to evaluate the quality of the solutions. The hybrid ADP algorithm with clustering approach signicantly reduces the computational time, while stil providing good quality solutions.
