    Adaptive filtration of the UAV movement parameters based on the AOA-measurement sensor networks

    Currently, the urgent task is to assess the small-sized maneuvering UAVs movement parameters. The location of an unknown UAV as a radio source can be determined using AoA measurements of the wireless sensor network. To describe the movement of a maneuvering UAV, a model is used in the form of a dynamic system with switching in discrete time. The values of switching variable determine type of UAV movement. To synthesize trajectory filtering algorithms, the Markov property of the extended process is used, which includes a vector of UAV movement parameters and a switching variable. The optimal trajectory filtering algorithm describes a recurrent procedure for calculating the a posteriori probability density function of an extended process. The optimal filtering device is multi-channel with feedback between the channels. To synthesize a quasi-optimal algorithm, linearized equations of UAV coordinates measurement in a Cartesian coordinate system based on AoA-measurements of a sensor network were obtained and an measurement errors analysis was performed. The quasi-optimal algorithm is obtained using the Gaussian approximation method of conditional a posteriori probability density functions and implements sequential processing of incoming measurements. It provides a joint solution to the problems of estimating UAV coordinates and recognizing of its movement type. Analysis of developed algorithm efficiency was carried out by Monte Carlo method. Shows the dependences of movement types recognition probabilities. A comparative analysis is performed with the Kalman filtering algorithm

    Affine multi-view modelling for close range object measurement

    In photogrammetry, sensor modelling with 3D point estimation is a fundamental topic of research. Perspective frame cameras offer the mathematical basis for close range modelling approaches. The norm is to employ robust bundle adjustments for simultaneous parameter estimation and 3D object measurement. In 2D to 3D modelling strategies image resolution, scale, sampling and geometric distortion are prior factors. Non-conventional image geometries that implement uncalibrated cameras are established in computer vision approaches; these aim for fast solutions at the expense of precision. The projective camera is defined in homogeneous terms and linear algorithms are employed. An attractive sensor model disembodied from projective distortions is the affine. Affine modelling has been studied in the contexts of geometry recovery, feature detection and texturing in vision, however multi-view approaches for precise object measurement are not yet widely available. This project investigates affine multi-view modelling from a photogrammetric standpoint. A new affine bundle adjustment system has been developed for point-based data observed in close range image networks. The system allows calibration, orientation and 3D point estimation. It is processed as a least squares solution with high redundancy providing statistical analysis. Starting values are recovered from a combination of implicit perspective and explicit affine approaches. System development focuses on retrieval of orientation parameters, 3D point coordinates and internal calibration with definition of system datum, sensor scale and radial lens distortion. Algorithm development is supported with method description by simulation. Initialization and implementation are evaluated with the statistical indicators, algorithm convergence and correlation of parameters. Object space is assessed with evaluation of the 3D point correlation coefficients and error ellipsoids. Sensor scale is checked with comparison of camera systems utilizing quality and accuracy metrics. For independent method evaluation, testing is implemented over a perspective bundle adjustment tool with similar indicators. Test datasets are initialized from precise reference image networks. Real affine image networks are acquired with an optical system (~1M pixel CCD cameras with 0.16x telecentric lens). Analysis of tests ascertains that the affine method results in an RMS image misclosure at a sub-pixel level and precisions of a few tenths of microns in object space

    Vision-Based Control of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Automated Structural Monitoring and Geo-Structural Analysis of Civil Infrastructure Systems

    The emergence of wireless sensors capable of sensing, embedded computing, and wireless communication has provided an affordable means of monitoring large-scale civil infrastructure systems with ease. To date, the majority of the existing monitoring systems, including those based on wireless sensors, are stationary with measurement nodes installed without an intention for relocation later. Many monitoring applications involving structural and geotechnical systems require a high density of sensors to provide sufficient spatial resolution to their assessment of system performance. While wireless sensors have made high density monitoring systems possible, an alternative approach would be to empower the mobility of the sensors themselves to transform wireless sensor networks (WSNs) into mobile sensor networks (MSNs). In doing so, many benefits would be derived including reducing the total number of sensors needed while introducing the ability to learn from the data obtained to improve the location of sensors installed. One approach to achieving MSNs is to integrate the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into the monitoring application. UAV-based MSNs have the potential to transform current monitoring practices by improving the speed and quality of data collected while reducing overall system costs. The efforts of this study have been chiefly focused upon using autonomous UAVs to deploy, operate, and reconfigure MSNs in a fully autonomous manner for field monitoring of civil infrastructure systems. This study aims to overcome two main challenges pertaining to UAV-enabled wireless monitoring: the need for high-precision localization methods for outdoor UAV navigation and facilitating modes of direct interaction between UAVs and their built or natural environments. A vision-aided UAV positioning algorithm is first introduced to augment traditional inertial sensing techniques to enhance the ability of UAVs to accurately localize themselves in a civil infrastructure system for placement of wireless sensors. Multi-resolution fiducial markers indicating sensor placement locations are applied to the surface of a structure, serving as navigation guides and precision landing targets for a UAV carrying a wireless sensor. Visual-inertial fusion is implemented via a discrete-time Kalman filter to further increase the robustness of the relative position estimation algorithm resulting in localization accuracies of 10 cm or smaller. The precision landing of UAVs that allows the MSN topology change is validated on a simple beam with the UAV-based MSN collecting ambient response data for extraction of global mode shapes of the structure. The work also explores the integration of a magnetic gripper with a UAV to drop defined weights from an elevation to provide a high energy seismic source for MSNs engaged in seismic monitoring applications. Leveraging tailored visual detection and precise position control techniques for UAVs, the work illustrates the ability of UAVs to—in a repeated and autonomous fashion—deploy wireless geophones and to introduce an impulsive seismic source for in situ shear wave velocity profiling using the spectral analysis of surface waves (SASW) method. The dispersion curve of the shear wave profile of the geotechnical system is shown nearly equal between the autonomous UAV-based MSN architecture and that taken by a traditional wired and manually operated SASW data collection system.     An Efficient Estimator for Target Localization in a Multistation Redundancy System without Matrix Inversion

    This paper focuses on target localization problem in a multistation redundancy system which finds broad applications in sonar, radar, and location-based service. Previous solutions can only be applied to the minimum system, such as the TOA method with three sensors and the AOA method with two sensors or need matrix inversion. To solve this problem, we propose a simple closed-form solution for a multistation redundancy localization system by using the estimation variance as the weighting coefficient to compute an average of each group’s localization result. The proposed method, with simple algebraic solution, requires no matrix inversion and can be used for low-cost hardware devices. We derive the method in TOA solution and AOA solution, respectively. The proposed method can also be extended to other locating technologies. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed method in root-mean-square error. The positioning accuracy of the proposed method is close to Cramér-Rao low bound both in TOA solution and AOA solution

    Groundborne vibrations caused by railway construction and operation in buildings : design, implementation and analysis of measurement for assessment of human exposure

    Environmental issues surrounding railway operation and construction have become more prominent in recent years, increasing the need for administrators and researchers to understand how residents living around railways respond to the noise and vibration generated by them.Within this context, the University of Salford, within the project funded by Defra “Human response to vibration in residential environments” (NANR209), has derived exposure response relationships for railway traffic and construction for a population sample of 1281 people: 931 for railway traffic and 350 for railway construction. Vibration measurements within residences have been used for assessing human exposure to vibration alongside a social study questionnaire based on face-to-face interviews for quantifying the human response. The first part of this work is concerned with the exposure side of NANR209. The design and implementation of measurement methodologies are presented and discussed, which provide exposure data suitable for building an exposure response relationship for vibration caused by the sources mentioned above. In light of the large amount of vibration data gathered during the project, the analysis of vibration signals is considered in the second part of the dissertation. Two aspects connected with the assessment of the human exposure to vibration are investigated: wave field assessment and ground to building transmissibility analysis

    Geomorphometry 2020. Conference Proceedings

    Geomorphometry is the science of quantitative land surface analysis. It gathers various mathematical, statistical and image processing techniques to quantify morphological, hydrological, ecological and other aspects of a land surface. Common synonyms for geomorphometry are geomorphological analysis, terrain morphometry or terrain analysis and land surface analysis. The typical input to geomorphometric analysis is a square-grid representation of the land surface: a digital elevation (or land surface) model. The first Geomorphometry conference dates back to 2009 and it took place in Zürich, Switzerland. Subsequent events were in Redlands (California), Nánjīng (China), Poznan (Poland) and Boulder (Colorado), at about two years intervals. The International Society for Geomorphometry (ISG) and the Organizing Committee scheduled the sixth Geomorphometry conference in Perugia, Italy, June 2020. Worldwide safety measures dictated the event could not be held in presence, and we excluded the possibility to hold the conference remotely. Thus, we postponed the event by one year - it will be organized in June 2021, in Perugia, hosted by the Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection of the Italian National Research Council (CNR IRPI) and the Department of Physics and Geology of the University of Perugia. One of the reasons why we postponed the conference, instead of canceling, was the encouraging number of submitted abstracts. Abstracts are actually short papers consisting of four pages, including figures and references, and they were peer-reviewed by the Scientific Committee of the conference. This book is a collection of the contributions revised by the authors after peer review. We grouped them in seven classes, as follows: • Data and methods (13 abstracts) • Geoheritage (6 abstracts) • Glacial processes (4 abstracts) • LIDAR and high resolution data (8 abstracts) • Morphotectonics (8 abstracts) • Natural hazards (12 abstracts) • Soil erosion and fluvial processes (16 abstracts) The 67 abstracts represent 80% of the initial contributions. The remaining ones were either not accepted after peer review or withdrawn by their Authors. Most of the contributions contain original material, and an extended version of a subset of them will be included in a special issue of a regular journal publication
